Dozens of acts, several stages beckon at first Seattle cabaret festivalThe Emerald City hosts its first Seattle International Cabaret Festival. By Michael Upchurch Seattle Times arts writer BRUCE DUGDALE
The Castaways, the house troupe at the Can Can nightclub, will be part of the festivities. Cabaret: Seattle International Cabaret FestivalVarying times Wednesday-Sunday at ACT Theatre, 700 Union St., Seattle; Can Can, 94 Pike St., Seattle; Pensione Nichols, 1923 First Ave., Seattle; and the Triple Door, 216 Union St., Seattle; $99 for 5-day pass, prices vary for individual events (206-652-0832 or www.cabaretfestival.com). "Come to the cabaret," the song goes.
But what if there are three or four cabarets to choose from?
That's the case with the inaugural Seattle International Cabaret Festival which, after kicking off with the Tiger Lillies at the Moore last week, resumes on Wednesday with dozens of acts performing at four venues. It's the brainchild of Chris Snell, Can Can's artistic director and a longtime live-entertainment producer ("anything from opera to punk rock," he says). His aim, he explains, is to provide a showcase for "the more avant-garde side of cabaret," especially in music and physical performance.

STARTING THIS WEEKEND: CABARET FESTIVAL
By Samantha Mastridge November 5th, 2009
Tomorrow night kicks off Seattle's first annual Cabaret Festival, presented by the Can Can and hosted all over the place: shows will be at the Moore, the Triple Door, and Act Theatre. As far as I can tell, everyone even sort of cabaret-y is going to be involved - The Tiger Lillies, Circus Contraption Band, Orkester Zirconium, even Emerald City Soul Club is getting in on the show. Performance art and drag and comedy and something for pretty much everyone. We recommend any of it, but particularly Scarlet Room with Vagabond Opera on Wednesday at the Triple Door. There are two shows: one at 7:00 all ages, and one at 10:00 21+. I particularly enjoy the description of Vagabond Opera: "Weaving elements of Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, and Edith Piaf with absurdist flair, theatrics, and an old world mood, Vagabond Opera presents the new wave of opera - lusty voices singing in 13 languages and presenting a cabaret of rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence, all played with exuberance, skill and a gritty Vagabond edge." We've talked about Scarlet Room here before, but the last time they played the Triple Door Bonnie Vie had this to say about them: "The Band is like a fantastic mechanical doll; churning out a whirl of circus and cabaret melodies, with a stage presence that is larger than life. With dark music-box-style keys, Aleksandra Weil - the group's vocalist and pianist - weaves elaborate stories, written by Scarlet Room's drummer, Eloise Govedare." The Triple Door is probably the perfect place for the spell of all this dark swirling cabaret. You probably don't want to miss it. Life is a cabaret, old chum — and the brand new Seattle International Cabaret Festival is a celebration of that flamboyant, democratic, physical, musical, spectacular artform and the culture that surrounds it. Taking place at various venues throughout downtown Seattle from November 6 - 15, SICF pays homage to the genre’s storied roots but focuses on contemporary performances by artists from around the globe. “We hope that the festival will define for the public what the look and sound of cabaret has evolved into and why it continues to be relevant to the art and entertainment world,” says producer Chris Snell. Snell, whose Can Can Presents production company has been recognized by such media heavy hitters as the Wall Street Journal and the BBC for its creation, development and management of unconventional music and physical performance acts, is a staunch supporter of the re-energized genre. “Cabaret is a necessary support to the arts because it has always been a style and venue that encourages freedom of expression and therefore it’s a sanctuary for artists — particularly those who are unestablished or without privilege,” he continues. “We hope that broadening an awareness of cabaret will further open the space available for artists to express themselves, as well as provide opportunity for art from many different walks to be appreciated. SCIF will open Friday, November 6 with a performance by British “Brechtian punk cabaret” outfit Tiger Lillies with physical, musical and visual performances as well as DJ dance parties continuing through Sunday, November 15. Confirmed performers include the Can Can’s Castaways, Ultra, Waxie Moon, Queen Schmooquan, The Bad Things, the World Premier of "The Breaking" Cabaret Opera, Vagabond Opera (Portland), Kitten On The Keys (San Francisco) and Peculiar Pretzelman (Los Angeles). DJs include KEXP’s Derek Mazzone, Emerald City Soul Club, I Love Shiva and Switzerland’s Gypsy Sound System. A full listing of confirmed acts will be confirmed shortly. SICF is presented in association with The Moore Theater, The Showbox, The Triple Door, ACT Theater, Pensione Nichols and Can Can. Sponsors Seattle Theatre Group.

