In case you missed it, here it is, the Spinner Video of the Day: Mason Jennings - Ain't No Friend of Mine.

"The folky singer-songwriter and his bandmates spread a political message with the aid of some animated drawings." The animations were all hand-drawn by Mason himself.

Relix Mason Jennings
Blood of Man
BRUSHFIRE RECORDS

Mason Jennings may be Jack Johnson’s perennial partner in touring, but that doesn’t mean that this slightly lesser known Twin Cities-based singer/songwriter can’t hold his own— which is clearly evidenced by his devoted fan base. On his latest effort, Blood of Man, Jennings’ signature brand of rootsy, folk-pop takes a darker and more electric turn with introspective lyrics and classic rock feel. The falsetto- laden rock stomper “Ain’t No Friend of Mine” has a Jimi Hendrix-meets-White Stripes retro slither that with muffled, gravely vocals and a bluesy swagger sounds like it could be a lost Black Keys B-side. “The Field” is a sentimental stunner with quavering tambourines and a lonesome guitar strum that conjures long-lost memories of love amidst the languid haze of summer.

Mason Jennings, a veteran Rolling Stones Breaking artist around these parts and “one of the best acoustic-based singer-songwriters you’ve never heard,” recently stopped by the Rolling Stone offices to showcase three tracks off his new album Blood of Man, which Rolling Stones called the Minnesota native’s “best album yet” in a four-star review. In addition to his Blood work, Jennings also performed a somber take on the Shins’ Chutes Too Narrow track “Gone For Good,” which Jennings was inspired to perform after a trip to Patagonia with Shins frontman James Mercer.

Mason Jennings: Blood of Man
4 Stars

Faith-based Minneapolis protest singer goes electric

What makes Mason Jennings one of the best acoustic-based singer-songwriters you've never heard of is his ragged, intimate voice and simple ruminations on God, war, hope and gratitude. On his best album yet, Jennings goes much darker, with chilling tales of addiction, madness and loss, all wrapped up in fuzzy electric guitars, feedback and raw, distorted vocals. "Pittsburgh" is a straightforward, Lou Reed-ish story-song about a teenage breakdown, and "The Field", with its primal scream on the line "I don't want no victory, I just want you back," may be the most moving anti-war song ever written from a parent's perspective.
