Current mood:  catalyzed
hey everyone,

go check out this amazing project i'm involved in. it's called "5lights". you can read/listen/watch/absorb/enjoy here!

from the "about" section:

"The 5Lights Project is a collection of artists creating stories. Each week, five artists will all interpret the same story through their own medium. At the end of the month, we'll have four stories expressed five different ways. The next month, new team, new stories. Art as free form jazz as free form art."

and here are the artists for the month of june (including lou noble who took that badass polaroid of me in my userpic)

Sam: writing
Traci Matlock: video
Mark Sarmel: illustration
Lou Noble: photographs

enjoy, mes amis.

Current mood:sunny!
hii friends

i just wanted to write you all a little love-note and give you an update on what's going on these days.

tomorrow night i'm playing a show at the gladstone hotel, which is this beautiful old space that was refurnished and schmancied up in the last few years (some would say gentrified, perhaps they're right) and now hosts lots of good music and fun things like dance parties and an erotic arts festival. at my show there will be far less skin but no less reason to dance, as i'm playing with one of the usual suspects (dan taylor on bass and ukulele) and a new face -- tony wallace! tony plays violin, banjo, accordian...really, there's nothing he can't do (except maybe play them simultaneously, but i wouldn't put it past him). it's going to be a really lovely night and if you're in toronto or close enough to trek in, you should come by and say hello.

i suppose this is sort of like the kick-off to the concert season, as i've got quite a few coming up in the next little while. there's bread and circus on may 12, and then an ecology festival in my hometown. there will definitely be more on the way, so watch the show section for updates.

and to all of you who keep asking about me coming to your town, the short answer is YES i would love to! but i can't just yet. the explanation is thus: touring costs money, folks. if you reallyreally want me to come to your city, buy a CD! buy two! i know it's a dying medium and blahblahblah, but it really is the lifeblood of independent artists. the more CDs we sell, the easier it is to tour.

but this is where the thank you part comes in. since this whole thing started, i've been receiving messages and emails and comments and blog posts and friend requests like you wouldn't believe! i've been trying my best to respond to all of them personally but i just wanted to say that i appreciate so much the outpouring of love and kindness you've been sending my way.

on that note, i want to karmically repay all that goodness by telling you about my friends, bent by elephants. they're a seven piece folk orchestra from montréal making some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard. we had the enormous pleasure of playing with them last month at le cagibi and were completely blown away by their incredible musicianship, command of melody, command of stage, sense of humour, and ability to somehow jam all seven people onto a stage not much bigger than a postage stamp. they're coming to toronto for a few dates this month and i absolutely cannot wait to see them live again. they're going to blow up, folks, you heard it here first. in the meantime, they're in my top friends and you should give a listen (my favourite these days is "saskatchewan pool").

all right, thus ends my extraordinarily long update. watch for more shows, a video made by some talented canadian and aussie friends of mine (ooooh!) and hopefully, a secret web-only release happening very soon.

much, much love to all of you. now get off your computers and go and enjoy the sunshine!

okay so here's the deal. i really want to play shows. i don't care where. in fact, i'd even like to play them in your house.

here's how it works: you email me/post a comment/whatever and say "yes! come to my house on (such and such date)" and i say "woohoo! here's a poster, put it up/email it/tell all your friends and i will do the same" and then you put your contact info in there somewhere and invite as many people as you want. then you collect some money at the door so i can pay for gas and you can pay for beer (yup i'll share it with you) and then i play a show and everyone dances and sings and is happy and maybe even hugs and then we all sigh and go to sleep. maybe i sleep on your couch, depending on how far from home i am. and then you suggest to your friends that they can do the same thing, and thus begins the process again!

so easy, right?? so easy. ahhh.

just a reminder: kay dot pettigrew at gmail. i am always open for business, folks. that's how rocknroll works.

i've been MIA, myspace. i'm sorry. don't be sad. i'm here now! and i have exciting things to tell you about, which i will now put into a list, because i like lists.

1. i have shows coming up. real ones where i play live and stuff. officially there are the burlington shows, but there's also TO (if you are wondering why i never post those, it's because 99% of them are at goodhandy's so keep an eye out), barrie, and VERMONT. more details to come about that.

2. my friend taralasky let me borrow her sweet macbook to make a couple videos, which are now posted in the video section. obviously. we like to keep things organized around here. they include a very new song that isn't quite finished and a cover you might recognize.

3. my EP IS FINALLY BEING RELEASED. we are so close to being finished. so close! damon de szegheo is this awesome dude, he's producing it, and he also did my friends' record. you may know them. they're called ruby coast and if you haven't heard of them pretty soon you will. and then you will be like, "that kay pettigrew is really on the up and up with the good music". and then you will rejoice.

4. also cool = this EP release will be happening around the third week of september. there will be one here in toronto, and one in peterborough, which will also be kicking off the long-talked-about tour. yes, i am a bit of a hot air blower. i know there's a word for that but i can't remember. anyway. if you wanna play shows together, or know of somewhere that would want me to play music, or have a mighty big living room (for a show or for me to crash on yr couch) or anything at all fun like that you should send me a message.

all right kids, that's about all for now. hope your summer is sunny and fun!!

well friends, i'm moving to the city of toronto on tuesday. so far i have one show, but i am aiming for a gajillion more.

i also have a little demo for sale. it's three songs for $5, and was recorded by my lovely friend zach. you can buy them at shows, or by messaging me. you can also email me at kay (dot) pettigrew (at) gmail (dot) com and i can mail it to you, but you will have to cover postage because i'm one seriously broke dude.

in other news, my friend carmen elle is an incredible musician and will probably take over the world someday. but for now, she has sadly broken her fingers falling off her bike! so since she can't play shows for the next little while, you should drop by her myspace page (myspace.com/carmenelle) and tell her she's great, and maybe even buy one of her CDs. you will not be disappointed, i assure you.

that's all for now, kids. keep it real.
