I'm happy to announce the release of my new mix, "NIGHT SHIFT" an homage to the marvellous 80's boogie era, that me and my man RENMIN have been working so hard on these past couple months.

design by : muun

"NIGHT SHIFT" compiled and mixed by RENMIN and PROOF
The sounds that came out of the late 70's and early 80's were the building blocks of hip-hop, electro, and house as we know it... so we had to pay homage to this forgotten era in dance music! "Night Shift" is nonstop mix of lost 80's R&B gems, electro-funk, and UK boogie flavor, recorded from the original vinyl pressings, and took over a year to compile. If you dig Prince, SOS Band, Mary Jane Girls, Cameo, Midnight Star, Kahif, or Patrice Rushen... or if heavy synth laden tracks with infectious basslines make you bug out, you NEED a copy of "Night Shift". Pick up your Limited Edition CD (only 100 made!) this Saturday at Madrone Lounge or reserve your copy now at soulnthehole@gmail.com

LINER NOTES
"My main motivation for creating "Night Shift" was simply to get people back on the dance floor to boogie down and have some fun! At the same time, I wanted to explore a forgotten era in dance music by digging deeper into the realm of the 1980's. I focused my selections on "boogie", "modern soul", and "disco" tracks that contained synth and electro-funk elements. Producers like Kashif, Keni Burke, and Larry Levan left an imprint of the classic dance sound that I was diggin' for. Searching for these records was no easy task, because most of these cuts were either out of print, or extremely hard to find. While most of the songs I picked for "Night Shift" may not be familiar to most, the early 80's influence on my selections are undeniable and profound.

To compliment this mix, I asked the homie, proof, to help out by sharing his take of the "boogie" sound. I also have to give props to Green Tea for turning me on to the Sharon Redd track, "Beat The Street", and for re-editing "All To Myself" featured on this mix. Our goal was to ensure that every second of this mix would keep the listeners ears and dance floors burning for an entire 80 minutes (actually 79 minutes and 56 seconds to be exact!) So enough with the chit chit chatter... Get on up and enjoy our rendition of 80's dance floor classics, "Night Shift"! ~ Renmin

"I've been wanting to make an 80's R&B or "boogie" mix for awhile now... So when Renmin asked me if I wanted to work on this comp with him, I was hella down. Growing up in that era, i've always been a fan of the classics... from Prince, SOS Band, Mary Jane Girls, Cameo, Midnight Star, to Patrice Rushen... the sounds of the early 80's always had a special place in my heart. But it wasn't until Ren played me this cut from some obscure label, Rissa Crissa, called "The Bottom Line" by South Bronx that made me just bug out! It was a synth heavy joint with an infectious bassline, and you could just picture b-boys and b-girls getting down to this when it first came out. This cut opened a new door in my search for the perfect beat, and forced me to step my digging game up for "Night Shift"...

The sounds that came out of the late 70's and early 80's were the building blocks of hip-hop, electro, and house as we know it... Born in underground nightclubs in New York, to various warehouse parties in Chicago and Detroit, to the electro-funk flavor coming out of the West Coast... this period, that bridged disco and house, gave birth to a new "boogie" sound, and signified a "shift" in dance music between 1982-85. Compiling songs for this mix was a difficult task, because there were so many great records that came out at that time... so I tried to focus my selections on electro inspired tracks, such as Rockers Revenge's breakin' classic "Walking on Sunshine '82", and Cherelle's 1984 "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" (Yup, the same song Robert Palmer ripped off in 1985.)

Speaking of 1985, I included Wish's hit "Touch Me", a delicious track featuring silky smooth vocals from Fonda Rae, that somehow ended up on the "Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2" soundtrack, of all places! Jellybean's "Sidewalk Talk" was also a no-brainer, featuring vocals from a young Madonna, who laced this dance floor favorite early in her career. I couldn't sleep on David Joseph's "You Can't Hide (Your Love)", a Larry Levan mixed monster, sampled on countless house records, and still fills dance floors almost 25 years later. And I had to pick the Bugz in the Attic's sleeper hit, "Consequences", a modern day boogie joint that sounds like it was made in '84, and shows flashes of Evelyn King, D-Train, Teena Marie and Kashif all rolled into one. Blazing hot!

