When I first signed on to myspace I was excited about all of the great bands that I would be getting into. The truth is with so many requests from bands comming in daily you quickly lose interest in bands on myspace in general. Well now, I'm bringing you the Thursday Music Myspace Spotlight. A music(& website) review for bands who friend request out of the blue (which in my opinion is no better than SPAM or a telemarketer). It will also hopefully help me see improvements that I can make in my myspace page and music.
THE BAND: On Faith Alone
At first I thought this was a Christian band, but they assure that they are in fact not a Christian band. On Faith Alone is a four piece: Randy Rock-Lead Guitar, Luke Flurkey - Lead vocals/guitar, Ryan Stewart - Drums, Josh Duncan-Bass Guitar/Backing vocals
They bill themselves as Rock/Alternative/Grime
THE SONGS
The band brings 3 songs to the table, only one of them downloadable:
No one will see me - This one starts with a "metal-esque" guitar/bass/drum riff that doesn't prepare you for the "pseudo emo" sound of the vocals sing/whine voice (think Get-Up kids or Glassjaw without the screaming). About a minute into the song the instruments drop and it sounds much more like a Get Up Kids song which matches the singer's voice much more melodically. About a minute and a half into the song it breaks down into the more metal riff if this were Glassjaw this is were the singer would begin screaming and it seems like a change in his vocals is comming, but Luke continues his sing/whine until the end of the song. The lyrics are pretty similar to those two bands as well. The one line in the song that surprised me was this one: "So the sun will rise over these dark skies and bury the guilt laced within your eyes." I wasn't expecting such a good image followed by such an obscure metaphor. I imagine that this is the most recent song by On Faith Alone, as it is the most advanced in songwriting as well as mastering. If this is the newest one on their site, I am interested to hear new material by them. <-- Autoplayed
Your Tragic Enemy - The song starts with a interesting muddled or muted effect that quickly gets removed. This song like the previous one has several changes. At about 2:40 everything but the drums and vocals drop out. Instead of bringing the intro effect here to the vocals (which was the logical choice in my opinion) they continue them as they are throughout the song. The guitars lightly come in and then the bass comes with a very simple but very cool bassline. The song then goes into a brief instrumental break, the vocals come back for one last almost scream and then the song ends with a quick fade out. The lyrics are very similar to a Saves the Day song. Its about a guy wishing harm on his ex or soon to be ex-girlfriend. Lyricaly this one is the most interesting song on their site.
Falling Out - The guitar in this song while slightly repetetive has a great interplay with the drums, which in my humble opinion is the saving grace of this song. The lyrics are pretty straightforward about falling out. No surprises and not very interesting throughout.
THE SITE
The page is pretty simple ang cut and dried. There's 3 songs, listings of future shows, and a vote to have them on the Taste of Chaos Tour.
THE BLOG
The blog is just one entry of an update of their recording schedule.
THE SKINNY
They sound like a more progressive (more changes) Get-Up Kids or Alkaline Trio, even closer to Saves the Day. The background vocals especially sound like Get Up Kids vocal arranging. They aren't really in a genre that interests me too much. They are good for what they are, but nothing special as far as piquing my interest.
THE VERDICT
Deleted.
