Excerpt from FIREWORKS MAGAZINE Issue 36, Jun/July 2009, Pg. 79
THE MUSIC IS OUT THERE by Nicky Baldrian
From the US we find newcomers 1977 who are KISS crazy, even their cover art reeks of KISS. The band rock and I caught up with Alexander Coin to find out more. ‘My first introduction to the world of music came when I was seven years old, in the form of the band KISS. A friend showed me a handful of the Donruss Trading Cards of the band, and even though I didn’t really understand what a rock band was, the mere fact that he told me that the bass player could touch his forehead with his tongue was enough to solidify them in the iconic ranks of Batman, King Kong and Star Wars,’ explains Alexander.’
He then played me a couple of songs from cassette copies of ‘Rock And Roll Over’ and ‘Destroyer’. The first track I heard was ‘Love ‘Em Leave ‘Em’ and I was blown away. That was it, I needed to hear and see more. I saved my pennies and a couple of weeks later I bought myself a copy of ‘Love Gun’ on vinyl. When I got that record home, the needle hit the groove and it was like magic. ‘I Stole Your Love’ churned away and I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.’
1977 are simply four life-long KISS fans that happen to write songs and play music. ‘KISS were such an integral part of all of our formative musical years that we wanted to pay tribute to them, but in a way that no KISS tribute band had ever done,’ he explains.
Alexander is naturally very happy about the new CD. ‘The record company (Play It Again Records) has been extremely supportive. They’ve reported confirmed sales in eleven countries on four continents and everybody is pretty stoked considering we haven’t even kicked off the tour. As far as the specifics of the material go, I don’t think it’s really our place to tell anybody what to think about the music. We just write songs that come naturally. If we didn’t, it would feel contrived.
We prefer to let the fans do the talking. If you’re interested in what they’re saying, you should check out the reviews at www.cdbaby.com/cd/1977 . The music that we offer is something that no KISS tribute group has ever offered to KISS fans in the 16 year history of tribute bands; ten original songs that are 100% KISS inspired. You know it’s funny; I have found that artists in all fields of the Entertainment Industry share certain qualities. One of these is that each artist produces their own type of art form based on all of their influences. However, that isn’t the way we work. We have one influence. When the members of KISS were Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, these four guys would write songs based on their influences; (i.e. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Babies and The Raspberries), release records and then tour in support of their efforts. Those songs would then be added to their catalog and later be referred to as KISS songs. Due to their style of their theatrical, live performance, these KISS songs could further be categorized in the genre of Shock Rock. When we compose our original material based on their influence, the argument now becomes, is this new music, now to be considered a new genre called KISS Music?’
The album was recorded at Minddrive Studios in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. ‘When we started to gear up for our rehearsal schedule, we decided that we needed a change of pace so we moved to SummerLynn Studios; a brand new recording facility also located in Myrtle Beach. The very first day we moved in, management suggested that we should keep some sort of log as to where we stood, so we could track the development of how rehearsals were progressing. So since we we’re already in a studio we decided to record the first rehearsal. I think we cranked out about seven or eight covers and if you’re curious, you can get a little taste of how things are progressing for the live show at www.myspace.com/1977themusic . I think track ten on the MySpace Music Player is a sound recording of us performing ‘King of the Night Time World’ live in the studio. It’s presented as a live simulation, but it does give the listener a fairly accurate idea of how our live show will ultimately sound.’
The band are currently rehearsing until the live show is perfected, ‘Then we’re going to hit the road for a couple of legs of a North America Tour. The great thing about this group is everybody is always working. Even when we’re not officially in rehearsals, the guys will get together and work on new material all the time.’
If you like Kiss you will enjoy 1977. Check them out at the above links.

