So folks, last night we did our first acoustic gig, abit surreal and yet alot of fun it was to be doing it too!
After rushing around in the irrepressibly friendly handshake of the Mancunian rain, the team gathered itself, it's instruments and a Cellist and headed to Starbucks in Fallowfield. Not the most obvious place for a gig you may say but it turned out to be a great night!
The acoustic versions of the songs had received a great deal of attention - they'd mainly been arranged on the fly, not always with everyone in the room and under the influence of more than a few drinks - so moments before playing each one brains and hazy memories were racked to remember exactly how we'd decided to play them.
We played four or five songs which all went down well, but then, with closing time approaching it was time to pack up and walk through the seemingly omnipresent rain before catching a couple of well deserved drinks and hatching plans for more acoustic ridings-out. They probably won't be a regular thing, but every now and then when we get the itch, we'll give it a damn good, unplugged scratch.
Cheers to Sara for putting us on, the folks from Starbucks for letting us in, all the other bands on the night (sorry we didn't catch more of you!) and everyone who came down for sticking around til the end. Extra special thanks to Maya for bringing the Cello to the party!
Time to amp-up and amplify again on Friday as we're heading back into Dry Bar to kick some ear-drums to bits! Whos in?!
Cheers,
Team PMG

Hello everybody!!
Right, so a catch up on our recent ventures is in order, it involves motorways, small stages, kicking ass in the face of adversity and having a blast of a night at Night & Day.
First off we broke on through to "other side" (of the M6) for Liverpool Music Week at Mojo, lugging a huge amount of racket-makers with us. Such a huge amount in fact, that the stage couldn't really handle us, it was cramped and a certain drummer ended up literally playing with his back to the wall! However, despite the sardine-like stage compression, being thrown on first after being billed third and sound guys who cunningly unplugged cabs in the middle of songs we pulled together and played a pretty fine show. The folk in the room loved it and so did the promoter types so now we're plotting going back and smacking some more ear-drums in Liverpool......Zanzibar anyone?? A downside to the madness was the whole night overrunning badly and we had to get our gear back into its hiding place before daylight so we didn't stop too long, shame really as we'd wanted to check out the other bands and especially Killaflaw.
Midweek shenanigans out of the way it was time to head back to a familiar piece of stagey-turf for us at Night & Day, courtesy of our friends at 4Q Magazine. It always a good gig in there - a great venue, great people and a great Engineer who would never turn the power off on us! The other bands on the night were all great people, not only with great tunes, but also friendly folk which always makes a night go better - egos and stropping types are bad for gigs! We played a what can only be described as a blinder and after we were done there was rumour of another appearance in 4Q come the New Year. The whole night was a riot and for certain parties the celebrations and merriment carried on far, far into the next day, as well they should!
Now we're working out and organising songs in the key of a-lot-quiter-than-normal-but-with-extra-Cello-and-Violin for our first acoustic gig before returning to Dry Bar, guitars and synths blaring. Hope to see some of you playing out at them!
Cheers

Hello beautiful peoples!
We played a gig at dry bar as part of Manchesters 'in the city' festival last monday!!! There was drunken people head banging, a wobbly stage so whilst the guys were rocking out lil ole me was nearly being catupulted into outer space, and i made everyone pmg fairy cakes! The perfect equation for an awesome gig in my eyes!
We also had a drunken Guy Garvey from the band elbow having a wee listen to our set! All in all, a good nite, in the new look dry bar in Northern quarter. If you missed out (and you most certainly would have as we had new songage!) then all is not lost, we have a few gigs lined up for next month. Playing MTV Liverpool Music week on the 10th, and at headlining Night and Day for northern music magazine '4Q' on the 13th Novemeber.
Hope to see some of you there, cakes can be made on request :D
Much love,
Claire Team PMG

Well the Ritz was something special, really it was, we gave it everything and the response we got back from everyone was truly astonishing :D
Thank you to everyone who came along and cheered us on, this was the biggest gig we've done so far and we hope we gave you something a little special ;) The fabulous Katie Dervin took photo's of the night (she did our rather bizarre promo pix) so as soon as they've been whipped into shape they will be promptly uploaded!
We've already confirmed a date for In The City, one of the biggest events on the Manchester and UK music scene, which is up on our page for all to see, and we will be announcing more gigs in the coming weeks so watch this space...
Awesome Sauce.

