Let’s go baboon presents...

NEW MORNING BLUES – www.myspace.com/newmorningblues

THE SILVER ABDUCTION – www.myspace.com/thesilverabduction

8pm till late...

The Wilmington Arms, 69 Rosebury Avenue London EC1R 4RL, 020 7837 1384 – www.myspace.com/thewilmingtonarms

Golden Animals – www.myspace.com/goldenanimals

This is a must see, rare central London show from one of the finest live acts around. They are performing as part of their festival tour (Summer Sundae and Green Man). They provide an intense psychedelic blast of far-out blues rock following the traditions set by The Doors. File with Two Gallants, Dead Meadow, Kings of Leon...
Golden Animals were an experience. The smell of incense, the sheer wall of sound that attacked the senses, and these two rockers going at it really took the audience to a place out of time. LoudVine.com

She Keeps Bees – www.myspace.com/shekeepsbees

We’re delighted to add She Keeps Bees to the line up. Here is a recent review from The Guardian:
This stripped-down blues-rock duo are an anomaly in their adopted home of Brooklyn. While most of their neighbours are painting alt-pop into kaleidoscopic new colours, this compelling debut cleaves to a version of rock that is sparse, soulful and defiantly retro. White Stripes comparisons are inevitable, not least because of the thrillingly primal way Andy LaPlant thumps the drums, but it is raw emotion akin to Cat Power that comes through most strongly on tracks such as "Release" and the startling "Bones Are Tired", on which Jessica Larrabee's unadorned voice is at its most desolate.

New Morning Blues – www.myspace.com/newmorningblues

Like Television playing songs from The Last Waltz... low down dirty troubled blues in the Jesus and Mary Chain mould, building up a strong London following, they’ve recently at Alan McGee’s Death Disco night and are formed by Ian De Sylva who has recorded for Rough trade and Medicine...

The Silver Abduction – www.myspace.com/thesilverabduction

The phenomenal new project from vocalist Allison Brice (The Eighteenth Day of May) and composer / producer / all around pop-svengali Andy Dragazis (Blue States). The Silver Abduction's music enjoys a slightly otherworldly 1950’s feel, but with an entirely modern expression. Lush arrangements perfectly compliment Allison’s mesmeric vocals, and the result is an entirely unique sound, rich and enchanting...

Let’s go baboon update – April 2009<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />....

.. ..

April greetings to you and you and you and Laurence.......

So, for our April update, we can confirm two new Let’s go baboon shows in two fine venues, with 7 mighty acts and 2 resplendent DJs... also news on our monthly nights at the Paradise.......

.. ..

MARCH AND THE PARADISE....

March went well all told. The Crookes are definitely an act to keep your eyes and ears on, they set The Paradise alight and already have a strong following. We salute thee and look forward to seeing you in London town again...The show with The Cedars and Extradition Order was actually our 3rd and last of our monthly nights. We decided to stop as we are far better doing regular, but ad-hoc gigs allowing for an eclectic mix of acts and use of different venues... We are very grateful to Liam and The Paradise, it is a terrific venue, they are putting a lot of effort into everything there and I think over time, it’ll become a great venue...Anyone who lives in the area of Kensal Green should support it, as it is doing a great job.....

.. ..

APRIL 29th – DANNY GEORGE WILSON @ HALF MOON, HERNE HILL.......

As Danny George Wilson was so phenomenal, we decided to get him back in quick smart for a headline show. Originally planned as part of The Paradise monthly night, we’ve moved it south of the river to the Half Moon Pub, Herne Hill. It is a great venue, been going for years and I very much looking forward to taking Let’s go baboon out there. It is very easy to access (Herne Hill station 3 minutes walk away, Brixton 10 minutes by tube, loads of buses) and I really think it’ll be a treat of a gig. As well as Danny, we’ve our showcase act, the rather fantastic Citizen Helene along and she’ll be joined by The Racists. Also, a welcome return for The Diamond Family Archive (performed brilliantly at The Luminaire supporting Adrian Crowley back in 07) and Woodpecker Wooliams.......

For full listings & tickets head here... in summary though: Danny George Wilson, The Diamond Family Archive, Citizen Helene & The Racists, Woodpecker Wooliams plus DJ: Gareth Main – Bearded Magazine/Fleeing with Pigeons records) - £3 adv, 7.45pm at The Half Moon, Herne Hill... ....

