Urban Gospel Alliance Visionary Steps Down to Help Others Step Up Curtis Jermany Refocuses Efforts to Broaden the Reach of Independent Artists
(Oakland, CA) Curtis Jermany, the visionary of the innovative artist organization Urban Gospel Alliance, recently announced that he will be stepping down as CEO in order to better assist artists to successfully reach the urban gospel marketplace. Through GZ Underground, an online marketing and promotional firm that offers high quality e-blast, design, writing, and photography services at an affordable cost – Jermany plans to bring the image of independents up to par with that of any major label artist.
"The best way for me to continue to be a champion for urban artists is to fill the gap for what they need the most," comments Jermany. "Over the past 5 years that I've headed up UGA, I know that artists have a sincere desire to present their ministry with excellence – but the type of high quality marketing materials and better focused promotional campaigns needed to capture market share is usually financially out of reach."
Well thanks to the expanded services of GZ Underground Jermany is now focusing his energy towards, a professional image will be more than attainable by independent artists, small businesses, and ministries. The new services offered by GZ Underground will include graphic design, press release writing, and flash-based EPKs.
UGA members will benefit from this transition, as Jermany and the new CEO of UGA, Ursula D. Edwards, have pledged to continue to work closely together for the betterment of the organization and to broaden the reach of the entire urban gospel community. Edwards is the former Georgia chapter Director of UGA, and the former National Chapter Rep Liaison. "Ursula is more than capable of heading up UGA. By her holding a variety of positions within UGA, in addition to owning her own successful urban gospel entertainment company, she is completely ready to take UGA to where it was always intended to go," notes Jermany.
Insisting that this is a refocusing – not a retirement – Jermany remains as passionate about urban gospel music as he was 5 years ago when he first founded UGA. The move also includes plans for a San Francisco area urban gospel radio show. "This is just where I'm needed most, these are the skills God has gifted me with that are to be used to increase the exposure of all those with artistic ministry gifts," reflects Jermany.

Stealing Dreams PGE Walks Away With Thousands Of $ words: Curtis Jermany
"Minister" Earnest Jefferson and PGE Distribution INC (Point Of Grace Entertainment) billed themselves as the largest, privately-owned, African American Christian distribution firm in the country. A top indie outlet for Holy Hip Hop, Black Gospel, and Praise & Worship music for smaller independent labels, their top seller was Shekinah Glory Ministries - "Praise Is What I Do", selling over 120, 000 units.
Both PGE and its founder are now nowhere to be found, leaving many artists with losses in the thousands in both cash and unreturned product.
Jefferson was known to pursue many high profile indies including Christafari, Urban D, and Illect Recordings with the simple pitch. "I will pay".
"Jefferson is a very personable man on the phone." stated Mark Mohr of Christafari and Lion Of Zion Entertainment. (LOZ). "He has the gift of gab and knows the art of con. He was always easy to access and very amiable-that is until we were owed our first check then the evasion tactics began." After months of broken payment promises LOZ sent official notice regarding PGE's breach of contract. Upon receipt Jefferson informed Mark it would take 6 months to receive any payments, due to possible store returns. Two years later LOZ has yet to receive any payment of the estimated $30,000 due them.
This isn't just a one-time dispute, similar experiences are shared by many others. Josh Niemyski of Illect Recordings paid marketing fees for a total of 5 projects only to discover that monies, averaging $4,000 per release, were never spent on promised ads. And when Illect did receive a check, it bounced twice and they still lost around $15,000. "That's a big deal for a new label with a lot of personal finances at stake" states Josh.
As if these horror stories aren't enough, recent unconfirmed reports indicate that after shutting down and relocating, (owing previous landlords as well) Jefferson went on to start a new company (SPIRA Distribution, a division of SPIRA Media) utilizing the same staff, and the same company profile verbage on their now defunct web address.
It is unclear how many new clients SPIRA Distribution attained.
At press time there is still no word of current location of Jefferson, and he couldn't be reached for comment.
Mark Mohr is interested in filing a class action lawsuit against Jefferson. If any of you have similar experiences with PGE/Spira, send an email to mark@lionofzion.com

many may wonder what type of content U-ZONE Magazine carries.