By Birdie Bonnie-Vie.net July 22, 2009 I mentioned I’d had the chance to go to the Triple Door for the Scarlet Room + Vagabond Opera show and take photos. The entire night sang of the twisted and sweet, with a hint of Old World cabaret…
The band is like a fantastic mechanical doll; churning out a whirl of circus and cabaret melodies, with a stage presence that is larger than life. With dark music-box-style keys, Alexsandra Weil - the group’s vocalist and pianist - weaves elaborate stories, written by Scarlet Room’s drummer, Eloise Govedare.
Aleksandra is a sight to behold on stage. Long dark hair swinging, it’s apparent how passionate she is about the music. Eloise shines from the back of the low-lit stage. Never missing a beat or breaking a sweat, her drums patter through like a quickened heartbeat…
Guitarists Michael Muir and Kris Darr are the perfect compliment to Aleksandra’s keys and connect the dots of Eloise’s beats. Their sound fills the cracks and crevices between elaborately complex lyrics, and begs the audience to listen a little closer.
While their melodies float from heavy riffs to lighter strings, each word floats through the crowd like a puff of smoke - evoking images of their signature cabaret-rock-musical style.
The entire effect makes the listener feel as if they’ve possibly just fallen through the looking glass… that deck of cards could spring to life and march right out the door; this painting is definitely watching you as you cross the room.
Scarlet Room was the perfect compliment to Vagabond Opera’s Bohemian “Old World Yiddish” gypsy theatrics. In the decadent setting of the Triple Door, this show was a night of hanging melodies and dark, eclectic, cabaret fun.

In the last few years there has been a slew of bands who've take on the moniker of "punk cabaret". While the term cabaret is generally fitting the usage of the word "punk" is misleading at best. Most of those artists have little or no rock influence, much less punk. It's as if "rock" is a bad word, something they choose to distance themselves from. Not so with Seattle's Scarlet Room. As you can hear on their new EP (and first CD) they are proud to marry cabaret to their foundations in rock. Cabaret rock? Cabarock?
Forget the terminology, these four young, talented musicians are canny enough to see the commonalities between rock and music theatre. Both have frequently explored the darker corners of life, you can hear it in the works of the Doors or performances like "Sweeney Todd". Both rock and musical theatre aren't afraid to be bombastic in the best sense of the word. Both can be grandiose and still be compelling. Scarlet Room are wise enough to realize that rock is epic theatre. That there's nothing contrary about combining rock with cabaret. It's not contradictory, as heard on this CD, it may be compulsory.
Lyricist and drummer Eloise Govedare knows how to evoke a stage setting. Of the six songs found on this EP four of them reference performances or performance locations. You've got the movie set of "Lights! Camera! Action!", the courtroom of "Ladies and Gentlemen of the Cold Blooded Jury", and the puppet pageant of "Marionette". I'm not sure why the circus and sideshows have become such a metaphor for the dark underbelly of America (especially to generations that have grown up without traveling seedy shows) but Scarlet Room conjures the claustrophobic roller coaster of the decaying big top nicely on "Welcome to the Musical Circus".
Govedare's talent as a lyricist is on display with the song "Marionette". Anybody could write Pinocchio with a female protagonist. Govedare isn't just interested in a toy who wants to be "real". It's the WHY they want to be real that excites her. Pinocchio wanted to be real so that he could be loved and belong. The heroine of "Marionette" doesn't want to be real just so she can run back to the arms of her "Father" she longs to be free. She wants to be untethered and unrestrained. She wants to be more than a puppet and more than a child.
Vocalist Aleksandra Weil is the group's central attraction. She (like Govedare) is a classically trained pianist and her skill and talent shine on each song. Vocally she's also the show's acrobat. When you listen to her sing your head will duck and twist trying to keep up with her. It's beautiful.
It's the boys in the band (guitarist Robert Reis and bassist Kris Darr) that provide the ROCK. They bring a meatiness to the songs where the threat and thunder of electric guitars counterpoint the piano and vocals nicely. The guys aren't all force and volume. There are nice moments of subtlety in their performances as you can hear on "Marionette" with its has a lovely guitar sound reminiscent of the Doors' Robby Krieger.
It's good for a band to have diverse influences but that doesn't mean the concept always works. Have no fear, it works amazingly well here. Scarlet Room have perfected a unified sound. This is not x meets y, it is not cabaret meets rock. It's cabaretrock. The chemical wedding is complete. This EP is well worth your time and attention. It can stand up to any of the neo-cabaret recordings release in the last decade.

Extra special thanks to Fuschia Foxxx, and Rainbow, Ben, and John from the Castaways for making the show something really special! Big ups to Can Can Chris for letting us "borrow" them all for the night, and showing up to boot! A few quick, final shoutouts: Ivan for making our fantastic banner - alas, gravity was not with us. The Govedare and Weil clans for all your continued support. Brent for all his hard work on the booking & promotion. Doug and Wendy, who came all the way from Hawaii!
