Degree Ceremony Demo Report – Sat 29 November

It's bad enough for animals to be kept behind bars; to be denied the space and stimulation they need, to be deprived of their natural environments and the companionship of their own kind. But what is inexcusable is for these same animals to then be experimented on, to have 'procedures' carried out on them which leave them altered, disabled, wounded and in pain.

We are meant to be living in a civilised society and yet for such atrocities to be allowed to happen, and for it to be legal, shows us to be simply despicable.

It is for the above reasons that over thirty SPEAK supporters spent six hours in the bitter cold highlighting the shame that is Oxford University to all those in the vicinity of the Sheldonion Theatre. All those who attended were adamant that the animal experiments carried out by this institution must stop and that SPEAK will be there to fight for the animals for however long that takes.

There were a lot of positive responses to the demo from those tutors and graduates attending the ceremonies showing, once again, that there is dissent within the university itself. A fact they try to hide and stamp out, but keep failing to do so.

The longer the campaign against animal cruelty at Oxford University continues, the more support we get – and SPEAK will be in Oxford day in, day out and year in , year out until the torture of animals by this university ceases. Forever.

Please support SPEAK- Visit their website for more information and ways in which you can help.

Saturday November 29th 2008-

Whilst for some people the degree ceremonies are about celebrating their academic achievements, for the animals imprisoned inside Oxford Universiy's labs it is just another day of abuse and fear, waiting to die in painful and pointless experiments. Join us in our protests as unless people stand up and take action then the suffering of these animals will continue!

Meet from- 10.30

The Sheldonian Theatre

corner of Broad Street and Catte Street

Oxford City Centre

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have limited transport from Birmingham so if you would like a place then please get in contact as soon as possible-

Other forms of transport can be found on the National Express transport page for as little as a pound.

We also have accomodation for those who may need it.

 11 November 2008

Oxford University officially stated today, 11th November 2008, that its new animal torture lab is complete and that animals are in the process of being moved in. According to the University it will be fully operational by the middle of 2009, although of course it should always be remembered that Oxford has been proved to have lied consistently about this building and its use.

The opening of the lab has made SPEAK more determined than ever to continue campaigning against the horrific animal abuse carried out by this institution.

Oxford University is responsible for the suffering and death of thousands of animals; animals like Felix the macaque monkey, who after the University's researchers had trained him to perform tasks, by depriving him of food and water, had the top of his head sliced off and electrodes forced into his brain; animals like the nine macaque monkeys used in one experiment where they were brain damaged and then had rubber snakes waved in their faces, after which the researchers made a tacit admission about the lack of relevance of their own research.

SPEAK succeeded in delaying the opening of the lab for over three years and, indeed, it was only completed because the Government stepped in and would not let it fail. The costs have spiralled out of control by millions of pounds, with no end in sight of this overspending. It has placed the subject of vivisection into the forefront of peoples' minds and has made it very clear to anyone else considering building any other such labs in the UK just how difficult that would be.

Now begins the next stage of the SPEAK Campaign – we have launched BOYCOTT OXFORD – CITY OF ANIMAL ABUSE aimed at tourists both in this country and abroad, letting people know that if they come to Oxford and spend their money at any of the University's historic buildings or sites of interest they are contributing to an institution that routinely mutilates and brutalises animals. We will, of course, also continue to campaign on the streets of Oxford where we see support growing by the day.

The animals now entering this hellhole have no-one to speak for them, or fight for them, but us and we will continue the battle against the horrific suffering inflicted upon them in barbaric experiments until vivisection is consigned to the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

Barclays Bank Demonstration- 22nd October 2008-

    (Pictures to be inserted)

Another successful Barclays Bank demonstration took place today in Birmingham town center- With yet again massive public support, did Barcleys bank think that they could get away with supporting such a disgusting company?

A school passed by on their way to the museum with tons of children aged about 7-8 exclaiming their shame in such practices their faces clearly expressing horror as they looked at our banners. Their teachers had no choice but to explain to them the practices of vivisection.

Hundreds of leaflets handed out, lots of petitions signed... People changing their bank accounts- BOYCOTT BARCLAYS BANK!!

The Power of Community in Birmingham - Film screening and discussions

    Transition City Birmingham | 20.10.
    2008 16:54 | Climate Chaos | Culture | Ecology | Birmingham

Transition City Birmingham will hold two events in the next few weeks, to raise the issues of how our communities can respond sustainable and democratically to the threats of peak oil and climate change.

Everyone is worried about rising oil prices, global climate change, and the uncertain future which our children face. Cuba faced its own 'Peak Oil' crisis in the 1990's. Ordinary Birmingham residents are collaborating as 'Transition City Birmingham' to find practical solutions to challenges like these. Transition City Birmingham invite you to join us to meet Roberto Perez, and be inspired by "The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil", the film which features him.

Public Film Screening & Discussion: The Power of Community - How Cuba Survived Peak Oil Wed 22 Oct 2008, 7 PM , Carrs Lane Church Centre - opposite Moor Street Station B4 7SX

Be inspired by how the people of Cuba have responded to their energy crisis , and explore how we can apply solutions to our circumstances Birmingham .

