Friday, December 12, 2008  babylonmagazine.net (ITALIA) Ascoltare questo parto malato degli Yak, parola che rappresenta una razza bovina che abita le lande più estreme e gelate, non è affatto un'esperienza piacevole o rilassante. La loro creatura è qualcosa che soffre sin dalle prima note, un vagito primordiale e molto urticante. Formati nel 1997 a Lomellina, gli Yak non sono capaci di rimanere per più di quattro battute fermi su un ritmo. Pensate agli scatti violenti e iper-cinetici dei Mars Volta immersi in acidi hard-core e avrete qualche punto di riferimento che vi indicherà, ma non determinerà precisamente, la loro natura. Non sono le urla o le compressioni, affidate a macchine ultra moderne, a rendere questo disco qualcosa di pesante e indigesto ma, paradossalmente, la sua varietà. Si passa da hard-core intriso di atmosfere quasi minimali ad accenni alla Nine Inch Nails, per poi lambire i Cave In di "Jupiter". "Iron Flavoured Candies", insomma, è quello che potremmo definire il melting-pot dentro il quale le varie influenze dei singoli membri del gruppo e i generi si fondono assieme; più banalmente conosciuto come crossover. "Death I'm On Your Side" sembra quasi scritta da Trent (Reznor) e regalata ai Depeche Mode epurati degli arrangiamenti più edulcorati. Ciò che sorprende è la capacità di spaziare dal metalcore più estremo al suo diretto opposto con una facilità imbarazzante. Qualcuno potrebbe accusare il gruppo di non avere una propria identità o semplicemente di voler dimostrare le loro capacità tecniche, peccando di arroganza auto-celebrativa. Vi assicuro che in realtà il gruppo ha le idee ben chiare sul percorso da seguire. "G M" è, probabilmente, il pezzo che vi potrà far comprendere meglio l'anima frastagliata e molto complessa di questa band. In alcuni passaggi mi ricordano addirittura un gruppo che ormai non esiste più da molto tempo, gli "Orange 9mm". Accenni trip hop, fiati che si muovono leggiadri in mezzo alla confusione ordinata delle chitarre, sound secco e tagliente, come se ci avesse messo mani Albini (Steve) in persona, sono una parte degli ingredienti che mi hanno convinto. Dentro il cd troverete anche molto altro, soprattutto la voglia di osare di una band a cui l'etichetta di "chi non ha più niente da perdere" sembra adattarsi perfettamente. Da ascoltare sedati se volete evitare danni permanenti. Your on OTO Records a label ive not heard of how did you sign with them. Oto Record is a small independent label which is growing fast here in Italy. The situation is very simple: OTO Record believe to us and we sign with them, nothing more. We hope this merge will be a reality also to the other side of the ocean. 3. You music is such an odd mix of Avant, Noise, Metal, Jazz , Hiphop and Pop music . how are the live shows , do you find it hard get person on shows with like minded artists First of all, in the YAK's live shows, there is a great sound impact "Pure Violence", difficult to record on a CD. The Yak is a heavy animal and it moves only in flock. Then, can you image 5 sweating yaks that beat and jump on the stage? they are very difficult to manage!! So this kind of show draws a lot of attentions and the yak's family like the national geographics's spectators grows day by day to see this violent flock run by the cities. We don't know if there are minded artists inside, but we can say that every show we talk about our music with a lot of "curious", it 's a nice thing. 4. Aural Music seems to be distroing the CD they are parent of the amazing Code666 are you happy with distro so far. Iron Flavoured Candies will be out on the second of june and this is the only important thing. Certainly we are happy to be distributed so far. 5. ' Iron Flavored Candies' is such an odd release have you read anything in a review that shocked or upset you? Yes, many webzine said that iron flavoured candies is a low… butWe aren't upset because if we were it you should have some collaborator less (ahahaha!)However, every metal/death/core album need more than one listening and we are conscious that Iron flavoured candies is a strange album for the music in general e this aspect make we proud. 6. what bands influenced YAK's Sounds We are influenced by all the situations lived and every listening, there isn't any model to follow... simply we try to take inspiration from the time we are living. Anyway we listen a very large range of different music styles and artists, so the inspiration could be retrieved by anything, anytime and anyway. 