Saturday December 19th The Chairs – 8pm http://www.thechairsband.com Wednesday, December 23rd No Hay Mas Burro 7pm. $5-10. Jacob Wick - trumpet, Brooklyn, Aaron Zarzutzki - no-output turntable, Chicago & Wilson Shook - alto saxophone, seattle. Jacob Wick - An “edgy, fiercely smart improviser” (Philadelphia Weekly), who Downbeat calls “exciting and curious,” his playing has been described as everything from “inhuman” (Chicago Reader) to “a Shakespeare soliloquy” (allaboutjazz.com). As a composer, performer, and improviser, his goal is not necessarily to cross boundaries, but rather to inhabit and exploit them. http://www.jacobwick.info/projects/road-trip http://www.jacobwick.info Aaron Zarzutzki is a improviser of various sorts. He works primarily with misuse and perversion of objects and systems. Virtuosity, volatility, futility, and capability are thought of. Zarzutzki currently lives, works, and plays in Chicago. http://www.myspace.com/aaronzarzutzki Wilson Shook is an improvising saxophonist living in Seattle, Washington. His music emphasizes focus, texture, chance and exploration. It exists in dialogue with its specific and contingent contexts; it is ‘new music’ in that it explores each new moment and seeks to develop a critical awareness of the present. Sonically, Wilson's music is informed by lower case and minimalist aesthetics, while embracing the full range of his instrument. Always aware of balance and the fundamental importance of space, Wilson is especially interested in incidental or 'between' sounds: material that exists on the edges and in the cracks of the conventional sonic palate. http://www.gallery1412.org/wilsonshook.html Sunday December 27th - Beer Sessions! "Winter Warmers – holiday brews and their brethren." 4-6pm Sugar Maple’s new series of beer classes, entitled “Beer Sessions". These classes are open to everyone. They take place on Sunday afternoons from 4-6 pm. Beer will be paired with cheeses and other goodies in a fun and relaxed, yet educational setting. We try to start off with general info and then work our way into specifics, so whether you're just starting out in craft beer or are a full-fledged beer geek, you'll get something out of these sessions. And they're super fun! $15 per class. Sign up by calling or stopping by the Sugar Maple. Saturday January 2nd - Vartan Mamigonian and Becca Stevens (2 separate sets) @ 8pm “A veteran of the New York jazz scene, Patrick Breiner now resides in Madison, WI. He is still an active member of New York groups such as Billy Hart's "Academy" band, NOOK, Myk Freedman's Whistle Sound Band and Suit, Bing and Ruth, and Basement Magic.

Patrick chooses to use the alias Vartan Mamigonian while performing his solo saxophone works. He is, after all, not himself when summoning everything from ferocious screams to velvety subtone from his instrument whilst weaving hypnotically rhythmic melodies. Vartan Mamigonian appears in both history and literature as both sinner and saint. Similarly, Breiner's works can be tender or abrasive or anywhere in between.” Hailed by The New York Times as a “best-kept secret” with an “impressively absorbing” debut album, Becca Stevens has established herself as a singer/songwriter of enormous talent whose songs expand and blur the boundaries of folk, jazz, and pop while engaging the the listener through keen poetic observation, rich musical language, and beguiling singing. http:// www.BeccaStevens.com http://www.VartanMamigonian.net/ http://www.myspace.com/beccastevens Thursday Jan, 7th - Surgeons in Heat 8pm. As the members musical interests drifted further towards Latin jazz and also the post-bop explorations of artists like Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, and John Coltrane, The Clams folded but was expanded and retooled to form the first version of Clamnation, which performed around Milwaukee from 1990-1994. The current version of the band was assembled in February of 1996 and, with some minor changes in personnel, has been performing around southeast Wisconsin ever since.” http://www.myspace.com/clamnationmke Saturday January 23rd – Paal Nilsen Love Trio – 8pm Cover TBA Featuring Frode Gjerstad, Nick Stephens& Paal Nilssen-Love. http://www.paalnilssen-love.com Tuesday January 26th The Rempis Percussion Quartet @ 8pm Cover TBA. Dave Rempis - alto/tenor/baritone saxophone Ingebrigt Håker Flaten – bass Frank Rosaly – drums Tim Daisy – drums. The Rempis Percussion Quartet is a free-improvising whirlwind that draws inspiration from a shared interest in West African and Latin American rhythms, coupled with American funk and free jazz. Using these influences, the band creates spontaneous music which nevertheless maintains a focus on ensemble motion and compositional structures. Led by saxophonist Dave Rempis (The Engines, Triage, Vandermark Five) the band originally formed for a house party in April 2004, and their performances maintain an unabashedly raucous energy based on relentless grooves and unrestrained blowing, tempered with occasional moments of quiet balladry. The band has released four records, including the limited edition “Circular Logic” (Utech Records 2005) “Rip Tear Crunch” (482 Music 2006) “Hunter-Gatherers” (482 Music – 2007) and “The Disappointment of Parsley (Not Two – 2009). The trio Free Fall was organized by bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, reedist Ken Vandermark, and pianist Håvard Wiik in 2001 as an opportunity to work together in a chamber music environment and without percussion. Inspired in part by Jimmy Giuffre's classic group with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow, the band quickly found its own voice, utilizing velocity, space, and sound by incorporating combinations of pulse-based and open time, distributing melodic responsibility through its fragmentation, and building expression through a dialectic between understatement and explosiveness. http://kenvandermark.com Friday, March 12 – Jon Mueller, Sture Ericson @ Frank Rosally @ 8pm More info soon.
