Hi

so, christmas is coming but there's still time to get that last minute copy of merry6mas, bootleg#3 or some back catalogue from Yellow6....

also available free to download is the Silber records christmas compilation - get it here (and maybe buy some lovely CDs while you're there)

here's what Silber have to say about it:

What’s there to say about this compilation? Old friends & new friends doing mainly original compositions & mainly instrumental pieces. An artist roster of Aarktica, Small Cities, Charles Atlas, Andrew Weathers, This Quiet Army, Electric Bird Noise, Lullabier, Bryce Eiman, Polar400, Miss Massive Snowflake, Gorgons, Origami Galaktika, Remora, Lozninger, Fornever, Moodring, Subscape Annex, Carta, Small Life Form, Zanzibar Snails, Moral Crayfish, Northern Valentine, Medit, & Yellow 6. So a solid representation from the Silber roster, the 919Noise scene, all our old friends, & some folks we’ve just met. I hope you dig it all & maybe find a new favorite band or two. Personally I’m pretty pleased at how it simultaneously goes all over the musical map & remains cohesive. Noise, beats, slowcore, found sounds, guitar walls, & occasionally things that could pass for rock & roll.

that's about all for now.... October Man will soon release a 2xcdr of live material recorded at Union Chapel (London) and Cafe Video (Gent) in October this year, the new album is taking shape and should appear in the spring followed by other releases later in the year, including 'close/r', a project with 3 chords and lots of players, and collaborations with Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning) as 'Sleep Of Reason', and Eric Quatch (Thisquietarmy) recorded in Montreal in March 2009 and currently being edited, and last but not least, a collaboration with Larkian in progress.

just to finish, below is a list of some of my favourite musical things of the year

DURING THE WRITING OF THE SCREENPLAY, NICLAZ HAD BEEN LISTENING TO 'TELESCOPE PEAK', A TRACK FROM THE 2001 YELLOW6 ALBUM 'MUSIC FOR PLEASURE'. OVER A FEW WEEKS OVER AN HOUR OF NEW MUSIC WAS RECORDED FOR CONSIDERATION FOR THE FILM, MOST OF WHICH IS INCLUDED HERE. AFTER MANY EDITS, THE FILM WAS COMPLETED CONTAINING ONLY THE ORIGINAL TELESCOPE PEAK, AND PLEASURE/PAIN (FROM PAINTED SKY).

THE PIECES HERE ARE THOSE THAT WERE INSPIRED BY THE FILM AND STAND ON THEIR OWN, MOSTLY WITH FURTHER TRACKING/MIXING ADDED. ALSO INCLUDED IS A RE-RECORDING OF TELESCOPE PEAK. THE FILM 9732 WILL BE RELEASED DURING 2010.

hi

i hope you are all enjoying autumn/fall.... here in Leicestershire most of the leaves are off the trees and there are fireworks going off all around this evening.

so... to the news.  firstly, i would like to thank everyone who came to the gigs in France and Belgium.  I really enjoyed the trip which included 5 gigs and a radio session in 5 days with sets between 35 and 90 minutes long.

the radio session for the wonderful Dr Adams is available to listen to online here:  http://www.radioscarpesensee.com/crbst_35.html  the Y6 session is about half way through.  The sound isn't perfect in places as i overloaded the mixing desk a little, but it includes a couple of songs from 'When The Leaves Fall Like Snow' along with some of the material in progress for the new album.  the show in Gent was also recorded and may appear on line soon....

On the subject of upcoming music releases... there's lots in progress and most of that will appear next year, but something before the decade is out....

MERRY6MAS2009 : after some possibility that the series would end with last years 6masBox, here it is again.  This years CDr will be available late November/early December and includes music written for the film 9732 by Swedish film maker Niclaz Erlingmark (www.elenziah.com).  For various reasons, the music i wrote specifically for the film didn't get used in the soundtrack, but old tracks 'pleasure/pain' and 'telescope peak' did.  The music is still good tho i think so is included here, along with a couple of other things that won't find a home elsewhere.
more news on that in a few weeks.....

LIVE AT UNION CHAPEL : the Yellow6 set from the recent Union Chapel / Arctic Circle Daylight Music session, featuring the songs 'close', 'if you see something say something', and 'cut' will be released in some form by October Man.  Again, more details soon.

and for next year:

Album 1 - the new Y6 album for which there are currently 11 songs in progress - not all of them will make the album as that's enough for a double
Album 2 - Close/R.  this is an album built around 3 chords repeated throughout, while other things come and go in the mix.  With contributions so far from David Newlyn/Caught In The Wake Forever/Konntinent/Portal/Stafraenn Hakon and others to come this is a hypnotic/relaxing journey to be taken in number of sections that all merge into one.

(not sure how/where they will appear yet....currently investigating options for releasing them)

Also a few ongoing collaborations will see the light....

that's it for now... more soon

jon.

Work is progressing on the new Yellow6 album with the working title 'The Calm After The Storm'.  I'm currently looking into options for something a bit more interesting than a jewel case for packaging (not an easy task in the UK for short run cds).  Also, work is progressing on the other upcoming release 'Close/r'.  both of these will most likely be released early 2010 preceded by merry6mas... news on that soon, but it will include material written and recorded for the film 9732

cheers
jon.