Public Talk & Discussion: Roberto Perez
(In collaboration with the Cuba Organic Support Group.
    ) Wed 29 Oct 2008, 7 PM , Carrs Lane Church Centre - opposite Moor Street Station B4 7SX

Roberto Perez will discuss how the people of Cuba have achieved the remarkable transition to the "highest level of sustainable development" in the world (WWF 2006).

Entrance to each event is by donation - suggested minimum £3/£1 - to cover costs.

Roberto Perez says, "It is the focus on the three C's - Community, Conservation and Cooperation that has been the key to Cuba's survival during this crisis. Change and sacrifice has been based on what is good for the community and not based solely on needs of individuals.

Transition initiative is about empowering local communites to become resilient to the global crises we are all facing. It is about relocalising our economies in ways that are sustainable and truly democratic. It is about re-building strong communities where positive action on the grassroots level can secure an abundant future for ourselves, our children and grandchildren. It is also about creating a positive vision of what we would like to see for ourselves, then using the collective power and genius in our communities to materialise that vision.

Transition City Birmingham is a network of individual volunteers and groups who are developing Transition for the City of Birmingham.

The next Hub meetings after these events are 12 Nov, 10 Dec 2008, 8 Jan, 12 Feb, and 12 Mar 2009, at 7pm, in Jouney Metropolitan church, Shaw's passage, Digbeth (under railway archer, next to Warehouse FOE).

We joined activists in Coventry today to help raise awareness about the exploitation and cruelty involved within Mcdonalds, please visit this website for more info - http://www.mcspotlight.org/

Around 9 of us handed out hundreds of leaflets and gave away free vegan food- Which the public ate and even complimented!

Our aim to educate people about the wrongs of the meat industry and to turn away and boycott capitalistic animal and human abusing companies such as Mcdonalds! A successful day!

A thankyou to everyone who helped!

Barclays Bank Demonstration 18th October 2008

We started an outreach demonstration outside of Barclays bank in Coventry this Saturday our aim was to educate people about the wrongs of Huntington Life Sciences and their investors such as Barclays bank. Through the course of the demonstration shocked members of the public looked at our placards and said they would join SHAC and their campaign against this fraudulent science.

A young girl even bought our group some cookies- How lovely!

Barcleys diddn't like us showing the true face of their company stating that we were upsetting people- And even making their staff cry (if this is the sort of lies they spout-why on earth would anybody trust them with their money, we had been there 2 minuites were silent and haddn't even unpacked all of the placards). If we were upsetting people it was mearly because they can not handle the truth and choose to be ignorant towards reality!

The staff at Barclays bank were very intimidating even offering us around the back of their building to fight- Is that the way to end a diplomatic convosation?

Until all are free and the cages are empty.. We will continue to expose companies who have blood on their hands.

    PROTEST AGAINST ZIPPOS CIRCUS-

    EDGBASTON- Birmingham
    September 18th until September 23rd

    Calthorpe Park
    Pershore Road
    Edgbaston
    Birmingham B5 7RB

Zippos circus are coming to Birmingham between the dates of 18th-23rd september. We are planning protests against zippos for their use of animals within their acts.

There have been numerous investigations of animal circuses across the UK; which found that day-to-day violence towards animals in the circus is both accepted and common place. Violence is used during training periods to move animals about whilst feeding, cleaning etc. Footage has been collected in the past which shows animals being beaten or struck with metal bars, tent poles and whips. The majority of violence was legal then and remains so now.

How else other than dubious training and violence are animals to perform tricks exploiting their natural instincts and behaviour.

It is time we stopped using animals for our own gain and entertainment- The rise in animal free circuses shows that human only circuses are sustainable without the use of animals. Cirque Du Soleil have proven this to be the case and have a variety of shows.

Meeting points and times will be posted shortly- Can people please make their own banners as we are limited.

    Tuesday, September 02, 2008

    2nd Sept 08,

Around 6 activists gathered outside of Barclays bank in Tamworth Town Centre to protest against them for investing in Huntingdon Life Sciences and about their involvement with the NYSE.

Soon after the demo begun, a miserable manager stepped out from Barclays, threatening to "phone the police about us" - oh no! And after realising that we were in our legal rights to protest there, she then tried asking us if we'd "move further out of the way" from Barclays to protest, to which we refused and stayed put.

Every passer-by, every barclays customer and every barclays staff at this bank will of heard today about what a sick atrocity of a company Barclays has decided to invest in.

And after hearing just that, we gained much public support. Plenty of people took leaflets, said they would join the SHAC campaign to fight HLS, and one lady who'd just created an account with Barclays, came out to see what we were protesting for and once she knew she went back in and cancelled her account!

A police officer eventually arrived on the scene, and asked us if we'd protest just a few steps further infront of barclays so as not to cause so much disruption - our demonstration was almost over anyway as closing-time for Barclays was soon approaching by the time he arrived, so we agreed and some of us then stood on a near-by wall close to Barclays and became even more visual.

The demo was a success, and we gained plenty of public support who are now informed about just who and what Barclays is involved with - and have vowed against them.

Another stressful day for Barclays, and there'll be more to come until they drop HLS!