7. What your thoughts on the digital age are you for digital releases, Myspace, webzine or do you miss Radio, Print zines and a full lp in the days of oldtoday everyone could produce, propose and distro a CD using the digital age's technology, so out is the music caos… webzine have big quantity of reviews to do in a few time and the people could have gigabyte of music in a day, but not the time to listen it at all!!! The qualities of the sound productions are going low , but in a moment you can reach kilometers that you can't in a lifelong… the life's duality is here in like everything… Yak is served by use this technologies because now are necessary but we can say that Iron Flavoured Candies is recorded and produced without disrespectful editing and mastering. Today the most of productions are standard, fully of compressions made for the "crazy volume's war" We join now to the digital age, in the u.s.a. we should agree with the "Less Volume" movement. 8. How does Yak creat the music in a studio is it a group effort or do you work on music 1st of lyrics??? Every yak's tracks is a vision. Have you ever sing the soundtrack about what you are seeing and listening, walking into the street of your city?This is an usual idea for a track. And by this way every track has a different taste… 9. Being on a smaller label do you have any real North American push or is just Aural music pushing it here Our Sicilian friends said that we will play everywhere in U.S.A. but they are talking only about "Pizzerias"!! And also they continue to saying that before the travel, into the instruments cases they'll must put in "something"!!! 10. Will you be touring on this CD and if so with who? We are presenting the album in many show cases here in Italy for the moment. The most interesting show we are waiting for, is with THE LOCUST the 28th of Augus. Noisecore trifft Chaoscore trifft Funk. Turbulent, chaotisch und heftig. Dann beginnt der zweite Song und auf einmal ist Hip-Hop angesagt. Als ich mich vergewissert habe, dass es sich hier wirklich um das neue Album der italienischen Band Yak und nicht etwa um einen Sampler handelt, schießt mir sofort der Name Candiria durch den Kopf. In der Tat sind Yak musikalisch verwandt mit Candiria. Zwar klingen sie nicht unbedingt wie sie, aber verfolgen sie doch einen ähnlichen Weg. Noise, Chaos, Hardcore, Hip-Hop, Punk, Elektro und Funk wird in einen Topf geworfen und heftig verrührt. Man gewöhnt sich recht schnell an den Mix, wird aber dennoch immer wieder überrascht von dem Einfallsreichtum der Band. Manchmal klingt das etwas nach 90er Crossover/Nu-Metal, oft aber auch sehr modern und zeitgemäß. Viele Parts sind sehr entspannt während andere ziemlich brutal ausgefallen sind. Zwar ist das Album insgesamt sehr interessant und definitiv musikalisch wertvoll, dennoch hat es die Band nicht geschafft all ihre Kreativität in schlüssiges Songwriting zu kanalisieren. Immer wieder tauchen sehr coole Parts auf, mindestens genauso oft allerdings auch ziemlich schwache und verwirrende Parts auf. Alles wirkt ziemlich zerfleddert und strukturlos. Weiterhin kommt negativ hinzu, dass die Band über keinen überzeugenden Frontmann mit genügend Charisma verfügt um die Instrumentenfraktion zu bändigen. Schade, der Ansatz von Yak ist nämlich sehr interessant und der Mut der Jungs ist äußerst lobenswert. Wer auf abgefahrenen Sound steht liegt hier richtig. No, nessuno, i ragazzi sanno il fatto loro questo è certo, o almeno sanno bene quale sarà la strada da intraprendere, il loro percorso musicale e che cosa saranno da grandi, di certo metallari pentiti da ciò che affermano che odiano i 'merdallari' o almeno gli ignorano senza riconoscerne il fondamentale apporto sulle generazioni future e quindi anche della loro, ma ad un ascoltatore di buona musica come mi ritengo, della più disparata e senza temere l'incoerenza, senza barriere e paravento mentali, oltre che adoratore di Mike Patton in tutte le sue forme e salse, ebbene, questo primo lavoro dei milanesi YAK non fa né troppo caldo né troppo freddo alle mie orecchie. Chissà quali bestemmie pioveranno al mio cospetto, ma il disco pur essendo piacevole all'ascolto non decolla del tutto facendo della sua disomogeneità un altare eretico, almeno per le idee non del tutto geniali come dalla descrizione di sopra si potrebbe ingannevolmente percepire…Le idee propriamente originali non ci sono, nonostante il disco sia nel suo insieme una perla splendente del troppo spesso opaco panorama Italico perché quello che suona bene in questo disco è proprio quello che sa di gia sentito o che molto gli si avvicina, a partire dalle linee vocali e dai refrains fino ad arrivare ai veri e propri tributi e saccheggi propri del metal, e hard e post rock primigenio o da loro tanto denigrato, io