I haven't heard an entire T.I. album since I'm Serious but I wasn't gonna miss his 6 album, Paper Trail.  I really wanted to know what's been on T.I.'s mind since all of his legal problems, so I put the cd in and pressed play.  He defiantly knows what he's doing because he immediately hooks you with the intro.  He spits crazy for like 3 minutes straight.  And he mentions Tupac which is always a plus with me.  But T.I. is really being a man about it and owning up to his mistakes and explaining his actions.  He felt he had no other choice but to act in the manor he did. And who are we to say what he should have done in that situation cuz like he said on the album, "If you haven't walked a mile in my shoes…you haven't survived the sh*t I've survived…you can't judge me." "You can't expect me to think like you cuz my life ain't like yours."  And that is the truth if I've ever heard it.  He loves his family and would do anything to protect them, so with that being said, let's get back to the music.

..

T.I. is clearly saying whatever is on his mind with this album.  He's showing and proving that he is the king of this southern rap game and no one is going to take his crown.  My favorite tracks are "Whatever You Like" and "Swagga Like Us" which features Kanye, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne.  How can you go wrong with these heavy hitters on one song?!  And I believe the video he shot for "Whatever You Like" is his best one yet.  Another hot track is "My Life Your Entertainment" featuring Usher.  Not only does T.I. snap on this one but so does Usher!  He must have been feelin' the title too.  The album also includes John Legend on "Slide Show", Ludacris on "On Top Of The World", and Rihanna on "Live Your Life" which is tearing up the airways as you read this.  With this track he reminds us to be thankful for the things we do have and stop worrying about what we don't have.

Overall it's a very good album.  He has much respect for Tupac which causes me to be an even bigger fan of T.I.'s.  He's a father, a son, a significant other, and a man that doesn't sugar coat anything.  If he messed up he's going to admit to it.  If he feels someone did him wrong he's going to let them know.  He gives back to his community and takes care of his kids. Paper Trail will go down in history.  This is actually one artist that I bet Tupac wouldn't mind being compared to.

Trina's latest studio creation is titled Still Da Baddest.  Trina seems to be a real cool chick….but her music…..ummm no.  Materialistic, hood, raunchy and parental advisory are perfect descriptions of this album. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that this album would be different from her passed projects.  This is her 4th CD, she's 29, and she's had a couple of serious relationships…so I was expecting a more grown up Trina…but I guess this is just who she is musically.  I do like a few tracks on this CD, like "Single Again" and "I Got a Thang For You", which she did with Keyshia Cole.  But the rest of it….I mean, ok Trina, we know you think you're the baddest b*tch.  We know you have a big butt.  We know you like to have sex ( who doesn't).  But do you have to repeat these things over and over and over through the WHOLE album, WE GET IT, TRUST ME.  Is there nothing else to talk about in her world?  She has talent, pretty as she want to be, and living in one of the most popular cities in the U.S.!  What happened to being a lady?!  I read an article on her once and she was saying how she didn't want to be looked at like a sex object any longer.  Uh, Ok??  And don't get me wrong, Trina seems to carry herself pretty well, but when she's in the studio she apparently has a one track mind. All though, I have to give her credit for track 11.  "Phone Sexx" is one of the sexiest songs I've heard in a while, she did her thing with that one.  I just can't wrap my ears around the rest.  I mean, I like (love) the things she's rapping about probably a lil more than the next chick but Trina is off the chain with it!  She makes me blush, and that ain't easy.  I like Trina so I'll still keep hope alive for the next album.  Until then I'll just keep tracks 4, 6, and 11 on repeat.

I'm out like VCRs yall!

…On Alicia Keys that is.  I didn't think I would care too much for her latest creation, As I Am, but damn was I wrong (which never happens of course).  I love Alicia but I wasn't in a hurry to hear the album because of the two singles she had released, "No One" and "Like You'll Never See Me Again".  They were ok, they just weren't as good as singles passed.  On a number of interviews she was telling the world how she had to go off to a far away land to do some soul searching and get some much deserved rest.  I was like OH LORD, ain't no telling what this CD gone sound like, but she has made another collection worthy album.

Jazzy, soulful and grown are all words that came to mind when I finished playing As I Am.

Alicia puts her heart into every note she sings, she was made for this.  She lets you know she's a superwoman in the song…..well….."Superwoman".  Can't argue with that!

When it comes to our loved ones she begs us to take advantage of every moment with songs like "Like You'll Never See Me Again" and "Tell You Something".  She admits she was burned by love but she takes it as a "Lesson Learned".  That song really touches my heart.  She longs for a spontaneous, "Wreckless Love" in track 7 and recalls a "Teenage Love Affair" in 9.  Alicia allows us to see deep into her soul through the song "Prelude To A Kiss".  She's telling us how being an entertainer can definitely be challenging at times and she wants to make it to heaven so she kindly and soulfully asks God to send her an angel.  This track is only 2+ minutes long but one of the most powerful.  Probably because it's more of a prayer than a song.

