Farewell 09A friend of mine is standing at the sink, sipping red wine in her rubber gloves. "It's how I get through Christmas" she tells me. Me? I use music (propped up with just a snifter of Dutch courage). It's been my great pleasure these last months to be one of the judges of the Australian Music Prize (AMP), which means I have just received around 20000 free CDs, and the point is this: we live in a super talented country, and musicians, I thank you. If you're writing an album over Christmas, write well.
This years Triple J Hottest 100 Voting has begun!!!! We would love you to vote for THE START OF WAR somewhere on your list! WE WOULD LOVE THIS!

Favourite songs of mine this year have been Sad Sun by Teeth and Tongue, and You Tore my Heart Out by Mamakin, and for the second year running, anything by Bon Iver...
Local releases from Jordie Lane, Paul Depsey, Sarah Blasko, Bridezilla, Black Cab, Lucie Thorne, Orbweavers... not to mention the synth ladies...I liked this year a lot...
Hey, I’ve been doing a Tuesday shift with Sam Simmons on Triple J this month – join me there today TUESDAY, 10 – 12. Please do tweet my topics for my impromptu song each week, entitled “One casio, two minutes, and a whole lot of meaning!” (what means something to you? topics so far have included hair product, and copenhagen). Also on today’s show, what questions would you like to ask a 16 year old? Special teenage guests to answer questions! Any topic that means something to you, please tweet me www.twitter.com/clarebowditch
Come see us play this summer:
LOVE YA! HAVE A GOOD ONE! THIS IS GOING TO BE A MOTHER MOTHER OF A YEAR!
We wish you and your people all the very best, and thank you for hanging with us still, after all these years. CBx
PS - The Start of War Copycat Project closes at midnight on the 31st December 2009. We have been astonished by the inventiveness of your entries and thank you. We are looking forward to passing on your money to www.warchild.org.au!
PPS - Meanwhile, thank you so much for voting me into bronze for the EG Music Awards! You’ll be pleased to know that we were at NUMBER ONE!!! for two minutes there, before those cheeky international sensations Kate Miller Heideke and Sia got their peeps voting and we were swept away under a tsunami of prior international acclaim and excellent synching opportunities!!! No honestly, well deserved all round ladies...pleasure to share lists with you.
PPPS - We are finishing recording over January, and look to release the new album in the middle of next year. It has a name, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say it yet…I will ask. We really have put two big years and our whole selves into this one: I feel excited in my chest every time I think about it. Or is that terror? Who knows?!?!?!

Mum calls.
Says she can't work the 'Vote for CB in The Age EG Awards' link that I put in my last email.
Says "It's broken".
No-one in her village can get it going.
No -one, except Marty, of Marty Brown fame.
So here it is again:
http://www.theage.com.au/polls/entertainment4/form.html(tell your village to click there Mum)
Mum says, "Does this explain why you're trailing 6% behind Sia? And who is this so-called 'Pikelets' anyway?"
I says, "Mum, it's PikeLET, singular. They're cool ladies, man. As if I care about awards, man..." But then it occurs to me - Mum is right to be concerned. My historic reign as Yen Young Woman of the Year (Music) is just about to expire... and without a sash to wear, who am I in this world? And how will people know they need to pay me heaps and heaps more than I'm "worth" (based on a scientific Sales and Chart-Placement Analysis 2006 - 2009*)?
And what if...what if I was Born to Be "Number One!*"
I ask myself the question I often ask myself in times like these - what would Ms Plastic (Hungary) and her Management Team do right now?
That number again people:
http://www.theage.com.au/polls/entertainment4/form.html
Vote there. Forward it to your friends, families, lovers, compadres, people you do not know. Let's see if it works. Let's see if I can be..."Number One!"*
Love,
Lady Bobo xo
*"Number One!" is my original term, I made it up ages ago, and it's currently awaiting TM, so you have to pay me heaps if you say it.
**Sales and Chart-Placement Analysis 2006 - 2009*: A 'scientific' google-search done by a Festival Booker when they're deciding how much to pay any one musical act. Also considered when working out "what time of the night should this, said, musical act perform?". Other factors can come in to play here, such as how good-looking their Manager is... it used to be all about managerial aggression, now it's just about their looks and charm. There is a thesis in this, kids...
Update on The Start of War Copycat Project
The Start of War Copycat Project is a collaborative art project (inspired by Mijo, to your right), where you dress up as me, write a rhyming poem on your chest, and for each picture I get, I donate $5 to warchild.org.au. So far, we have received around 30 portrait entries, included amongst them the whole of the Riley family from W.A. (single portraits, including their dog), young women, old men, children, and a couple of sprinkles of the word "wh_re" (probably got about enough of those now...)
I have a lot more money to give away - please keep sending in those portraits! I love em!
*OFFICIAL INSTRUCTIONS..
..go like this:..
..1.Think of something that rhymes with The Start of War (use any rhyming word combination you like: all submissions welcome!) .. ..2. Write it on your chest with paint or liquid eyeliner or whatever you like (or if you’re fancy with the photo-shop, go for it).. ..3. Using "tricks of the trade", do your best to look like me/Mijo. Or not. Up to you dude: it's your artwork too. .. ..4. Take a photograph of yourself (black and white best) in “costume”... ..5. Email it to thestartofwar@clarebowditch.com with the subject/title as “COPYCAT PROJECT”... ..6. In the body of the email, please include all of your personal deets (name, postal address, phone number, d.o.b.) and please tell us that we have your permission to use and muck around with it for upcoming album/online artwork. ..
..*If you're stuck for an idea , think of this as a collective artwork that will explore the power of rumour and rhyme. Write whatever you want on your chest, as long as it rhymes loosely with The Start of War. What will our rhyme-trail say? You can take this as deeply or as lightly as you like: you might, for example, want to explore the notion of truth and lies, or of rumour, recalling that in our lifetime, we've personally witnessed wars begin over little more than wrongly "officialised" rumours. Or you might just want to play around with language: one notable rhyme Mijo suggested, and indeed sang several times in our enclosed tour-van around Europe, was "The Fart of War, The Fart of War (cha cha cha)". That was really something. ..