preferirei un atteggiamento più conforme a quella che è la reale dimensione di questa band, ovvero underground, una giovane band coraggiosissima appena fuori dallo stato larvale, una crisalide pronta a metter su le ali (seppure con le idee chiare e una buonissima preparazione tecnica sciolinata soprattutto nel gusto degli arrangiamenti e nella semplicità dei passaggi ed incastri con l'elettronica) che si sta creando uno spazio, una dimensione in un marasma, questo si, di soliti cliché ed etichettamenti molto fastidiosi e spesso fuorvianti, quindi non sarò io a dire cosa suonano gli Yak in questo "Iron flavoured candies" e come lo suonano anche se di certo gli spunti e le assonanze non mancano così come i ritmi ed aperture accattivanti.Una cosa è certa: ascoltando il disco mi sovviene un di tutto un po', vecchi ricordi insomma, e ciò che spicca è la perizia negli arrangiamenti di alto livello, poi il gusto per certe sonorità moderne mescolate a quelle più impolverate delle sperimentazioni a cavallo tra gli 80/90 e una buona dose di arcigni passaggi dalle tinte forti che collidono anche con il metal estremo, ma se devo scendere nei particolari è irrinunciabile fare nomi come Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Dinosaur Junior, Queen Of The Stonage, Beyond Dawn, Soundgarden, Biohazard, Meshuggah, Richard D. James, Ministry, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, etc ... specialmente nelle loro interpretazioni più dinamiche e sperimentali.Molto belle sono le reminiscenze 90iane, e le sovrapposizioni melodiche che dolcemente si cementano in modo compatto al gia interessante scheletro frammentato dei brani, ognuno da prendere come a se, impreziosito dalla umoristica e dal tocco se non rock molto ammiccante (senti ad esempio "My God", splendida) oppure in una song come "Perfect Society" o nella stessa 'Insects Eat Your Car' si evince la voglia di attaccare in un modo vario ma uniforme nella sua contaminazione psicotica, quasi delirante e sadica, dove ottoni impertinenti e solitari echeggiano ad accerchiare un sound sinuoso e sibilino; samples acidi e ficcanti si insinuano nella mente senza per questo risultare discostanti almeno per chi è abituato al genere di musica sperimentale ed elettronica spesso 'drug influenced' poiché psichedelica nella sua irrazionalità. Belle anche le tinte forti di 'Snuff In Cocacabana' ed insidiose le atmosfere di trip hoppiane baciate da Apex Twin di 'Death! I'm On Your Side' che poi cambia in un hardcore 'speedoso' e assai ruvido e tecnologico nel susseguirsi e dibattersi contorcendosi del brano.La costante dinamicità si fissa su punti cardine, ovvero la musicalità dei pezzi che mantengono sempre una loro essenza intrinseca seppure contaminati dai più disparati stili, ed anche la notevole esigenza di cambiare aspetto senza per questo cambiare la sostanza e risultare venduti (come succede nella stragrande maggioranza dei casi in ambito 'post' qualunque cosa gli si avvicini…) e la ottima preparazione tecnica (bassista e batterista su tutti) e senso del gusto negli arrangiamenti (anche nei più 'strani') è il punto di forza su cui si sviluppa il disco degli Yak, un'ottima promessa, sperando che riescano a sopravvive a loro stessi.Penso proprio che questo disco sia immancabile nello scaffale, e si spera lettore, di qualunque ascoltatore alla ricerca di novità nostalgiche, il disco, così come il suo sound, suona freddo ma allo stesso tempo frizzante e 'skizoide' per via dei continui cambi e spigolature risultando in una parola davvero interessante ed alla fine del cd si resta anche con l'amaro in bocca perché forse qualche altra track non ci sarebbe stata male.Brani suggeriti: 'Insects Eat Your Car ', ' Snuff In Cocacabana .., ' My God ' e .. Faire un mélange metal-hardcore / hip-hop en ajoutant d'autres éléments comme l'électronique peut sembler contre-nature, pour le coup j'avoue avoir du mal à cerner l'univers que le groupe veut construire, tant tout ça reste confus. Quel bordel ! On pensera parfois à du RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, en d'autres moments du SYSTEM OF A DOWN ou du KORN, oui la musique de YAK est plutôt jeune dans sa forme, et c'est un peu avec la même approche juvénile qu'il faudra je pense accepter ce « Iron Flavoured Candies ». Au-delà de cette impression de fourre-tout, YAK n'est pas un groupe de bras cassés et on pourra apprécier la qualité de la base rythmique, et même si le chant n'est pas exceptionnel en soi, la capacité qu'a Lion à passer d'un style à l'autre est remarquable. Le monstre créé par ces Docteurs Frankenstein n'a toutefois pas la classe qu'on aimerait lui trouver. Questa è solo una delle frasi promozionali che citeremo nel proseguo della recensione, tanto è il loro potere evocativo (ed esplicativo) su quanto effettivamente i nostrani Yak abbiano creato. 