.. ..

JUST ANNOUNCED – FULL LINE UP/JOINT HEADLINE – 26th MAY – CHARLIE PARR, NANCY ELIZABETH + more....

Tickets for the Charlie Parr show on Tuesday 26th May at The Luminaire finally went on sale on April 1st. Within twelve hours we’d sold 11 tickets... not quite Michael Jackson, but unheard of for me. Those 11 are right though, this is going to be a top gig. You know our views about Charlie, a genuine talent and always a pleasure. It is a double headline though and we welcome Nancy Elizabeth for the first time. I saw her a couple of years ago at The Local’s fabulous Ssshhh evening (or was it Knom then?) at The Spitz and have been hooked ever since. Joining these two headliners will be My Two Toms, quietly unassuming but charmingly brilliant nonetheless. I did my listings, then read this fabulous description for them on Ents24: ....

Two nice, quiet, unassuming Clark Kents that become the Supermen of stringed instruments when exposed to ukeleles and guitars. Maybe the only band who can recreate a little piece of Camberwick Green wherever they play, allow yourself to lie back and drift away. Lovely!....

.. ..

In addition, we’re grateful to Honest Jon’s records for DJ-ing. In particular, they’re hopefully going to be playing some obscure traditional US folk 78s (not literally the 78s but you know what I mean). Charlie has just recorded some stuff for a forthcoming release of their ever expanding and great record label.......

For full listings & tickets head here... in summary though: Charlie Parr, Nancy Elizabeth, My Two toms plus Honest Jons DJs – The Luminaire Tuesday 26th May – Tickets here.......

.. ..

Compilation CD....

A reminder that our first volume Let’s go baboon compilation CD is available for £3 and at our gigs. It features exclusive tracks from MJ Hibbett and The Diamond Family Archive, plus rare tracks from Ish Marquez, Maggie8 and Lazarus Clamp... ....

.. ..

That’s it for now. Jen is busy working on some very exciting things for summer from the land of baboon (like land of leather, but furrier, better music and not in administration). News of which in our May update.....

.. ..

Thanks to all of you for your continued support.......

 ....

Cheers for now....

DJs – Honest Jons Records – www.honestjons.com ....

The Luminaire, 311 Kilburn High Road, London, NW6 7JR - 020 7372 7123....

.. ..

Charlie Parr – www.myspace.com/charlieparrduluth ....

.. ..

This is a one off London show for Charlie Parr, following the release of the startlingly good ‘Roustabout’ on Misplaced Music. It isn’t surprising that he is regularly invited back to the Bath International Music and End of the Road festivals. A genuinely heartening performer with music to tap your toes and weep in to your beer in equal measure, Charlie’s music has an appeal that spans genres, the authentic voice and utter lack of pretence of the music speaks to everyone.......

.. ..

’So many country-blues artists are crippled with retroism and purism, but he has brought wonder and excitement to this music. Even Charlie's foot coming down on the floor boards screams with more soul and life than most anything - past or future. ‘ - Alan Sparhawk, Low....

.. ..

“Lots of blues musicians get the notes right. They play authentic chords and patterns on authentic instruments. They sound just like the old days, except they don't. Charlie Parr has somehow inhabited this music from the inside, letting it out in a way that's as natural as breathing -- and as vital.” Splendid Magazine ....

.. ..

Nancy Elizabeth – www.myspace.com/nancyelizabethcunliffe ....

Nancy Elizabeth has that something special, her pure voice and enchanting phrasing backed by delicately plucked guitar or atmospheric piano playing and a self-effacing gracious stage presence is alluring. Nancy is a young singer and multi-instrumentalist, with a beautifully unadorned voice who has been stunning audiences in folk clubs, concert halls and cafes across Mexico, Spain, Manchester and beyond. Currently putting the finishing touches to her new, piano led, second album for The Leaf Label she has also recently been recording with James Yorkston and Susumu Yokota as well as playing with Efterklang, Tunng, Rachel Unthank and The Winterset.

