Last week we recorded an in-studio performance for Breakthru Radio's BTR Live Studio segment. We'll let you know when it airs, but in the meantime, Golden Bloom was featured in their weekly "Hello My Name Is..." article where bands explain where their name comes from. Enjoy!
Golden Bloom is Shawn Fogel, an extremely versatile instrumentalist who is not afraid of constructing a good-hearted indie power-pop song here and there. His major tracks of late include "E.H.M" and "Doomsday Devices," the first two tracks off off his recently released LP (August 18th) Fan The Flames. Fogel and his cohorts create ear-candy somewhere in the spaces between groups like The New Pornographers, The Shins and Wilco. With music like his, it's no wonder why a sunny name like Golden Bloom came about, but beyond the "what," just what is the "how?"
As Fogel explained to BTR, "One day one of my musical co-conspirators, Jeff Patlingrao, pointed out that I shared a resemblance with one of the greatest thespians of our time, Jeff Goldblum. At that very instance I knew that the name of the project should share a similar resemblance." But the road to fruition can be a long one, so the two began to sort through a few options before they landed on one that stuck. "Goldbloom' or 'The Goldblooms' felt like plagiarism to me," Fogel explained, "and 'The Golden Bloomers' sounded too much like fancy underpants, thus we became 'Golden Bloom."
Surely the Jurassic Park player would be proud, and as Fogel went on to explain, "Although the music itself is not inspired by Jeff Goldblum, I believe that his contributions to the arts have indirectly inspired us all in some way." Thank you Alistair Hennessey.

Check out Blurt's 9 out of 10 star review of "Fam the Flames"!
Remember the name Shawn Fogel. It sounds like in the recent past he's had some innocuous bands and I believe this is the first record he has done under the Golden Bloom moniker. Still, don't let the rookie tag scare you off and don't hesitate to give it a listen as Fan the Flames is terrific. A pop record all the way with hooks that are both occasionally obvious yet totally effective. Opening cut "E.H.M" starts with some catchy roller rink organ and then a searing guitar hook to equal one of the catchiest songs you'll hear all year while on "Doomsday Devices" you might mistake his vocals for Jeff Tweedy but Tweedy hasn't delivered anything this snappy since Wilco's debut record. He slows thing down a bit for "She Leaves Me Poetry' which ends up diving into a lush pool of orchestration and melody while "The Mountainside Says" seems to veer off a bit into Dylan/The Band territory and again, to near-perfect effect. In the press kit Fogel stated that "these songs come from a frustrated optimism or an optimistic frustration." They say the greatest art comes from the most pain and while I don't claim to know where Fogel's head was at when he wroteFan the Flames , it's ok. I don't want to read too much into it. I just want to listen to these 9 superb songs and marvel at their simple beauty. Recommended Tracks: "E.H.M", ""Doomsday Devices", "Theme For an Adventure at Sea", "The Mountainside Says" TIM HINELY

There are different paths to becoming a fan. Sometimes the artist grows on you, a slow burn that builds into a raging fire. Other times a lightning bolt strikes you in the first few bars and you’re immediately engulfed. The latter perfectly describes my experience with Golden Bloom. The first song I heard was “E.H.M.”, the opener on debut album Fan the Flames, and within 10 seconds I was hooked. My first reaction was, “who the hell are these guys?”
Turns out it’s basically just one guy. Shawn Fogel wrote all the songs on the album. And he played all the instruments. And did the singing. Basically he did everything but record the thing. Once I realized that I was even more impressed. How can one guy do all this, and do it so well? I don’t have an answer to that question, but I can tell you this: whatever he decides to do in the future, I’m in.
