Degree Ceremony Demo Report – Sat 29 November
It's bad enough for animals to be kept behind bars; to be denied the space and stimulation they need, to be deprived of their natural environments and the companionship of their own kind. But what is inexcusable is for these same animals to then be experimented on, to have 'procedures' carried out on them which leave them altered, disabled, wounded and in pain.
We are meant to be living in a civilised society and yet for such atrocities to be allowed to happen, and for it to be legal, shows us to be simply despicable.
It is for the above reasons that over thirty SPEAK supporters spent six hours in the bitter cold highlighting the shame that is Oxford University to all those in the vicinity of the Sheldonion Theatre. All those who attended were adamant that the animal experiments carried out by this institution must stop and that SPEAK will be there to fight for the animals for however long that takes.
There were a lot of positive responses to the demo from those tutors and graduates attending the ceremonies showing, once again, that there is dissent within the university itself. A fact they try to hide and stamp out, but keep failing to do so.
The longer the campaign against animal cruelty at Oxford University continues, the more support we get – and SPEAK will be in Oxford day in, day out and year in , year out until the torture of animals by this university ceases. Forever.
Please support SPEAK- Visit their website for more information and ways in which you can help.

11 November 2008
Oxford University officially stated today, 11th November 2008, that its new animal torture lab is complete and that animals are in the process of being moved in. According to the University it will be fully operational by the middle of 2009, although of course it should always be remembered that Oxford has been proved to have lied consistently about this building and its use.
The opening of the lab has made SPEAK more determined than ever to continue campaigning against the horrific animal abuse carried out by this institution.
Oxford University is responsible for the suffering and death of thousands of animals; animals like Felix the macaque monkey, who after the University's researchers had trained him to perform tasks, by depriving him of food and water, had the top of his head sliced off and electrodes forced into his brain; animals like the nine macaque monkeys used in one experiment where they were brain damaged and then had rubber snakes waved in their faces, after which the researchers made a tacit admission about the lack of relevance of their own research.
SPEAK succeeded in delaying the opening of the lab for over three years and, indeed, it was only completed because the Government stepped in and would not let it fail. The costs have spiralled out of control by millions of pounds, with no end in sight of this overspending. It has placed the subject of vivisection into the forefront of peoples' minds and has made it very clear to anyone else considering building any other such labs in the UK just how difficult that would be.
Now begins the next stage of the SPEAK Campaign – we have launched BOYCOTT OXFORD – CITY OF ANIMAL ABUSE aimed at tourists both in this country and abroad, letting people know that if they come to Oxford and spend their money at any of the University's historic buildings or sites of interest they are contributing to an institution that routinely mutilates and brutalises animals. We will, of course, also continue to campaign on the streets of Oxford where we see support growing by the day.
The animals now entering this hellhole have no-one to speak for them, or fight for them, but us and we will continue the battle against the horrific suffering inflicted upon them in barbaric experiments until vivisection is consigned to the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

Barclays Bank Demonstration- 22nd October 2008-
(Pictures to be inserted)
Another successful Barclays Bank demonstration took place today in Birmingham town center- With yet again massive public support, did Barcleys bank think that they could get away with supporting such a disgusting company?
A school passed by on their way to the museum with tons of children aged about 7-8 exclaiming their shame in such practices their faces clearly expressing horror as they looked at our banners. Their teachers had no choice but to explain to them the practices of vivisection.
Hundreds of leaflets handed out, lots of petitions signed... People changing their bank accounts- BOYCOTT BARCLAYS BANK!!

The Power of Community in Birmingham - Film screening and discussions
Transition City Birmingham | 20.10. 2008 16:54 | Climate Chaos | Culture | Ecology | Birmingham
Transition City Birmingham will hold two events in the next few weeks, to raise the issues of how our communities can respond sustainable and democratically to the threats of peak oil and climate change.Every one is worried about rising oil prices, global climate change, and the uncertain future which our children face. Cuba faced its own 'Peak Oil' crisis in the 1990's. Ordinary Birmingham residents are collaborating as 'Transition City Birmingham' to find practical solutions to challenges like these. Transition City Birmingham invite you to join us to meet Roberto Perez, and be inspired by "The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil", the film which features him.
Public Film Screening & Discussion: The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil Wed 22 Oct 2008, 7 PM , Carrs Lane Church Centre - opposite Moor Street Station B4 7SX
Be inspired by how the people of Cuba have responded to their energy crisis , and explore how we can apply solutions to our circumstances Birmingham .
Public Talk & Discussion: Roberto Perez (In collaboration with the Cuba Organic Support Group. ) Wed 29 Oct 2008, 7 PM , Carrs Lane Church Centre - opposite Moor Street Station B4 7SX
Roberto Perez will discuss how the people of Cuba have achieved the remarkable transition to the "highest level of sustainable development" in the world (WWF 2006).
Entrance to each event is by donation - suggested minimum £3/£1 - to cover costs.
Roberto Perez says, "It is the focus on the three C's - Community, Conservation and Cooperation that has been the key to Cuba's survival during this crisis. Change and sacrifice has been based on what is good for the community and not based solely on needs of individuals. "

Transition initiative is about empowering local communites to become resilient to the global crises we are all facing. It is about relocalising our economies in ways that are sustainable and truly democratic. It is about re-building strong communities where positive action on the grassroots level can secure an abundant future for ourselves, our children and grandchildren. It is also about creating a positive vision of what we would like to see for ourselves, then using the collective power and genius in our communities to materialise that vision.