Nancy comes from a verdant North West scene, centred around Manchester, full of players and artists working with/around folk music history but pushing it forms into new alternative directions. She has a folk leaning but her atmospheric and emotional songs also align her closely with songwriters such as Thom Yorke, Nancy Merchant and Mark Hollis.....

  ....

"Nancy Elizabeth is Northern England's most beguiling new folk singer…enchanting" Flux

....

My Two Toms – www.myspace.com/mytwotoms ....

.. ..

The mighty instrumentalists, My Two Toms, formed in Newport in 2001 and moved to Bristol in 2002. One of them is called Cops, the other one Stubbs. They play instrumental songs on banjo, guitar, ukulele and xylophone. My Two Toms have supported artists as diverse as Kimya Dawson, Herman Dune, Joanna Newsom, Charlie Parr, Animal Collective, Nina Nastasia, and Jeffrey Lewis. My Two Toms continue to write and play and are currently working on their new record featuring their sometime collaborators Matt Jones and Kate Wright (Movietone, Crescent)....

.. ..

“It hurt right, like, you know, in the heart, where it's at, it spoke to me, straight, you know? and I was there, I was a My Two Toms fan. So, I bought their album after the show, wished they had it spinning 78RPM, it would have fitted their style. And then, well, I still have it, still listen to it, and I’m glad someone’s re-releasing it. I’ll buy it again, I’ll put it on for someone, a good friend and I’ll go: “Hey! You gotta listen to this, man, listen to this tune, man, it’s awesome!” or something like that!” - David-Ivar Herman Dune....

 ....

Stage times: Nancy Elizabeth – 10.20, Charlie Parr – 9.00, My Two Toms – 8.15....

Danny George Wilson – www.myspace.com/dannygeorgewilson ....

Danny George Wilson has spent the past decade as singer, guitarist and one half of the sibling songwriting team behind the celebrated UK band, GRAND DRIVE and released one of the finest albums of 2008, DANNY AND THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD, on Loose records.  Danny writes and performs simply beautiful tunes, and is a compelling act live. ....

'A soulful songwriter who sings with immense, gentle strength' – MOJO....

'Wistful, elegaic, summery and all round gorgeous' AMERICANA-UK....

.. ..

The Diamond Family Archive – www.myspace.com/thediamondfamilyarchive ....

The Diamond Family Archive is the delightfully experimental yet always melodic act of Laurence Collyer. Crossing the haunted soul of Lambchop with the quiet folk sweetness of Mark Hollis. A hushed vocal delivery backed by a beguiling mix of electronica and traditional instruments to devastating effect.

“Strange and tender songs built around layered loops of live guitar, lap steel and electronica. Leftfield, oddball and gorgeous, a beautiful and fragile noise and sublime lo-fi melancholia”- Stolen Recordings

....

Citizen Helene – www.myspace.com/citizenhelene ....

We welcome Citizen Helene as our showcase act for the evening. So convinced we are of her potential, we included stand out track P.S I Don’t Love You, on the first Let’s go baboon compilation. Citizen Helene is a genuine talent, Beach Boys-esque harmonies drift beguilingly over a plaintive acoustic backdrop to remarkable effect. Live, Citizen Helene is joined by her a girl group called The Racists... ....

Woodpecker Wooliams -
www.myspace.com/woodpeckerwooliams ....

We are charmed and delighted to welcome Woodpecker Wooliams, an enchanting ethereal folk act featuring clarinets, harmonium, whistles, omnichord, bells, recorders, woodblocks, celtic harp... She recently performed a stunning live session on BBC Radio Devon. Woodpecker Wooliams is signed to Autumn Ferment Records, a label ‘dedicated to foraging the musical hedgerows for unique and captivating music’... marvellous.....

.. ..

DJ: Bearded Magazine – www.beardedmagazine.co.uk ....

Truly independent, truly fabulous music magazine, Bearded is an excellent read, has an unrivalled ability to pick music you should be listening too. It is a genuinely well run, enthusiastic without being over bearing, and generally an establishment we entrust to spin some discs before, betwixt  and after the acts.......

..Extradition Order-.... ..www.myspace.com/extraditionorder.. ......

.... ....