"Night Shift" is nonstop mix of lost 80's R&B gems, electro-funk, and UK boogie flavor, recorded from the original vinyl pressings, and took over a year to compile. Our selections pay homage to the artists and people who made this music possible. I hope that "Night Shift" turns you on to that "boogie" sound that has been overlooked for way too long. Peace. ~ Marky"

BROWN SOUNDS
a proof mix

TURNTABLELAB REVIEW
If you're into what gets thrown around as "future soul" or "nujazz," this mix by SF selector Proof is quite essential. Registering 31 tracks deep, Brown Sound encompasses the entire scene with soul, latin, afro... old and new. Features artists such as Dwele, Aloe Blacc, Los Hermanos Latinos, Mos Def, Bugz In The Attic, Natural Self, Tangoterje, Oneness of Juju, Joe Bataan, Coke Escovedo, and others. Hip digipack packaging seals the deal. Smooth as freshly shaved legs (of a girl that is). - reviewed by the mgmnt

FMGVINYL REVIEW
"Imagine head's bobbin, relaxed smiles, and feel good vibes from music enthusiast's, together grooving in a dimly lit lounge. These were the immediate images encountered when hearing DJ Proof's delicious new blended mix CD entitled BROWN SOUNDS. An appropriate title matched nicely to the rich, artistically well-designed album cover revealing a taste of what expressive musical treats yet to be discovered. A continuous, eclectic mix of upbeat soul, hip moving Latin jazz fused nicely with world beats including African rhythms. Proof eases you in slowly with artists such as Dwele delivering a milky remix of Earth, Wind & Fire's "That's the Way of the World", followed by Aloe Blacc's sexy remix of "Bailar". The pace is picked up warmly with a remix of "Los Calenas" by Los Hermanos Latinos' sending you into a steady hip-moving groove. Bugz in the Attic hit's you with a crisp, smooth remake of Yarbrough & People's "Don't Stop the Music". Additionally Proof incorporates upbeat hip, Latin jazz from Little Kids, Tangoterje, Red Astaire, and Coke Escovedo which are a few of the artists delivering flavorful ear candy. Whether hosting an intimate get together, riding in your car, or grooving in a lounge, Brown Sounds breathes meaning to its title, music delivering soulful, rich, quality beat's, perfect for any occasion." *review by: TahiDEE

"THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON" - sly & the family stone

the elections were this week yall, and I hope everyone flexed their right to vote. without getting too political, and regardless of what your party affiliation is, the people have spoken out and called for a change. i personally hope that this marks a step towards resolving conflicts abroad and achieving peace in our world. let..s do our part to help make those changes and don..t wait for it to happen.. "you gotta get up, get into it, and get involved," like james brown used to say.. even if that means riot.

speaking of riots, and after a week the demos voted the repo..s out of the capital building, I thought it would be timely to pay homage to one of the great albums of our generation, Sly & The Family Stone..s 1971 masterpiece, ..There..s A Riot Goin On... By the time this album was released, the Civil Rights Movement in America was on the verge of collapse following the deaths of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Junior. Sly Stone, once the hero to a generation of Young American Blacks, was, by this time, in the ravages of cocaine addiction, causing inevitable tensions among the band, some of whom were battling their own demons. Out of this confusion came 'There's A Riot Goin' On,' a dark, druggy album that featured a mixture of personal, political, and inspirational tracks such as "Just Like a Baby.., ..Luv N Haight.., "(You Caught Me) Smilin'" and the ..1 pop hit ..Family Affair... The stand out track for me is the 7+ minute "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa" a slow, weird, funked-out reworking of Sly..s hit 'Thank You (Faletinme Be Mice Elf Again'). This joint is so heavy it just oozes with soul. 'There's A Riot Goin' On' inspired many artists, such as Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield to go on and do some of their best work. Riot's songs have been extensively covered, sampled, and reworked by the likes of Iggy Pop, Lalah Hathaway, Ultramagnetic MC..s, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, The Beastie Boys, Sa-Ra and so many more. If you don't own this album, go to your local record store and pick it up NOW.

