ARLINGTON, Texas - A historic year in which he became the first bowler to win three consecutive Professional Bowlers Association major championships has landed Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., a berth at the head of the 2008 class of U.S. Bowler All-Americans.

Duke, who went to the bank with a PBA-best $229,350 in earnings, won the Denny's PBA World Championship in Indianapolis in February, the Denny's U.S. Open in North Brunswick, N.J., in March, and the PBA World Championship in Wichita, Kan., in October. Ironically he started the year in an injury-riddled slump that put him on the brink of losing his exemption to bowl on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour during the 2008-09 season.

For the calendar year, however, Duke's performance was unmatched as he earned honorary captain honors as leading vote-getter on the men's All-America squad. It was his eighth berth on the All-America first team, and his first as captain.

Joining Duke on the men's All-America team are: two-time PBA champions in 2008 Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas; Wes Malott, Argyle, Texas; Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas; and Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla. Malott and Scroggins earned their first All-America berths; Williams extended his record to 17 years on the elite squad.

U.S. Bowler, the official membership publication of the United States Bowling Congress, also recognizes five women and five senior All-Americans.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, was women's honorary captain in landing her 11th career All-America berth. She had top three finishes in the U.S. Women's Open and three PBA Women's Series events, including a victory in the Cheetah Championship in Cheektowaga, N.Y. Joining her on the women's All-America team were Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; USBC Queens and Bowling's Clash of Champions winner Lynda Barnes, Double Oak, Texas; two-time PBA Women's Series champ Michelle Feldman, Auburn, N.Y.; and Diandra Asbaty, Chicago, and Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J., who tied for the fifth spot.

Tom Baker of King, N.C., who has dominated the PBA Senior Tour since turning 50, made the Senior All-America squad for the fourth consecutive year, but his three-year run as honorary captain was ended by Senior Tour rookie Wayne Webb of Sacramento, Calif. Webb's victory in the Senior U.S. Open helped him top the PBA Senior Tour in earnings despite a limited schedule of six events. He topped veteran Johnny Petraglia of Jackson, N.J., in the Senior All-America voting with Baker third, newcomer Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., the 2008 USBC Senior Masters champion, fourth and another Senior Tour rookie, Brian Brazeau of Ocala, Fla., claiming the fifth Senior All-America berth.

The U.S. Bowler All-America teams are selected in voting by a national panel of bowling journalists and USBC association leaders. Each All-American will be presented with a customized crystal trophy.

RENO, Nev. - Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., and Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., are Hall of Fame caliber players near the top of their games as individual bowlers. At the National Bowling Stadium on Tuesday, Duke and Johnson combined to form a solid doubles team, qualifying as the No. 1 seed for Sunday's final round of the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship on the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.

"It was a very exciting event and a race for position all night," Duke said. "It was hard to pull away but Liz and I came away with the top seed for the TV show."

The finals will be taped for broadcast on Sunday at approximately 1 p.m. Pacific at the National Bowling Stadium to air on ESPN Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern, marking the first time a PBA Tour Mixed Doubles event has ever been televised.

"You can't ask for a better partner than Norm Duke," Johnson said. "All night long, I just tried to give him a look. I feel very fortunate to be leading this great event with Norm."

Duke and Johnson advanced to the top spot on the strength of a 12-4 record in match play to claim the top position for Sunday's televised finals. Sean Rash and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard qualified in second position. In third position was the team of Steve Harman and Jennifer Petrick. The fourth-seeded Tom Hess and Laura Hardeman with fifth-seeded Brad Angelo and Shannon Pluhowsky round out the field.

Sixty-four players from the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour and 32 players from the PBA Women's Series (16 PBA Women's Series Exempt Players plus 16 of the next highest qualifiers from the PBA Women's Series Tour Trials) each bowled 14 qualifying games at the National Bowling Stadium. The top 16 from each group were combined to form 16 mixed doubles teams which advanced to match play.

After match play, the top five doubles finalists advanced to stepladder competition. No. 5 qualifiers Angelo/Pluhowsky will face No. 4 seeded Hess/Hardeman. The winners will face No. 3 team
Harman/ Petrick. The winner of that match will face No. 2 qualifiers Rash/Dorin-Ballard, with the winner of that match to face No. 1 seeded Duke/Johnson in the championship match.

Bowling industry offers to help President-Elect Obama 'strike' change at the White House lane

As the soon-to-be 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama has promised to bring change to Capitol Hill and the nation - from taxation and healthcare reform to the potential replacement of the White House bowling lane with a basketball court!

Fortunately, to the delight of the bowling industry and the more than 67.2 million bowlers throughout the nation, the President-Elect flexed his diplomatic skills by deciding to add basketball hoops while still keeping the White House Lane. In fact, during his recent interview on 20/20 with Barbara Walters, the President-Elect indicated that he may spend some time practicing his bowling game.

Applauding the President-Elect for embracing the great sport of bowling, the leading organizations in the bowling industry are teaming together to help usher in a different kind of change on Capitol Hill - proposing a much-needed "makeover" of the White House Lane that would bring it to the modern 21st century bowling experience.

"Forty years ago, President Nixon made national headlines when he revamped the White House Lane that had first been introduced by Harry Truman. After four decades, it's fair to say that the lane at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is long overdue for a facelift," said Jeff Boje, president of the United States Bowling Congress.

"The bowling industry applauds President-Elect Obama for keeping the White House Lane. As a gesture of support and appreciation, we are offering to give the lane a much-needed enhancement and add in all the great amenities that have helped to fuel the continued popularity of bowling and maintain its status as the nation's No. 1 participatory sport and a great American family activity."

In an incredible display of non-partisan collaboration that would make any politician blush, the leading organizations within the bowling industry are joining forces to offer to bring the White House Lane to the digital era. The enhanced ultra-modern lane would include a completely new technology surface, cutting-edge bowling balls, a top-of-the-line high definition scoring system and light display, a digital stereo sound system, club seating, Bowlopolis kids digital graphics and modern electronic bumpers (perfect to help both the President-Elect and his children adopt proper bowling technique).

"Our goal is to provide the President-Elect and his family with the modern day bowling experience. We're focused on completely refurbishing the White House Lane - no pin will be left behind," said Jim Sturm, president of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America. "In a sign of solidarity that should give inspiration to politicians on both sides of the aisle, the leading organizations within our industry have formed a 'coalition task force' to help enact a different kind of positive change on Capitol Hill."

The bowling organizations that have teamed together to offer to revamp the White House Lane include the USBC, BPAA, Professional Bowlers' Association, The National Bowling Association and the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association.
