Oh Sleeper Interview with bassist Lucas Starr

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 1. What's it like being from the Fort Worth, Texas area when playing in other parts of the country and world?

Lucas Starr - I think once you're away from the DFW area for awhile, you start to get a sense of pride about living here. I love being from Fort Worth.

And even after seeing all of this country, and even a few other countries, I don't think there is anywhere I'd rather live than Fort Worth.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 2. What are some good success stories from the road?

Lucas Starr - Success for Oh, Sleeper has alwasy been very relative. I don't think any of us are looking for fame or fortune. Success on the road for me is when we play a city that we've never played before, and we meet some cool people. And then we go back to that same city months later, and those same people come back to hang out with us....only this time, they've brought more of their friends. That's pretty successful if you ask me. I've learned that getting people in the door to see your band is hard, and getting those people who came in the door the first time to come BACK the second time is even harder.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 3. Do you stop in at record stores in other towns to see if the Oh,Sleeper CD is there?

Lucas Starr - Haha. This is a funny question. When our record first came out, we'd sometimes stop at a mall on tour to kill time if we had a day off or something. And usually in Best Buy or FYE there would be some end-cap or display with the new Brittney Spears record or the new Nickelback record, and we'd always replace those displays with our record just to be funny. And also hope that someone might think our band was a big deal, and buy the album. :) A little shameless self promotion never hurt anyone.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 4. What's it like keeping up with Shane Blay every night?

Lucas Starr - Do you mean musically or personality-wise? ;) Both can be tricky at times. Hahahahahaha. (Love you, Shane.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 5. Oh, Sleeper live shows are the best for us fans that like to sing along with all the songs, what's it like for you onstage to see such aggression from the fans?

Lucas Starr - Man, being in a band is hard sometimes. It's really nothing what I thought it would be when I first decided to make this my life. There are days when I honestly think that no one even cares about good music anymore. Everything now is MySpace and Hot Topic hype. Some of the worst bands I've ever heard are getting huge right now and it's super discouraging, BUT playing a local Fort Worth or Plano show definitely reminds me why I chose this life. You'll never get a rush or experience something that will top 800+ people screaming your words and connecting with your songs. There have been a few shows where the crowd was so into the show that I literally found myself getting choked up. It's a very emotional yet rewarding thing to experience.

It's also highly addictive. They day that God tells me that my time is up, will be a hard day to walk away from this, for sure.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 6. The show at the Door FTW on Sat Feb 7 is drummer Ryan Conley's last show with Lucas Starr - Oh, Sleeper. Please tell us what all to look forward to at this show?

I can't ruin the surprises, but we basically tried booking a show with all of our best friends in Fort Worth who are in bands. So it's just gonna be like one huge party with tons of family and friends. There are a few things in store that I'm not at liberty to tell yet, but you won't want to miss this. It's going to be the happiest, and yet saddest day of my life. I'll miss Ryan a whole lot. He's been my drummer since I was 18 years old. It's been nearly 7 years of rocking together, and now we're all growing up but we're NOT growing apart. We intend on staying as close as possible.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 7. What is the official story of Ryan's departure real quick?

Lucas Starr - When we got back from our European tour with Underoath, Ryan confessed to us that he had another dream that he wanted to live out, and it would be unfair to us if he stayed in Oh, Sleeper because he wasn't as passionate about being in a band as he was when we first started. He's always had big life goals, and one of them had always been making a Seals team in the Navy. If anyone can be a Seal, it's Ryan Conley.

That dude has more drive and determination than anyone I've ever met.

And while it was a hard idea to swallow when he first told us, we fully support him and can't wait for the day that he graduates and becomes a Seal. We'll be right there beside him, and we wish him the best!

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 8. Who is drummer Matt Davis and how does he fit Oh, Sleeper?

Lucas Starr - While our new drummer Matt is a height challenged individual, when he's sitting behind a drum set he looks just as tall as everyone else.

:) He might be one of the best drummers I've ever seen in my life, and we're stoked to have him on board. Not many people can handle our sarcastic sense of humor, but Matt seems to take it very well. Him and Shane write extremely well together, which was something we were worried about when looking for a new drummer. It's key to have members who's ideas mesh well together and the chemistry is strong. His style is very different than Ryans, which will leave some room for new growth on this new record. And even though Ryan left some big shoes to fill, I definitely think any Oh, Sleeper fan will be extremely impressed with Matt's drumming.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 9. Will Matt be at the Oh, Sleeper show on Feb 7 at the Door FTW?