Hi
Andy Nice plays the cello. He played on the Tindersticks 'Hungry Saw' album and has a solo album out on Front&Follow.
Why do I tell you this? Because, aside from Secrets of Me being a very fine album, I, along with Isnaj Dui, Elite Barbarian and Sone Institute, have remixed a track from the album.
A mix by Andy Nice is broadcast on Arctic circle radio next Tuesday (25th August), and on that same day the remix EP is available for free download.
All the links you need are below.
Enjoy
Jon.
Hi guys,
Andy's mix on Arctic Circle radio will be available on Tuesday (not sure what time) - you can direct people to
This will also be the day that the remix ep is available for download from

www.jointhecircle.net/radio and its on iTunes of course.www.jointhecircle.net/andy.
Front and Follow -

Remix update
Monday, August 24, 2009

Category: Music
hi
updates have been sparse of late, so here is one packed with some fact and some sketchy details of forthcoming things (ok, not quite a frenzy but all things are relative).

I have been busy with new recordings, including studio recordings of some new material played at live shows in the past 6 months or so.  This is the first time i've played material live before recording it so a new thing for me.  I have about 2 hours of material so will release a full CD album, most likely limited to 300 or so copies, plus maybe something else....
as an off-shoot of this, i have asked a number of friends to contribute to a piece created from three simple but lovely chords that i recorded.  this will most likely be a release in it's own right in one form or another.

I have also recently remixed Andy Nice.  his album is out now on Front&Follow.  Arctic Circle Radio will broadcast and Andy Nice mix on Aug 18th and include details of how to download the remix ep free.
go to www.jointhecircle.net/radio for podcast details, and http://www.frontandfollow.com/ for Andy Nice release info

Unfortunately the planned trip to the USA in November won't be happening for reasons beyond my control.

Forthcoming Releases:

no dates for these as yet, but at some point in the future these will be coming:

Yellow6 CD album (Autumn/Winter 2009)
Close (collaboration with 3 chords and many players)
merry6mas2009 (the series continues)

Remix:  i have remixed a track form the album by Andy Nice.  Check out the original on Front&Follow.

Collaborations ongoing - output expected:
Larkian / Yellow6 (release on Dead Vox - 3 tracks completed)
thisquietarmy / Yellow6 (improvised recordings, March 2009, Montreal - to be mixed / edited)
3 volume vinyl collaboration with Dirk Serries (Fear Falls Burning)... project formerly known as 'iamstringsthatrembleunderabow' is now know as Sleep of Reason.  Equation records will release a limited 3 volume vinyl set in limited edition of 100 copies.  Details to be confirmed.  Volume 1 is recorded, others to follow

With great sadness i regret that the planned collaboration with Dima T Pilot never reached fruition due to his untimely death in May 2009 at the age of 29.  I recommend you check out his work as Bosch's With you and Light under Water.
With more sadness, Danielle Baquet-Long also passed away too soon in July at the age of 26.  I recommend her work as Celer (with husband Will), and her solo work as Chubby Wolf.
Both leave a lasting legacy of work as a reminder of the fragility of this existence and importance of making the most of our time on this earth.

that's all for now...more updates when there's something to tell

random thoughts that have been entering my head recently which i will share with anyone who may be reading... not that i think anyone is these days.  the only comments i've had in response to my blogs in the last 6 months were those to do with my write up on the Magazine gig!  not that i'm looliking for validation of my existence thru knowing pepe are reading... maybe that's what some of the other thoughts are about???

a few things have given me cause to reflect lately.... firstly two people who i had never met, but knew a little through myspace, died suddenly at very young ages (over 15 years younger than me!).  true, i didn't know them personally, but had made some sort of connection with them thru theirs and my music making.  that gives cause to reflect on life itself and it's fragility and transient nature.

along with that, in the changing world of recession and dying music industry, i start to wonder, when labels are closing down, bands reducing the number of copies of releases, or resorting to downloads rather than physical releases.... are there anough people interested to justify a new yellow6 cd... and what can i do to encourage those few to buy a copy rather than steal the files?

luckily i don't do this for money otherwise i would've quit long ago (about 20 yrs ago!) but i guess i'm old fashioned.... i like the idea of a physical copy of an album, i'm happy to pay the artist for their music (yes, and the record label for doing their bit too)... maybe as i'm happy to, i can't understand why other people would expect to get it for free.  i know it's all been said many times before, but i wouldn't expect to get electricity, water, guitar strings, food, petrol, cat food, tv, telephone, internet and so many other things for nothing (nice tho it would be).  i wouldn't expect a painter to give me their canvas (or printed reproduction) for nothing... just because you can, doesn't make it right.  music should be valued (of course, the value is down to the listener and of course different music has different perceived value)

the artists who do need to earn money from their art will dwindle... some will find new ways, but the days of bands being picked up for their talents and then earning a living from it are pretty much gone....

so what was my point?  not sure - just rambling to myself i guess... i most likely will release another CD this year, then who knows... without a physical release it doesn't seem real - the process of putting together the music into a package is something i enjoy doing, and seeing the end product.  a folder of data files does nothing for me

ho hum... back to reflecting in private, and listening to mixes and things...