U-ZONE is an industry Trade Mag For The Urban Gospel Community and the street voice of the Urban Gospel Alliance. Targeting radio, ministry heads, promoters and fans, U-ZONE focuses on hip hop, jazz, reggae, urban contemporary and comedy news and events.
Industry Commentary From Jan/Feb/Mar Issue by Attorney James Walker (un edited version)
Gospo Centric, Verity, EMI, etc…: A PLEA FOR OUR EXECUTIVES TO SAVE THE ARTISTS AND FOR OUR ARTISTS TO SAVE THE EXECUTIVES
NEW YORK – Over the years, I have written many articles, essays and commentaries on the music industry, legal issues and general entertainment matters.
However, this article, by far, has been one of the toughest articles in recent times for me to write as I see the state of our gospel industry.
As a former news reporter, I covered over 100 homicides and murders, but the recent slayings of many of the jobs of our black executives in the gospel community and overall black music community, leads me to feel like I am witnessing career assassinations of many of my brothers and sisters who helped build this gospel industry the past 15 years.
For those who do not know or have not followed, let's take a look at the last few years at "our" Gospel Industry" and the changes in the leadership as we become a billion-dollar industry and corporate America now wants to come to the fellowship and profit on it.
EMI's Shawn Tate, one of the classiest guys and brilliant marketing minds in the industry, single-handely, helps build the EMI Gospel company to its current success, including great marketing work on Tri-City Singers & Donald Lawrence, Smokey Norful and Darwin Hobbs to name a few. Tate is gone, shown the door.
Jerry Mannery: helps build Malaco and a slew of great gospel artists in that family, including Mississippi Mass, Dorothy Norwood, Men of Standard and The Caravans to mention just a tidy few. Mannery is no longer with the company and reportedly working in Chicago (reportedly he resigned, but after what he built how could a company not offer the house to keep him?)
Vicki Mack-Lataillade, a creative genius, builds arguably the most successful gospel label ever in Gospo Centric bringing us the likes of Kirk Franklin, Tri-ni-tee 3:5:7 and Kurt Carr, to name just a few. She merges or sells her company to Zomba a year or two ago and today, she is no longer with Gospo Centric (reportedly her contract was not renewed and she has until end of the year to leave the company).
Mickey Carter, a talented lawyer, who worked in the business affairs and publishing offices of Zomba prior to the BMG-Zomba merger. He's no longer with the company, for whatever reasons.
Alvin Williams, powerful young brother working for Music World/Sony and building their gospel presence. He's no longer even working on the music label side anymore, but moved on to Gospel Music Channel. Indeed, a promotion, but the corporate gatekeepers should have kept him in the music industry for his vision and thinking outside of the box. Monica Coates: a young, rising star at Verity, who worked on various great albums including Richard Smallwood, Twinkie Clark and Donnie McClurkin's, to name a few, while at Verity, is strangely no longer with the company and no one knows the whole story?
Jackie Patillo introduces us to Israel, Lisa McClendon and Stephen Hurd while heading up A&R at Integrity, but she's now with Zomba. How could Integrity not create an environment that keeps this diamond in the rough and beautiful Godly being?
Tara Griggs-Magee: aside from Demetrus Stewart, Griggs-Magee is arguably, the most talented of several female executives to be terminated. There are widespread allegations and rumors that not only was she let go by Sony Urban, but she was escorted out of the building with security and no one has heard anything from her in recent weeks or in terms of her future career steps.
Lastly, Max Siegel: after helping the label, by any means necessary, build Verity to a gospel powerhouse, he shockingly announces his retirement to go work with the Dale Earnhart race car companies. Very strange and unexplainable to many.
And, even further, while one of the respected and most talented Gospel Industry execs, Jazzy Jordan leaves then returns to Verity, we are told in a press release, "there will be no President" at this time of Verity?
And, let's not overlook Ms. Brenda J. Culpepper and her pioneering to bring us the East Coast Mass Choir and early works of Kirk Franklin, John P. Kee and Lucresia Campbell and how the industry has overlooked her talents for years. She should be running Verity right now.