I love Alicia Keys.  She's real, truly talented, and carries herself with dignity and confidence.  She doesn't curse, talk nasty, or claims she's the baddest b**ch on her records.  She's a lady.  Our generation should be thankful to have her…. I know I am....but don't take my word for it, what do I know?

I'm out!

Well……what can I say to let you all know what Tupac means to me?  He was a poet, rapper, actor, activist, and I believe he was lost.  He was a son, a brother, a friend and he loved his black people.  Go get your tea and a blanket, sit back, and let me tell you a lil  story.

June 16, 1971, the world was introduced to a son that was apparently named Lesane Crooks at birth but was later named Tupac Amaru Shakur.  His mother was a part of the Black Panther Party and was released from jail shortly before she gave birth.  Tupac's natural father isn't publicly known but his stepfather is, political prisoner, Mutulu Shakur.  Mutulu went to prison in '86 which left Tupac fatherless once again.  Life wasn't to kind to his mother and eventually she ended up with an addiction problem.  But that didn't stop Tupac from loving her.  She taught him the good and the bad.  And made the best life she could for her and her two kids.  They moved from N.Y. to Baltimore, which didn't make sense to Pac.  Why would they move to a place with a high crime rate, high teen pregnancy AND it was drug infested?  He was puzzled but he wanted to make a difference.  Baltimore turned out not to be so bad after all.  He was able to go to a performing arts school where he met Jada.  Jada Pinkett Smith, that is.  Jada was his heart.  He even wrote a couple of poems about her which are displayed in his book of poetry, The Rose That Grew From Concrete.  I'm jealous.

As a teenager Tupac was full of fire!  He was bit with the acting bug and auditioned for his first staring role as Bishop, at age 17, in the movie Juice. He recorded his first album, 2Pacalypse Now and surprised us with his first single, "Brenda's Got A Baby".  After watching that video we knew from then on that Pac had a heart regardless of how hard he appeared most of the time.  He was clearly paying attention to what was going on in his community.  He was a self-proclaimed bigmouth, but it wasn't his fault.  He was raised to speak his mind and stand up for what he believed was right (we should all be taking notes).

He defiantly had his issues with the law.  A woman claiming to be raped by him, fights, and shootings but Tupac kept his head up. He spoke at a number of events encouraging his people, letting them know that he understands their struggles and he will do what he can to make America a better place for them.  He released four hardcore, emotional albums before his death and a number of albums, containing previously recorded material, have been released since.  He starred in six films, Poetic Justice being my favorite, as the character Lucky along side the beautiful Ms. Janet Jackson.

.He knew his life would end before long.  It was very apparent in his music.  He constantly talked about his death and dreams he would have of being in a Hurst.  I believe he felt tremendous pressure.  Pressure from record companies and Black America. But he kept going forward until the clock ran out on him.  But trust me he still lives on in many many ways. Our generation, and probably our kids as well, will never be Tupacless.  They held a class at the University of California at Berkeley on his poetry for God's sake.  And his mother started the TASCA (TupacAmaruShakurCenter for the Arts) in Stone Mt., GA.

Tupac is the bomb to me! Musically he can't be touched.  He put so much heart into his albums. He made you want to dance one minute and cry the next.  He was sexy, outspoken, funny, and he took care of his mom.  What more could you want a man to be?!  And yes, he did things he shouldn't have but he was a great person.  I love him as much as you can love someone you have never met.  Eight years ago I put a replica of the cross he had on his back on my leg with his middle name running through it.  What I would have given just to get one hug from him……man.  And to the rappers that are trying to pick up where he left off.....thanks….. but no thanks.

I'm out.

Remember how I was saying that greatest hits CDs are the best thing since sliced bologna?  Well, I ordered Johnny Gill's Ultimate Collection album…..and it's the best thing since they put shampoo and conditioner in the same bottle!!  It is soooo sexy and soothing.  Johnny sings with such passion you can't help but believe what comes out of his mouth!  One of my favorite love songs of all time is "Can You Stand the Rain" by New Edition.  This CD has a quiet storm mix version (it's sexier than the original).  And do you all remember the song he did with Shanice, like 15yrs ago?  It's called "Silent Prayer".  She wrote it for the troops in the Gulf War. It tugs at your heart.  Then there's the song "There U Go" that he did for the Boomerang soundtrack, OMG!  One of the sexiest songs, period.  Then they give you the classics like "My, My, My" and "Where Do We Go From Here".  I don't know if you're familiar with the ballad "Quiet Time To Play" but all I'm going to say is that grownups need time to play grownup games (can I get an Amen?).  But the one I relate to the most is "I'm Still Waiting".  He's pouring out his heart on this track, letting us know that he hasn't found that one special person, the one he can love and depend on.  I'm dealing with those same feelings as your reading this but Johnny is helping me through it.  There aren't too many CDs that you can put in and let it play from beginning to end but this is definitely one of them.  If you don't have it yet do your soul a favor.  I have planes for this CD (wink wink)!