Breathtaking, isn't it?
My brilliant friends Belinda Wiltshire (artist/legend) and Mijo (model - from "Lamplight) went "out there" one night, and came with this masterpiece. When Mijo personally presented it to me in Germany as a special surprise, I shed a tear or two. I know you will find this very moving also. The detail of the piece got me thinking - firstly, about how good I’d look with a beard, and once I'd gotten over that, about how cool it would be if you and me and everyone here made an art project together, based on "The Mijo Effect"..... Essentially, what if you just went ahead and dressed up like me from Kirsty Argyle's original "The Start of War" photo, wrote a four word poem on your chest (anything that rhymes with the sentence “The Start of War”), took a photo, and emailed it to me? If we put them all together, what would we, as a community of peeps, have to say for ourselves? And, how cool would it be to use all of that as part of the album/website artwork for the forthcoming 2010 album!.... WHAT DO YOU RECKON?!?!? YOU, ME, ON THE WEBSITE ARTWORK TOGETHER WITH OTHER PEOPLE (and hopefully Kat Macleod!)! ARE YOU IN?!?!? LETS DO IT!!?!??!.... And let’s call it: "THE START OF WAR COPYCAT PROJECT"..... And for every photograph we receive, we will gratefully donate $5 to "War Child" (www.warchild.org.au or www.warchild.org), an international volunteer-based organisation who aim to provide immediate, effective and sustainable aid to children affected by war (I will write to you and let you know that this has been done on your behalf). Please feel free to pass this on to as many people as you like – the more we can donate, the happier I will be..... Also, if you take part, I will make sure your name is published in the THANKYOU list on my album..... So HERE IT IS - an official launch of The Start of War Copycat Project!!!....

Hansa! Touring! Earth! Birth! Oh Humour!
Hello, CB here, and it's a fine Monday morning. News just in;
In a couple of weeks, Marty and I (and our mini-roadies) are heading back to Berlin to begin recording at the famous Hansa Studios (!!!!) with producer Mocky (Jamie Lidell, Feist, Peaches), followed by a little European tour.
When we come home, how about we pop in to your town, with our newly expanded band (more details to come!), and try out some of the new tunes?
That’s right, here’s announcing an AUSTRALIAN TOUR for September and October!!!
Please note: these shows will be (mostly) intimate, (totally) unusual, and resplendent with, ah, antics. These shows will not be announced for a week, so tickets are EXCLUSIVELY for you (our mailing list) and your friends at this stage. You may remember that my last Australian tour sold out at all venues – so if you’ve got your heart set on being there, this week is for you!
WHO HOOOOOO!
27th Sept: Bangalow A&I Hall, Bangalow NSW. Tickets from Barebones, Bangalow; Mullum Books; All Music & Vision – Ballina, Byron & LismoreAnd online www.kupromotions.com.au....