Hungry Pigeon was fun wasn't it? We had a reet larf and hope you did too :)
Now some time back we did an interview with 4q magazine, this is available for free at various venues around the northern quarter as well as the usual haunts (HMV and the like), there webpage is still being updated with the article, but the author Alf Cowan has kindly emailed it over to us so we can pop it online! This is the extended version as the one in the mag needed cutting down to fit on the page (yes we had THAT much to say!)
And so, here it is;
Post Modern Geisha (PMG) are a five piece band from Manchester who began life as a solo project for Kris Keep their lead singer. This later evolved into the band 4Q are sat with on a Sunday morning on Canal Street in Manchester talking to Kris (Vocals/Guitar), Claire (Vocals/Viola/Keys), Beaver (Guitar/Vocals), Andy (Drums) and Robb (Bass/Vocals) from the group. Kris had been playing in bands within Manchester since he was 15 and then went on to study music at university where he began to develop his ideas. He then returned from university, recorded a few home demos and eventually formed a group around these recordings. This formed the foundations for the band, as Kris explains: "It gave us a starting point by playing my songs but now it's a band rather than a solo project. Everyone chips in and it's much better that way". The relationship between the band members could not be any tighter either with each member meeting in their teenage years at music college. Understanding the band member's backgrounds it's safe to say that these guys like to make things complicated and use that to their advantage. When you listen to PMG you can tell that this is the sort of group who would walk into a tidy room, mess it up and then put everything back where it was originally but stick it to the ceiling in order to make things sound better, whilst clearing room for their amplifiers. For some of the band members it was a complete change as Claire tells us: "I was a classical musician up until I joined this band, I went to Cheethams College of Music and then the Royal Northern College of Music, when we compose music I tend to lean on my theoretical background to make the band work and I love it." The music is a fascinating combination of un-Mancunian influences and this is what makes the group interesting. On listening you feel like you've entered a game of rock n roll tennis between Placebo, Tool and Hot Club de Paris all of whom are wearing big shoes, using viola's as rackets and wearing glow sticks around their heads. That sounds pretty crazy and shouldn't really work but these guys are making it happen. Its not all doom and gloom for those who are patriotic about Manchester though, the bands name is about as Mancunian as you can get, Kris smiling recalls: "I was sat in front of the TV one night and was watching coronation street, one character was being locked away in a room by this guy and she was also in love with him. I just commented to the person I was with at the time that she was like some sort of Post Modern Geisha. That's when I realised that was an awesome band name and it's stuck ever since." The band are musically chaotic at times but also extremely disciplined with their approach, this comes from the group leader Kris and influences can come from absolutely anywhere: "I am a perfectionist" Kris says "my two favourite bands in the world are Radiohead and Muse, everything they have put out I've been impressed by. I've always thought that everything is an influence though, not necessarily a positive one because sometimes you need to know what you don't want to sound like. I take elements from things I hear when I'm just walking down the street. Sometimes you are walking past a bar and can hear a loop that gets stuck in your head and eventually subliminally putting it into a song. My own personally musical tastes do tend to go to more towards more progressive styles, that's from growing up listening to bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. The thing for me has been about trying to take something like that and make it more accessible so that it's taking all of what I like about progressive music and putting it with pop music" PMG have been playing live for the last 8 months and they have been going from strength to strength. Claire describes how fast the band have come on since their first gig in Macclesfield: "On our fifth gig we were headlining the academy which was pretty amazing, our first gig was in Macclesfield and just that experience made us want to do more and play bigger gigs. We have some big plans on our agenda, we are going to get some new songs on the Myspace and are going to launch a single for October so it's a pretty exciting time". Its hard to see how in a day and age when Manchester is predominantly filled with Courteeners tribute acts that a band so diverse and eclectic would be able to break through the current set of Manchester Pop graduates, however Kris has his own ideas about where he thinks the band are best suited: "I see us fitting into that grey area with the Manchester music scene. I don't think that there are many bands that are trying to pull from what is a more experimental medium and make it something that is more accessible to the (inverted comma's.) laymen!" Claire chips in laughing: "I think we will rephrase that to general public!". With big plans on the horizon PMG are trying to keep their feet firmly on the ground and are going to take it one gig at a time before they take that next giant bound, Kris concludes: "At this stage in our gigging we are focused on making each gig bigger and a bit better than the previous one, the proof in the pudding is the fact that we are playing one of Manchester's most popular club nights next month, and that's the basic goal, to keep just getting better and better."
...awesome :D
The photos weve recently popped online were taken at the photoshoot for that interview (courtesy of Katie Dervin's considerable talent). As part of this we're also being featured on Converse's Fresh Meat music site, heres the link if you would like a look;

So with that installment complete, we bid you adieu, auf wiedersehn, ciao and a whole host of assorted goodbyes!
See you at the ritz ;)