'Iron Flavoured Candies' è il secondo aborto neurotico della compagine, oggi più che mai impegnata in una sorta di post metal sperimentale e malato. La rabbia, la frustrazione e il nichilismo come manifesto sonoro (e di vita) di cinque ragazzi italiani, in preda alla più disperata crisi psicotica che abbiano mai conosciuto. Tutto ha un senso in un disco in cui ogni cosa sembra andare fuori posto, quasi alla disperata ricerca di un appiglio logico e razionale. L'onda è travolgente e il risultato inevitabile. Saltano gli spazi, i tempi e le strutture metriche di queste undici (diciamo) canzoni: ogni influenza sonora che si incontra in questo collage chiamato 'Iron Flavoured Candies' seppellisce la precedente in un vortice di parossismo sonoro del tutto irreparabile. "L'intero album è un affresco postmoderno violento, rozzo, ostico, ostile, complesso come un libro di Borges e angosciante come un film di Cronenberg". Un agente patogeno che si insinua negli spazi reconditi del sistema nervoso e ne avvinghia le strutture di base, fiaccandone la resistenza in maniera lenta e inesorabile. La resa è dietro l'angolo e la compagine ha fatto davvero di tutto per renderne il più doloroso possibile l'andamento. "Anche perché gli Yak sono prima di tutto una famiglia. Una famiglia vera, dove ci si sputa addosso, dove le guerre si fanno tutti assieme, dove ci si perde spesso e ci si ritrova sempre, una famiglia con la quale non passeresti un weekend al mare ma l'apocalisse si. Una famiglia come la vostra, insomma. Quella degli Yak vi sta dando le chiavi della porta sul retro. I don't know many things about the members of this act from Milan. They don't even have an official web site; only a myspace page. They also have an awful English translation for what they have as a bio. On the first hearing the accent sounded bad. I can't say the same about their music.It's by far the most progressive release I've come across from Italy. It will remind you of 'Dillinger' and of 'Cave In' but also the old activists 'Consolidated'. They seem to have heard a lot of Relapse mathcore with the addition of experimental acts in general. They are sometimes completely jazz, some are attacks in hardcore sounds and some are speeches in a rap kind of style! This sounded like 'Candiria' to some of you, didn't it? They are full of arsis, breaks, mood and rhythm changes in the whole duration; they have strong guitars and aggressive vocals and a very good sound, too. And the accent ain't so bad after all. These guys have a clear view of what they are doing and that's impressive.It's not so easy to get it from the first time you lay your ears down to it so it demands patient listeners. Where you're into to the neurotic riff a trumpet joins along the way or some Eldritch (who are also Italians!) vocals pop up from nowhere! A good thing about them is they try not to copy their influences. The transfer from one theme to another is quite unique for a first full-length effort. This is a very tight-together-act with gifted musicians that have chosen the hard way but prove that they are fully equipped to succeed on this. Best real progressive metal work I've experienced for 2008. Se você pensouna espécie de bovino que vive na regiãodo Himalaya errou feio. Y.A.K. é uma bandade Post-metal italiana que tem a alquimiamusical como seu mais forte predicado. Norecém lançado álbum "Iron Flavored Candies"esses músicos de Milão surpreendem nossosouvidos juntando os mais dispares estilosmusicais em um som autêntico e cheio defi rulas, os caras conseguem prender a suaatenção em cada detalhe das 11 faixas doregistro. O que ouve-se é um trabalho muitobem executado de uma banda totalmenteexperimental, com guitarras desconexas eritmos variando entre a cadência e a histeriae que por vezes repousa em um ponto exatode fusão entre a vanguarda e o tradicional.O interessante é a forma natural como eleencaixam estilos como o Hip Hop, Metal eHardcore dentro do registro sem que issodescaracterize a banda e nem mesmo pareçaforçado, pois as musicas evoluem ou retrocedemdeles de forma transparente, comopode ser observado nas faixas "Y.A.K." e"Rebus (1,2,3,4,5)". Há também faixas ondea banda mostra um perfi l mais Rock/Metalem faixas como "Insects Eat Your Cars" quese guardando as devidas particularidadeschega a lembrar o Mudvayne, e na animadíssima"Jack Is Back". O restante do álbum éexperimentalismo (que ouvindo eles tocaremparece coisa simples!).