Or even Telisa Stinson, who created Men of Standard.
The list goes on-and-on.
All and all, these firings, resignations, terminations, departures or whatever you want to call them, really pain me first as a gospel music lover, but then scare me as it appears our black gospel music may be controlled by corporate giants now who have no connection to the very people who developed the music.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, gospel music album sales experienced a double-digit percent increase in sales. Even as of July of 2006, nearly 18 million gospel music albums, including those sold on the internet, were purchased by consumers. The WOW Gospel Projects, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Juanita Bynum and Mary Mary, among others put millions of dollars in the corporate bank accounts of these major companies.
So we must wake up and realize that in 5 years, the Gospel music industry could be as big as other genres and make even more billions for the corporations. It's not 1992 anymore, around the time when Verity first arrived or Gospo Centric was a small garage-like building in Inglewood, California, with a small staff and a few volunteers and PepperCo was a similar operation on the East Coast, both cranking out hits with limited budgets, but unlimited creative talent.
It's the new millennium and "our" industry, that we built with finger-snapping, foot-pounding, hand-clapping and head-bopping grooves is about to slip right out of our hands, if we don't wake up and mobilize ourselves.
In otherwords, like hip-hop, the Gospel Music Industry will become big business and controlled by bean counters and corporate titans who have no idea of The Reason Why We Sing.
Sony will control Verity, Gospo Centric, Sony Urban (if still there), and all of the Zomba gospel companies, a total of nearly 60%-65% of the market share and billboard charts. In a billion dollar industry, this is very scary for one company to have this much dominance and control and a loss of black executives.
Given all of the moves, first I pray for all of the executives I use above solely for examples of the state of our industry. But, I secondly challenge the executives who are still able to release the debt of the gospel artists, turn over their masters and do whatever you can to empower the artists before your departure.
Let the artist move on and get out of this corporate circle that they never planned for when signing with a small Verity Records or Gospo Centric. None of these artists could have seen these mergers, etc. and the corporate gorilla they now work for and our signed to for 5-7 plus LONG years.
Thirdly, and almost as most importantly, I urge the gospel music community, from Black Gospel Promo, to the leaders of Gospel Industry Roundup, to Gospel Flava to Gospel City, The Stellar Awards, The GMWA, Gospel Today and even the Bobby Jones Retreat staff to organize and call a Summit or meeting to discuss the serious plight of our industry and get a game plan to preserve our jobs, our music and our future.
Our talented executives are being shown the door, or resigning or simply put: no longer in the house to shape, drive and control our music.
It is critical that we unite now and call a private, close-door meeting to discuss the state of our industry and how we can maintain control of our music, the direction of our industry and the overall ministry of gospel music as it goes forth.
In the meantime, me and my team at Walker & Associates, will continue to pray for all of the executives who will spend this Christmas unemployed or in transition as well as pray that our industry unites for the longterm survival of our music.
Admittingly, as one of the most active lawfirms in the gospel industry, we have had our battles with these labels and executives over the decades, but at the end of the day, most of us were pushing for the preservation, integrity of our music, our artists and our gospel industry and community.
Look very carefully at what happened in hip-hop: it was a music from the street with DJs and rap artists selling music out of their trunk and maintaining its authenticity and integrity. Now, it's controlled by corporate honchos who will allow violence, drugs and material glamorization to permeate our black music radio stations and communities.
As a result, our children, instead of hearing Al Greene and Marvin Gaye are given messages of "Get Rich or Die Trying", "I'm A Playa", "It's All About the Benjamins" and "F*** The Police".
If we do not do something now, the risk is that all consciousness could be lost in our Gospel Music and it will merely be controlled by big corporate businesses with no intention of saving souls and Changing Lives or employing people that truly live and believe in The Gospel.

Those who know me can attest to the fact that I remain pretty neutral publicly when it comes to the antics of various ministries. They also know I can be very opinonated privately about those same antics but choose to not want to contribute to the seeds of discontent and division within the kingdom. However I received an email today that just blew me away and its took me a lil bit to keep from being one of those folks who send an email calling for mass reaction one or another. Instead I decided to share here. I'm interested in your opinion.