1977 & THE WEEKLY SURGE
MYSTERY BAND 1977 UNMASKED - ALMOST

by Paul Grimshaw For Weekly Surge
(repost of article)
When we received a mysterious package at the Weekly Surge office from a Myrtle Beach P.O. Box, our first thoughts were "Anthrax?" - the poison, not the band. Instead we found something just as perplexing; a poster and CD titled "Rock 'n' Roll" from a new band, named 1977, on an indie label, Play It Again Records. A short, cryptic note from Alexander Coin, of A. Coin Management, requested a CD review in Music Notes and listed a few websites for us to visit. The image on the poster and CD cover is the unmistakable silhouette of rock icon KISS, in homage to the animated KISS album cover "Destroyer." So then we thought "tribute band?" and we were almost right. No phone number was listed on the letterhead, further adding to the mystery, but an email address was provided and was the only means of contacting Coin or, presumably, the band.

An unnamed 1977 band member in dark sunglasses hiding behind a 1977 postcard while posing next to author and photographer Lydia Criss (KISS drummer Peter Criss' ex-wife).
When Coin responded to my email inquiry by phone, his number came up "private." When I asked for the number he politely refused. I was surprised and initially miffed but soon came to realize that Coin, not a real name, had engaged me in a publicity stunt of sorts, whether I liked it or not. He and the band were (and are still) hiding behind the same style of publicity-driven anonymity that KISS used in the mid-'70s to help launch its career. Further research of 1977, through the various websites listed in Coin's letter, contained few clues and raised more questions than they answered. At www.myspace.com/1977themusic the first audio track heard is a fully produced 50 second spot with a professional voiceover, crowd effects and samples of a few of the CD's so called "hits." The second audio track is a recent recording from WKZQ's Flight Test show where host, Mase, debuts 1977's first single "Ladies Come First." I also found preview tracks from the project available for sampling and purchase, and a grainy picture of an unnamed band member in dark sunglasses hiding behind a 1977 postcard while posing next to author and photographer Lydia Criss (KISS drummer Peter Criss' ex wife). Similar shots with other celebs yielded no further clues. The most mysterious part of 1977's MySpace page is the black & white video clip, a cross between the Zapruder film of John F. Kennedy's assassination and Big Foot footage. In it someone who looks like Peter Criss disappears around a corner, with the caption "...could this be one of the members of 1977?"
Deciding to play along, I emailed Coin requesting another phone call, and while waiting slid "Rock 'n' Roll" into my CD player. The band's clever twist on the tribute became clear. Unlike most tribute bands, which perform and sometimes record the hits of the band it's honoring, 1977 has written and recorded 10 original tracks in the style of KISS. To hear 1977 is akin to uncovering lost masters of unreleased KISS material. "Ladies Come First," is the double-entendre laden track that sounds most like the original band. Instead of KISS classic "I want To Rock 'n' Roll All Night," 1977 has recorded its title track, "Rock 'n' Roll," in the same style but without ever edging too close to plagiarism. The same can be said for the remaining eight tracks, which are similar to other KISS anthems, most written and recorded in keys with which young and old can easily sing along. Crunchy guitars with matching bass riffs back adolescent lyrics and in most ways nicely honor the band being emulated.
When I asked Coin if he was the mastermind, songwriter, producer, lead vocalist, Webmaster and mysterious photographic specter of 1977, he reluctantly conceded the truth, saying "that is a safe assumption." It's hard to tell how seriously Coin takes himself or the band though he is all business on the phone, speaking slowly and carefully, so as not to divulge too much information, but this is the same guy who wrote the line "I want to put my rock 'n' roll deep in your soul." Coin, who has lived in the Myrtle Beach area since 2000, is the kind of guy who says he "has people in Vegas," where he's "in negotiations" for the band's New Year's Eve "world premier." The MySpace page launched late last year has gained nearly 34,000 visits. He says that "four individuals" participated in the recording of "Rock 'n' Roll" and that there truly is a band, though he declined to name names.
"There's a time and place for everything," said Coin, "and the reason we're taking this approach is that KISS maintained the same kind of anonymity with its fan-base in the 1970s." Coin says 1977 may launch other tribute-oriented projects and doesn't feel locked into KISS as its only honoree. He suggested future 1977 projects might include Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick, both bands, like KISS, which reigned supreme in 1977.