and this saturday, you can too, can BE THE RIOTTT...

jay dee, your producer's favorite producer... the genius beatmaker behind tribe, de la, common, slum village, erykah, pharcyde, madlib and more... passed away on february 10, 2006 after suffering liver failure. he was one of the hardest working people in the biz, continuing to create music even after his health began to decline... making beats from his hospital bed... and even performing on stage in a wheelchair... his sound... that bangin yet soulful, off-beat-on style put detroit on the map. his new album, "donuts", just dropped and is an instant classic. fresco & massive selector will be dedicating next week's madlib "directions in sound" show (friday feb 17 at the mezzanine, sf) to the memory of james yancey aka jay dee... j-rocc of the beatjunkies will be rockin' an exclusive all jay-dee set at 9pm. peace and prayers go out to jay dee, his close family and friends... you're truely an inspiration and your music will live on forever. rest in paradise.

2005 was a BIG year for massive selector... in February, we kicked off the year on the good foot with a free Scion Sessions show starring DJ Premier, Haul & Mason, DJ P, and the Oakland Faders... we were just warming up because in April, we linked up with Om Records for the Mushroom Jazz 4 Release Party with Mark Farina... it didn't stop in March when the Stones Throw Tour rolled into town with Madlib, J-Rocc, Peanut Butter Wolf, MED, and Jay Dilla... we kept in fonky in May with a Kid Named Miles & DJ Dusk of the Rootdown Soundsystem.. and pulled out all the stops with DJ Revolution later that month. we started the summer off right when we hooked up with Fresco to throw the Platinum Pied Pipers show in June... and can't forget about that free Sneakerpimps joint starring Mix Master Mike... then everything changed... In the beginning of Fall 2005, Massive Selector made a power move, with the help of some friends, investors, and other like minds and bough SF's historic Storyville, aka the Social Club. Massive Selector started a new chapter at 1751 Fulton Street by bringing in a fresh energy and a new vibe to the venue that gave birth to the late-90's underground hip-hop revival in San Francsico that included the Beat Lounge, Mr. Brown, and the original home of True Skool. Acts such as Scratch from the Roots, Quantic, Rich Medina, John Arnold, Jeremy Ellis, Haul & Mason, Rootdown LA, Ugly Duckling, Kero One, Metro Area, and more have already blessed us with great shows this year. much love goes out to our friends from True Skool, PST, Future Primitive, Fresco, Mr. E, Blufizz, Distortion 2 Static, Vin Roc, Shortkut, and everyone in the community that has given the Social Club it's support. Without yall, it would not be possible. 2005 ended with 4 of our biggest parties to date... in August, we spread love with Dan the Automator and Prince Paul at the Love Parade Opener... in October, we hooked up with Fresco to bring you Gilles Peterson's BBC Sessions Live with Dwele & The Rebirth, an unforgettable showcase of the future of soul music today.. in December, Wonder-Full returned to San Francisco with 2 of our favorites DJ Spinna & Bobbito for their annual tribute to the wonders of stevie... later that month, The Breakestra & Cut Chemist got us all funked up for the holidays with an unbelievable live show. Whew! What a year 2005 was... but 2006 is looking even better... don't miss the finale this Saturday, December 31st for NOUVOU NYE 2006 starring the incomperable QUANTIC who's flying in from the UK to take you into the new year... Please join us!
