Point Blank: Venice Is Sinking’s Georgia Theatre Fundraiser!
Calling
all lovers of independent music! This ‘Point Blank’ feature focuses the
spotlight on the chamber pop loveliness that is Venice Is Sinking. I’ll
explain everything in the podcast, but there’s some info below if you
want to read along too.
The Athens, GA band want to press their new album on vinyl and they
need your help to do it, but they’re not going to make a penny from its
sales, instead wanting to donate proceeds to a worthy cause. I’ll let
them explain..
“On the morning of June 19, 2009, the Georgia Theatre was very nearly
destroyed by a fire that gutted the whole building. It was a beautiful,
historic building that had just gone extensive renovations, and it was
an important landmark to the Athens music scene.
Obviously, we are emotionally (and financially) tied to the building
because we recorded our third album there, the one that we are raising
money for right here! Wilmot Greene, the owner of the Theatre, helped
finance this project, so we feel beholden to him. Details are still
very sketchy about rebuilding the Georgia Theatre and if it’s even
possible, but we want to do whatever we can.
We still want to make this record. In fact, we want to make it now
more than ever! It stands as a document of the wonderful acoustics of
an old building that will never be heard again. You can hear the
Theatre in our album. It’s as much a player on the recording as we are!
So, let’s consider this a fundraiser for the Theatre and not for us.
We’re not gonna make a penny off this. All of the rewards still stand,
and we’ll still make the album, but let’s try to go way over the 3000
bucks! Every cent of profit from this site will go toward the Wil, the
Georgia Theatre, and the staff who treated us with such kindness and
professionalism while we engaged in our experiment there. It’s not just
about the building; it’s about the jobs of the people who work there,
too.
We don’t know how much we can pull in or what kind of difference
these efforts will make, but we owe a lot to Wil and the Theatre. We
don’t even know if this is the appropriate response, but it’s what
feels right.
We’ll keep you updated with our efforts.
All the best,
Venice is Sinking”
So there you have it! Have a listen to the two gorgeous tracks on this Point Blank episode, Ryan’s Song and Okay, and if you’re in the mood for generosity then hop, skip and jump over to their Kickstarter project page to preorder and donate!

Insomnia Radio: Double Shots #30 – NorCal Roots
Today’s
Double Shot pinpoints two sets of musical roots spread out over a few
separate areas of Northern California, and is partially inspired by a
creative commons poem by Mill Valley, CA resident Peter Menkin.
Our
first featured artist, TRAVIS OBERG grew up in the town of Dinuba, a
farming community 30 miles south of Fresno. He now seems to operate
out of Santa Cruz, CA with his backing band “Saltwater Merchants”, and
his smooth vocals fall in the family tree lineage somewhere between
James Taylor and Glen Phillips.
Travis’ songs from his debut “Bloodlines” present an honest
viewpoint on the importance of remembering where you’ve been, looking
ahead to where you are going and the decisions that we make on this
journey.
His songs deal with life and loss, relationships, redemption, and
offer hope in this sometimes uncertain and difficult day we live in.
Music for Travis has always been about the ministry it allows; the
strange and powerful way it can connect with people from every walk of
life.
“Writing songs is a trip! I am thrownback each time a new song
arrives, like a surprise package in the mail. Songwriting is a
challenge that keeps me awake at night, longing for the expressions to
take on form and melody” – Travis
Our
second featured artist, WILL DERRYBERRY is based in the Bay Area of
California – San Ramon specifically. He crafts meditative and
ruminative songs laden with symbolic mystery, delivered on smooth yet
raspy ethereal vocals akin to introspective singers such as Mike
Mangione and Ray LaMontagne.
Like Travis, Will also has ministry based roots, more apparent in
his earlier material which focused on acoustic blues from a realistic
slant, and then alternative pop rock, his voice emerging stronger and
closer to his core as each album was released.
Will returned to his folk, and blues roots with the album release of
“Seven” in March 2008. Will admits, “I wanted to get back to writing
those tunes that came more naturally to me, where I could let it all
hang out, be vulnerable, and real. And, honestly, I wanted to make
music that I would promote and perform for years.”
“I know that there is power in the stories and confessions of an
honest lyric, as well, a melody that can take us to the place where our
heart lives, struggles, and endures. Sharing this kind of song is my
hope. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we want and even need these
kinds of songs because we have the innate desire to be connected with
each other in an honest and intimate way.” – Will

