September's post- Festival Jam Night, first of the new season after the August lay-off,  kicked off with a funky set from guitarist Danny Lazarski and his trio Funked Up, swiftly followed by Guitarist Duncan and bassist John  from Dunfermline based blues rockers The Deal, with Grieg Johnstone from the house band on drums.  Taking the opportunity to replace their usual high octane approach, they excelled on a short set of moody, Free/Kossoff inspired tunes driven by Duncan's impressive, emotianal guitar work.

Ash Gupta rang the changes with some Soul, Reggae and Ska before a lively blues oriented set incorporating guitarist/vocalists Sandy Tweeddale (Blue Hyenas, Blues 'n'Trouble) and Derek Smith (Main Street Blues) and assorted bass players and drummers.  Topping the evening was a surprise peformance from singer/songwriter Andrea Glass, lately returned from recording in Nashville with luminaries Kevin Montgomery and Al Perkins.  Checking out the Jam Night, she introduced herself to Ash, then nipped back to her Hotel for her acoustic guitar before getting up with the band for four tunes, ending the night on a high note.  See http://www.andreaglass.co.uk/ for more about Andrea...get involved in her next recording!

Part of the opportunity offered by Jammin' At Voodoo is the freedom for musicians to get up and play something outside their normal repertoire...in the past we've seen Todd Gordon sing The Kinks...this month a couple of of regular guests are promising to deliver something a little different, including a feature from an ex member of Sid Griffin's Coal Porters...be there on Thursday to hear more!

A very cool evening at the March Jamming At Voodoo – after we’d managed to get in to the Speakeasy at all, that is!

While house band drummer Greig Johnstone had arrived early to successfully install his kit prior to an early evening stint (playing keys) at the Jam House, the rest of us were left loitering outside while a locksmith was summoned to break in to the Speakeasy after relays of staff proved unable to open the security lock.  With soundchecking still under way at the advertised start time of 9.30, a late start was inevitable...

However, a varied roster of Jammers (Jammists?) tuned up in short order, and the ever-changing roster of faces on stage included Derek Smith (guit/vox, Main St Blues Band), Stevey Hay.. (guit/vox), welcome new faces William Young (vox) and Nick Gould (tenor sax, Jazz Main), Kevin Dorrian (drums),  Dennis Westerberg (vox/harmonica, The Offenders), Dave Wallace (guitar/vox, The Offenders),  John Mackenzie (drums, Main St Blues Band), Viara Ivanova (bass/vox, Who’s Your Mama Now), Rodrigo Bermejo (drums, Who’s Your Mama Now), Xose Figueroa (guitar/vox, Who’s Your Mama Now), James Carr (vox), Richard Price (guitar, The Ubiquitous Kings Of Rhythm), Nico Echallier (bass, TUKOR), Miles Baillie (drums, TUKOR), Chris Rutherford (harmonica), and Jim McKenzie (harmonica).  The irrepressible Ash Gupta (vox/guit) also took the stage mid-evening, resplendent in understated Ozwald Boateng whistle, for a brief Reggae & Soul oriented set.  House band stalwarts included Angus Rose (keys), Trav “Saxingh” Panesar (alto sax) Greig Johnstone (drums/keys) and your correspondent - Rod Kennard (bass).

Good to see a number of non-participating musicians in the room, including members of Dougie Maclean’s band, visiting from Perth;  jazz chanteuse Debbie Davis, drummer Mark Forshaw, and saxophonist Auriol Hodgson.  We’ll get you up next month!

It’s also been (for me) an enormous pleasure to see direct results from the networking opportunities offered by the evening, as Jammin’ At Voodoo regulars start to get to know each other, dep in each other’s bands, cross-fertilise with other Edinburgh Jam nights, and form new ensembles. Some of my professional muso pals ask me why I can be bothered to help run the night, and play, for no money.  That’s why.

Blimey - a month passed already, & we're gearing up for another session!

Last month saw our highest audience figures yet - and probably the most Jammers - and the good news is that the Voodoo Rooms are happy to continue to host the Jam Night for the forseeable.   It's also great to see the wider effect of the Jam Night as various of our regular players have been depping in each other's bands, or even forming new ensembles, around Edinburgh in recent months.

Faces promised so far for this Thursday are Derek "Dezzbo" Smith of the Main St Blues Band, Dave Wallace from the Offenders, and (after an exploratory mission by drummer Rodrigo last session) members of fab Embra based, international combo Who's Your Mama Now, generally to be seen performing a  mix of well chosen, uniquely delivered covers and originals, by some inspired, acoustic oriented musicians. See

As ever, in the Speakeasy from 9.30 pm.  See you on the night!

So...after many months of scheduling & rescheduling, we finally welcomed guitar guru Neville Marten to Jammin' At Voodoo.  Anyone who has ever read 'Guitar' magazine or even played along with the free monthly tuition CD enclosed within, will know of Neville, and a good selection of Embra's finest blues pickers turned out on the night to play with the great man himself.
Backed by the regular rhythm section of Trav Panesar (Sax), Greig Johnstone (Drums) and Rod Kennard (Bass), the ever revolving cast included Matt Holborn & Miles Baillie  (Ubiquitous Kings Of Rhythm); Stevey Hay (Stevey Hay & the RayVons); Sandy Tweeddale(Blue Hyenas, Blues ‘n’ Trouble); Danny Lazarski (Blue Zinc); Chris Thomson (ex Café Jacques); and Jim Mackenzie (ex ‘Ozzie’ in Mac Sabbath!) on Harmonica.  The ever versatile Matt Holborn distinguished himself on both Guitar/Vocal and Drums - he'd left the fiddle at home. In a Q&A style feature mid evening, Neville told a few stories of his times as a guitar tech to the great, and the evening finished up with the ebullient R'n'B stylings of a triumphant Ash Gupta.
Next Jam Night - Feb 26th.  More news in due course!

Current mood:  energetic

We’ve have just had confirmation this morning that Neville Marten, Editor of “Guitarist” magazine for 15 years, now editor of “Guitar Techniques” & "Total Guitar" and editor at large of "Guitarist," will be our guest this Thursday, 29th January at the Voodoo rooms, fresh back from the NAMM Music Show in the States.

Nev has been guitar tech for some of the greatest icons in the music industry and has been lead guitarist with Marty Wilde's band for decades. He can play in so many styles it's frankly not fair, so here's chance to jam with Neville or just come and watch the fun.

It's taken us a year to get Neville here, to follow the great night we had with Jerry Donahue, so make sure you do not miss this event! The show starts at 8.30 and ends at midnight. Admission is free and the venue, as ever,  is The Voodoo Rooms, West Register Street, over the Café Royal.