..Dapper dressers, Antifolk scenesters & friends of Jeff Lewis, Extradition Order are making a real name for themselves. They sound like New York 60s garage band The Sonics: their recent single ‘Wibbling organ and a vocal best described as demonic; this actually sounds like it's got the dust and scratches of 30 years in a bar-room jukebox ingrained into it (Musicdash.co.uk).  Angry Ape said – ‘this trio waste little time in kicking out the jams’. ......

.... ....

..The Cedars – ..http://www.myspace.com/theonlycedars..  ......

..
Describing themselves as a knifeblade scraping down against the iron in your soul and a bluesy Americana throwback, The Cedars have taken London by storm with their combination of outlandish vocal talent and Calvinist work ethic.......

.... ....

..“Shuffling, rootsy Americana 'n Country offset nicely by singer Chantal's beautifully silky, lilting voice - singing songs about "dirt and shame in that stony ground”. Live, the band take on a more raucous feel, like the soundtrack to a wild, liquor-fuelled hoe-down.” - MusicMart......

.... ....

..The Crookes – www.myspace.com/thecrookesmusic ......

.... ....

..The Crookes are not pickpockets or pilferers, but rather were formed in a leafy Sheffield suburb of the same name. Born from a mutual love of 60's pop and rag-time indie, expect sing alongs, hand claps and war-time Romance. They have supported The Wave Pictures, Peggy Sue, Mumford & Sons and are building an impressive live reputation in their own right... catch em here first.........

.... ....

.."The Crookes represent everything that music should be with joyful insatiably catchy songs...Their live performance is also shaping up to be impeccable, especially in its uncanny ability to put a smile on the face of every audience member" Sheffield Steel..........

MONDAY 1ST DECEMBER 2008

STANLEY BRINKS

ISH MARQUEZ

CONGREGATION

CLEMENCE FRESCHARD

& DJ

7.30PM

THE NAMBUCCA, 596 Holloway Rd, London – 020 7272 7366

TICKETS: £5.50 ADV / £5.00 NUS / £6 DOOR

 www.wegottickets.com/event/39047

Full listings:

Stanley Brinks - www.myspace.com/therealstanleybrinks

Stanley Brinks was formerly Andre Herman Dune of the French/Swedish folk rock band Herman Dune. His Jonathan Richman inspired, calypso tinged songs are as honest, funny and poignant. 'Brinks' solo work is just as quirky but still resonates from a classic New York songwriting background, with waltzy grooves, Balkan influences, bar-room horns and swing elements all shining through' Puregroove 'The new face of sweetly swoonsome Herman Dune'. Timeout London

Ish Marquez - http://www.myspace.com/ishmarquez

New York antifolk legend from the same stable as Kimya Dawson & Adam Green. Backing band are David Beauchamp, of Jeffrey Lewis & the Jitters and Stanley Brinks. Jeffrey Lewis: "Ish is one of the most amazing and unique artists I know, a true soul-singing star of the underground and unlike anything you've ever experienced!" Regina Spektor: "Ish Marquez is a unique and talented musician, and everyone should take the time to hear him live."

Congregation - http://www.myspace.com/congregationband

Congregation have lately been injecting the Blues and R&B genre with a heavy dose of class and soul. Benjamin Prosser (Slide Guitar, Bass drum) and Victoria Yeulet (Vocals, Leg Bells) play the kind of raw, slinky and seductive blues that have the power to restore one's faith in the genre. Victoria wails away with a voice that never fails to chill. '21st century Londoners Ben Prosser and Victoria Yeulet look like slightly disturbed depression-era rejects and make self-composed, clammy goth-a-billy. The blues have never lost their ability to inspire faith' The Mirror

Clemence Freshard - http://www.myspace.com/freschard

Clemence Freschard was born in Dijon, Burgundy. She met Andre Herman Düne in Paris in 2003 and recorded a few songs that he wrote for her. Then she went to New York, got herself an old electric guitar, worked on her English, and started writing her own material. Since 2004 she has lived in Berlin. Her first album was a mix of electronic and acoustic sounds. Her new album 'click click' was recorded with Leo Bear Creak and Stanley Brinks. 'Clemence Freshard takes you on a voyage where you're delighted by magnificent pearls of songs from her numerous EPs, covers & albums. Great songwriting with French accenting – Sonic Reducer'.