MORE NEWS ON ALBUM FOUR;
Here in Australia, recording with Qua has been inspiring, and slow-going – we’ve spent most of the last two weeks putting together a perfect mix of our forthcoming single, The Start of War. Qua is amazing. We love him a lot. It’s his birthday next week.....
MR AL GORE and THE CLIMATE PROJECT:
In other news, last weekend my school-mate Defah and I spent the weekend training with Mr Al Gore, in order to become presenters of "The Climate Project" http://www.theclimateproject.org It was truly incredible, and very full on. I know people have different reactions to Mr Gore and his particular style of presenting – some find it galvanizing, others find it overly-shocking. I actually found it both; I was so shocked I spent most of the weekend cracking terrible fart jokes (entirely normal, I’m told). This was followed by a lot of weeping and sleeping. Now – I just feel galvanized. The real point is this; you cannot sincerely fault a man who dedicates his entire life to something as urgent and as life-threatening as climate change. This is our chance, and I urge all of you to be as involved as you can in the lead up to the Copenhagen Summit at the end of this year. I certainly will be.....
(NOW for some MORE POLLYANNA BUSINESS...)
HOMEBIRTH - What's it worth?
People, I've never had a home-birth, but Defah has, and Libby has, and my grandmother did it eleven times, and 1/3 of Holland still do it most days of the week, and the largest study in the world tells us that for the average woman, homebirth is as safe as hospital birth, with much better recovery outcomes and satisfaction for the families involved. I fundamentally and passionately support the idea that Australian families should have a choice about where and how they give birth, and this right is currently looking likely to be removed – REMOVED – by July 2010. Minister Nicola Roxon recently went some of the way towards allowing women continuity of care with hospital midwives, but sadly, has effectively banned homebirth in the process. This is a mistake. Here's a link to a couple of "letters written on my website about the issue" http://www.clarebowditch.com/letters. Once again, I would encourage you to stand up for the right of those who want to give birth safely in their home, as did Defah, as did Libby, and Oma Annie, and millions of women throughout history.
INTENSE!
Love ya,....CB xoxox
PS - My comments page (on the website under Open Letters) hasn't been working for about a month; I DESPERATELY love your comments, and will get this up and working again asap (my web guys are taking their first holiday in a long time...) You will know it's working when comments begin appearing under the new headings.
PPS - Mocky has a pretty swinging new album out, called Saskamodie; really great but only available o/s at this stage, so check out his website www.mockyrecordings.com and also Sarah Blasko also has a beautiful new album for release just now; so great! Check it out!

HELLOOOOOOOOOOWWWW! I have missed you quite a bit. How are you? Earlier this year, Marty and I made the radical decision to take four or five months off from touring. We painted our studio, I kept writing songs, and now we're recording them. We've still got a couple more months to go on this. What this next album will be - I still don't know. I do know that it will be different, simply because of the fact that we will be using a series of different producers who we admire. I know it will be different because it's going to be recorded not only in our back shed, but also in back sheds in Berlin (heading back over in August). I know it will be different because I wrote it mainly on piano and Casio. And I know it will be different because I am different. That's about all I know. When I know more, I will let you know, I promise. In the meantime, if you want to share the process with me, please join me on twitter - www.twitter.com/clarebowditch Twitter is weird, yes, but it's kind of interesting too. My main use of it will be to share with you little things that I find that mean something to me - pictures, thoughts, theories, funny stuff, stuff that inspires; artists, lies, books, quotes, places, opinions, and things that I'm yet to understand (that covers pretty much everything). Also - my website will be changing soon; gearing up for better things. Stage one will be an invitation for you to come along and contribute stories to my Short Tall Tales section. We can write them together if you like. I'll let you know more next month. What else can I tell you? I am going to be a guest at the glorious Charles Jenkins and the Zhivagos Blue Atlas Winter Ball at the Corner on July 4th. Tix $20 -www.cornerhotel.com Also, a treat; my friend Sarah Blasko has a new single out this month, and it's totally beautiful. I think you can hear it here - www.myspace.com/sarahblasko Life is good. CB xo

Hey There
I joined TWITTER the other day. I thought I'd better let you know. I still don't really know how the fluck to tweet, or how it all works, what with me having been hiding in a shed the last little while, but sometime between now and 2012, I'm gonna work it out!
How you doing?