A lil history: The Official Christian Comedy Association and I used to have a relationship. The relationship is ended because i dont agree with how some things were done during that relationship. I will leave it at that and hope peeps dont take that to mean im bitter about sumthin. (i'm not and wish everyone involved the best) It should also be noted that there is a caucasion based and much older, very well established org called "the Christian Comedy Association" yes they are upset that another group would come along and slap "official" into their name. Enuff history less i bore thee.
OCCA Invites Michael Richards To Participate in The 2nd Christian Comedy Conference Who: The OCCA (Official Christian Comedy Association) is a Christian Based organization designed to bring Christian comedy to the forefront. The OCCA is predominately African American. The OCCA is here to motivate, and breakdown barriers, while motivating good clean comedy. What: The OCCA has accepted the apology of Michael Richards that he gave on Letterman on Monday November 20, 2006. On November 17, Richards was doing stand up in Los Angeles and made many racial slurs, names and referred to lynches. Richards (who played Kramer on Seinfeld), later apologized, but many of the African American community, and many others as well, have not accepted his apology. ..The OCCA however, believes in forgiveness, and would like to help Richards restore himself, if he so chooses, by inviting him to participate in our conference where we could privately meet him and to see how to mend the situation. This is what our Christian values teach us..., says OCCA president Antonio Johnson. Why: The OCCA firmly believes and proves that comedy does not have to be derogatory or sexual to be effective. ..Laughter should be like medicine to the soul , instead of poison--spreading hate and disrespect.., says Johnson, ..We acknowledge Richard..s behavior was wrong, but since he has apologized, we are open to helping him heal the wounds he has caused... When: The 2nd Gospel/Christian Comedy Conference and Showcase will take place on January 10th & 11th , 2006, with a reception on January 9th , which is the same week and city as The Steller Awards. Where: Nashville, Tennessee The OCCA will host the 2nd Gospel/Christian Conference and Showcase ..The Movement Has Begun... The purpose is to prepare and present important information to those desiring to disciple others through Gospel/Christian stand-up comedy. Through fellowship and networking via conference, The OCCA hopes to raise awareness in the community for the Gospel/Christian working in the stand-up community. The showcase will allow comedians to showcase their talents, which will be recorded live. The conference is the same time period that the Steller Awards are. The 1st Gospel/Christian Comedy Conference and Showcase will be available on DVD in stores December 5th 2006 For more info please log on to: www.officialchristiancomedy.com Press and Media inquiries: AIM PR- Ashley Sousa Email:AListMedia@excite.com
END BLOWN AWAY MOMENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now time for your opinon. Does anyone find that at the very least....interesting?

Current mood: accomplished
The following is from the upcoming issue of U-ZONE Magazine, currently at the printer. This is by far our best work yet. From design to writer quality and content, we have definately taken it up a notch to compete not just with other "gospel" publications but it is my desire/task to make U-ZONE stand against any and all publications. This means we need to fill some open positions ASAP.
The next ish returns as the Official publication of the 07 Holy Hip Hop awards and will also make a presence at the Stellars. As a special treat, subscribers and select peeps should receive a copy of DJ Lace's special Mixtape series. (for opportunity to be on this mixtape, call 888-571-3949). We also hope to add at least 8 more pages
IMMEDIATE U-ZONE NEEDS Proof Readers (must be in Oakland Bay Area) Sales Reps News Editor Additionally we will accept materials from potential writers and reviewers. For further info please write info@urbangospelalliance.com or call 510-472-0177
PUBLISHERS NOTE: U-ZONE Magazine Nov/Dec Issue. This issue is going to print a week before Thanksgiving, and as such, I am in a rather appreciative mood. Not that everything has gone smoothly this time around .. in fact I would say it is just the opposite. Both those that I work with and those that are close to me are dealing with serious issues from illness to financial stress.
But oftentimes, going through tough trials is the case for folks who are working to expand the Kingdom. So instead of letting those things derail me, I am letting them remind me of how thankful I am.
