So it's winter break, and as much as I enjoy the time off, it's in my
best interest to use that spare time to make art. Trust me, it's hard
to avoid the temptations of videogames, novels, and epic hours of
sleep. But here are some updates on upcoming events, etc.
In Portland, the first Friday of every month consists of The Art Walk.
Galleries are open late, music can be heard everywhere, and a lot of
the students at MECA sell their art. In general, it's mad amounts of
craziness and entertainment. For me, the past two Art Walks (November
and December) were dedicated to my Performance Art class. In November
we has a bake sale, but of course it was nothing ordinary. I mean...
we're a Performance Art class, it was almost an unspoken requirement
that we make this an incredibly creative bake sale.... thus, everyone
dressed up in the most ridiculous getup, trotted along the crowded
streets with tambourines and a muffin-filled cart in tow. With my
handmade cardboard crow mask, corset and petticoats... I made a few
friends by simply cawing and preening the hair of strangers. I was told
my crow impression was delightful... though I did make one child cry.
On the Art Walk in December we had our show at the
Two Point Gallery. I can't tell you much of what happened, as I was half blind during my performance which lasted hours. The turn out was amazing, at one point there was even a line to get into the space. For all that hard work... I have to say it was completely worth it. I'm incredibly thankful for that opportunity, it was a great experience. I'm waiting on a video of my performance which another student is generously making for me. For now, here's a little sample:
If you missed these a few of my illustration/paintings are going to be shown (and hopefully sold!) at the Sidework Art Show at the Old Port Sea Grill. It's the 21st, this coming Monday. I hope you stop by and take a look at some art by some Portland area artists.