Lucas Starr - Yeah, he's been living with us since the first week of January while writing the new record. I'm sure we'll put him to work. Maybe make him sell merch or something useful like that. Haha.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 10. Anything you can tell us about a new Oh Sleeper CD and new songs?

Lucas Starr - Shane, James, and Matt have really stepped it up this writing process.

The stuff they've been coming up with blows my mind. And I'm even really happy with how well my ideas on bass are meshing with the new stuff. I've only seen the lyrics that Micah has done for 2 songs and they are creative and thought-provoking as always. I think we've successfully written a new record that sounds very different from When I Am God, yet we didn't stray from the original style of Oh, Sleeper.

The heavier parts are heavier. The singing parts are prettier. And the musicianship is a step up from the last record. This new CD is also in higher tuning, so it will have a different feel over all. But we're not selling out, so don't worry. This will be something that any fan of Oh, Sleeper will love. I promise.

OUTLAW Music Magazine - 11. Anything else we need to add?

Lucas Starr - We will be heading back to Richmond, Virginia in March to start tracking the new record with Andreas Magnusson. He produced When I Am God, and we feel that he knows our style and what we're trying to accomplish better than anyone. Plus he's a great friend of ours, and we love working with him. Directly after recording we will be meeting up with The Human Abstract in California to spend a month on tour with them as their direct support on their headlining tour. Which is going to rule, because our first tour EVER was with The Human Abstract back in early 2007 when we first started. We're hoping for a late August or early September release date for this new record, but nothing is set in stone yet. We'll definitely keep you posted!

If I'm ever broke down on the side of the road and you feel obligated to stop to help me like it is your duty or something, please reconsider. We do not need others to help us when we have God doing one hundred percent of everything for us.

Two types of people wake up in the morning. One has a need to do the responsible thing and goes forth out of duty to his fellow man. The other knows it is an honor and privilege to even be alive another day. The person that lives according to duty and obligation is bound to expect the same duty, obligation and responsibility from others. When said person does not find others being responsible enough he becomes disgruntled with others and discouraged with all of life in general. Duty, obligation and responsibility are never going to be enough for imperfect people. We need a more powerful strength and motivation.

Honor and privilege supersede duty and encompass it. The person that sees life, living and his fellow man as an honor and privilege will find himself naturally loving his neighbor as he is honored to do so. The strength comes from the fact that He is honored to have other people in his life.

This honor and the strength to love our neighbor honorably comes from a knowledge of liberty and equality. When we recognize ourselves as created equal, that we are endowed by our Creator with liberty as the core of our true identity, honor rules our being. Most all outward appearances communicate responsibility, but inwardly we know it as an honor.

Either way Im honored to have you in my life.

An absolute ordinance of God is that the borrower is servant to the lender. The USA and "We The People" have been slaves to the world bankers for a century now. We are witnessing the culmination of the takeover of the USA, not the beginning of some demise.

Ben Franklin said that the words of Christ were the most important, sacred words ever written. This business of America being founded be deists is over inflated and not true. Look up quotes that Patrick Henry stated and that whole 'deist' thing will just vanish away. America was founded by Christians; plain and simple..

Important to interject here that the key founding fathers intentions are recognized in their writings as well as the US Constitution that… God granted liberty to all equally.

Since that pendulum obviously swings both ways the only answer is that we are to cherish liberty for ourselves and that the power to help others cherish that same liberty is in maintaining morality in our own lives. We have devised a plethora of ways to coerce others to morality all of which have failed. I believe to be self evident the power to change is for our own selves. Only after we manage the plank in our own eye will anyone else respect us enough to desire help maintaining the speck in theirs. Only God can "change" other people and we have the honored privilege of effecting that change through prayerfully petitioning God, that His will be done.

i have to put all the cards on the table. i would go crazy if i did not have a handle on world history, American history and current affairs in the world and in the United States today.

since i know what i know it is a good format to reach others. there are many likeminded Christian people that like to know the truth about the United States government. most non-christians in these realms are searching for truth and answers.

my number one priority will continue to be faithful to the leading of the Holy Spirit to live in Jesus Christ. to His glory. Christ is the preeminence! Collosians 1:18.

i am a constitutionalist because i am American and our God granted liberties are recognized in that ultimate law of this land that made our nation so great. God and the US Constitution stand true especially today. i respect the rights of other people that do not hold these truths near and dear to their hearts and homes, but i cannot deny them for myself. i cannot bow to the feet of Rome in the name heavenly spiritual eyes. i can though see past it to our Holy God and the workings of the heavenly in what seems to be only physical and earthly to some.

so,.. Lets Talk!