Because even amongst the difficulties, God always gives hope and shows that He is still running things. Keep your eye out for those bright spots in your life that are in the midst of burdens.
For instance with this issue, a definite bright spot is that we added a new column. Be sure to check out Inner Court, a music law advice column written by Courtney Coates, Tonex..s lawyer. And despite the high failure rate for startup magazines, this is 7th issue and industry support, subscriptions, and street cred is increasing with each release.
Not to mention the fact that all urban genres across the board seem to be gainer wider acceptance both within and outside of the church walls. And oh yeah, did I point out that God is still on the throne?
So for those things, even in the face of some irritants and ordeals, I say Thank You.
Stay Focused - Stay Blessed Curtis Jermany

Bushwick Bill, best known for his affiliation with the 90..s secular hip-hop group Geto Boys and their hit song ..My Mind..s Playing Tricks on Me.., attended the October 9th UGA Artist & Industry Mixer along with many of Houston..s urban gospel elite.
Brought to the mixer by Much Luvv Records CEO Tre9, Bushwick Bill graced the stage following an urban artist showcase hosted by DC the Gospel Comedian. After informing attendees that he had given his life to Christ and no longer performed or recorded secular hip-hop, he ministered one song for the awe-struck audience. He rounded out his debut performance by playing a few tracks from his upcoming Holy Hip Hop project.
..It was awesome to hear his testimony and to know that he can affect many lives in the secular community because he is so well known,.. stated UGA Houston Chapter Rep Charrise Barron. ..It..s an exceptional start for his holy hip hop career - and it made our event extra special...
Sponsored by More Excellent Media Group and Drake Marketing, the mixer also featured DJ Primo and performances by Chad Brawley & AYC, Baby Ben & Kamoflauge of Crossroad Records, and Jermaine Love & Unity. Urban gospel industry personnel attending the event included D. Ware of Upper Room Records, Sketch the Journalist, UGA Georgia Chapter Director and Manifestations, LLC. CEO Ursula Frederick-Brown, SoulMuzick Recordings executive Monetana, and recording artist Loretta Williams Gurnell.
This was the first event since Barron took over as Chapter Rep and rebuilt Houston..s chapter. ..I..m really thankful to God - the turnout was wonderful, the audience participation was excellent, and the enthusiasm and fellowship was awesome,.. said Barron. ..We..ve set the Houston chapter on a course for great success and built momentum for many more outstanding events...

ok.
i really had no intention of doing a blog today (altho ive deprived yall for far too long) but going through my daily deluge of emails today i came across the stellar nominations.
my interest ofcourse went directly to hip hop which is as follows:
Category #23 - Rap/Hip Hop Gospel CD of the Year
· Da' T.R.U.T.H.; Cross Movement Records Presents... Da' T.R.U.T.H. ; Cross Movement Records
· Lecrae; Real Talk ; Cross Movement Records
· DaCapo (Emmanuel O. Edili); Simply DaCapo II:II ; True Life Jazz
· Various; Future Leaders Outreach Network Presents... Pursue Your Dreams; True Life
Interesting- As the stellars i believe do try to do a better job, its unfortunate that the category only allows for 4 finalist, this listing shows that there are some labels doing they job in gettin they folk nominated. (refer to an older blog on gospel music award shows and nomination processes to see what im talkin bout)
do i agree with this listing? nooooo. Da T.R.U.TH. is always deserving. Lecrae while hot, im not sure released during the so called time period for consideration. Who is DaCappo? ok i have this cd and heard plenty of hype from his guy who really talks tooo much slick hype. (be careful how you brag in your presentations. humbleness can take you far). in other words, i havent bothered to listen yet. and the other group i havent heard or seen but im willing to bet its not a complete compilation of hip hop, (if any)
anyway now imma have to go listen to decappo and see what he about. maybe ill be surprised. regardless, as ive said in earlier blogs, yall in that genre need to join sagma and take part in the voting process. dont sit back and complain about this years, or previous years results. its kinda old anyway.
ok. thats my 1 cent. (less a penny cause im not givin yall all of what i really feel)
STAY FOCUSED-STAY BLESSED
