Just to let ya know that i am goint to be on the front page of CDBABY.COM on monday 9th march. Please go and check it out!

Here is a review from chris at cdbaby -

"Imagine the weightless, anthemic quality of Coldplay combined with the earthiness and grit of Ray Lamontagne. OK. Now you’re primed for Gavin Thorpe, a UK folk/Britpop artist with an immediately endearing and emotive voice and a leaning towards lyrical melodicism. Whether exploring decimated emotional landscapes similar to Damien Rice or kicking out the bombastic, heart-on-sleeve jams ala David Gray, Gavin Thorpe keeps all connections open, to his soul, and to your heart. He has struck that difficult balance between brave self expression and sensible pop restraint."

I am busy at the moment writing and recording the next record. I will let you know when i put some new tracks here first!

Here is some info about what we are trying to achieve by setting up this music fund in memory of my dad.

Tony experienced first hand the power of music and the sense of belonging. His much loved father died suddenly when Tony was 13 years old. This left a massive void in his life that he sought to fill. His restless teenage years, and early twenties, were according to Tony, navigated successfully due to the fact that he was playing Bass professionally in a blues band that gave him huge self esteem, and a sense of belonging. They were fortunate enough to back the likes of the great blues artists Muddy Waters, and Howling Wolf.

Tony's passion for life, music and helping others, will live on through the Fund. We have lost a beloved Husband and Pops. He will live on always in our hearts, but having a purpose like this, means he will live on for others in a way that he would have wanted, had he been granted the time.
Together we had already taken the first tentative steps to realising our goal of music being accessible to even those who were perceived by society to be on the outside. We felt that the sense of belonging by being part of a group or band joined by a love of making music could be offered as an alternative to those who were searching for the "family" and self esteem that had been denied them. For some their search brought them into violent, knife carrying gangs. To our knowledge, no one had been murdered on the street by a musical instrument.

We both felt that fortune had smiled upon us, and we have 4 amazing sons. The opportunity that owning Westside Music Centres presented to put something back into the community was something that motivated us both.

My work with the Avon Fire & Rescue Service, and my background in tackling anti social behaviour guided our initial thoughts. In partnership with AFRS we were looking at using the Services Community Rooms to set up drop in jam sessions, where the talented musical firefighters, and other volunteer musicians would host the session. AFRS saw this as a great way to engage with the community, especially young people. Music crosses all social and cultural barriers, and for AFRS anything that achieved this, and potentially even exposed hard to reach groups to the opportunities of joining the Service as firefighters, was a cause that is wholeheartedly supported.
Instruments will be made available for those who have not been exposed to music in this way, or have no instrument of their own, to try out and find "their" instrument. From this we hope that bands and singers will emerge, and in turn more groups will form to offer the opportunity ever wider. This is still in its early stages, but the foundation stones have been laid and we are moving forward. Setting up the Fund in Tony's name will provide the financial assistance to move forward to increase the level of opportunity.