Insomnia Radio #165: Homecoming
May 27, 2009
Written by Jason Evangelho

Hey gang! I can’t accurately express the myriad of feelings
(including anxiety & excitement) I experienced leading up to this
episode, nor the overwhelming sense of completion and contentedness
when it was finished. Over the past 18 months my life has run the gamut
of changes, but Insomnia Radio has soldiered forward thanks to Charles,
Stuart, and the rest of the gang. Because of them, I’m able to grab the
mic once again and rock the music I love for the world.
I had aspirations to record a gigantic, super-produced episode that
would be a marathon of awesomeness, but instead I’ve opted to stay the
course and serve up some killer indie music with my trademarked
non-professional rambling in between
One more thing to mention: This ain’t no guest hosting gig Now kick back and enjoy the show…

Miss Morrison’s Mixtape #1
May 22, 2009
Written by Stuart Morrison

Sarah Morrison brings you Miss Morrison’s Mixtape #1, a song from every independent artist and band reviewed on Miss Morrison’s Mix
for Insomnia Radio. Most of these tracks were IR Daily Doses and
they’re all completely free and legal, so make copies, burn CDs, share
with your friends and spread the music around! And don’t forget to show
the artists some love!
They are giving away free music after all, so if you like a song let
them know - drop them a message, buy a CD or a tshirt, go to a show,
just let them know they’ve got a new fan. Because we all know music
tastes better when it’s free, but musicians still have to eat!

Insomnia Radio #164: Home Fires
May 10, 2009
Written by Charles Stepczyk

Today’s
episode warms us up a bit with a healthy dose of rock from UK, Canada,
New York, Mexico City (and beyond) before our founder, Jason Evangelho
takes over the controls for IR #165.
The name of this episode has double meaning for me personally as I’m
planning on destroying most of my home CD collection in the near future
and backing them all up digitally. It also has something to do with
putting forth our best effort to keep the musical fire burning since
Jason’s short hiatus from the network.
Anyway, please enjoy the tracks that I’ve put together for this
episode and help support these great musicians. More on the way shortly!

Insomnia Radio #163: Hey Juice! Today’s episode starts off with a little CB chatter from a cat in New Jersey talking to his homeboy Juice in Northern California - then launches into a standout intro track by the funk and soul powerhouse, T Bird & The Breaks from Austin, Texas. The show today follows no rhyme of reason and the tracks were put together as the juices flowed forward, the program progressively taking on a life of its own - my favorite way to do things creatively. Insomnia Radio #162 - From A to Z From the beautifully crafted Pop/Rock of Brooklyn-based Aaron Zimmer to the Outlaw Rock Style of Zen Thesis from the Great American West. For this episode we stay mainly in the United States, venturing North of the Border to Canada a couple of times, thence to the UK, and a short side trip to mainland Europe, to two countries not renowned for their Indie Music Scenes. All this music was submitted to Insomnia Radio in the last few weeks, so thanks to the Artists, their Managements, Labels and PR Companies for sending it for you the listeners to enjoy.

Insomnia Radio #161 - Bursting at the Seams February 11, 2009 No, we didn’t win the mustard yellow belt this past year, but we accumulated so many tracks last year and through the first few weeks of 2009, we’ve felt over-gorged on music and wanted to start sharing some with you while we recover from this champion binge session. The format of today’s show is slightly different in the sense there are no themes really - just a bit of dialogue, and some great musical incentive to down your 161 hot dogs to. Insomnia Radio Mixtape: Injection February 8, 2009 One from the Archive. Originally posted by Jason on Thu, 10 Aug 2006 and recently rediscovered. We don’t have a playlist for this, so if anyone knows any of the bands/tracks please add to the comments. Below are Jason’s notes at the time. I don’t think many of in the Northern Hemisphere will be mowing our lawns any time soon, but the other suggestions stand: “We’re really enjoying our mixtapes lately, can ya tell? On the table for you to spin: A 45 minute injection of the hard rock magic. Keep this one around. Burn it for a friend. Crank it in the car, mowing the lawn, running through your neighborhood. 13 tracks that grab you by the throat and don’t let go. Turn it up gang.” Download
