Today is June 20th - Scott & Jay Couper's birthday (guitarist & drummer for
Jo Jo Laine)

Summer Solsticehttp://www.calendar-updates.com/info/holidays/us/summer.aspx

VARULVEN NEWS Marty Balin is in town next week. We are beginning a brand new album on either June 25 or June 26th. He was supposed to open for Johnny Rivers this Saturday but has to appear with Jefferson Starship in New York so the LOVING SPOONFUL will be with Rivers Saturday night instead. The legendary David Maxwell (Freddy King's keyboard player) will be coming to the Marty sessions! John Till (Janis Joplin's guitarist) can't make it this time around. http://myspace.com/martybalinmiracles

We have an international deal for Marty's new DVD. The "unplugged" version of the album will be available for FREE download to everyone who buys the DVD. We hope to see Bobby Hebb back in Boston singing and playing to promote his new album THAT'S ALL I WANNA KNOW. We're working closely with his record label in America, of course.

Varulven Records will be adding LOTS of new CDs to EMusic.com in the coming months. Tontileo is busy working on the cover of our new Unnatural Axe download - Live At Mission Control August 14, 1988. This is a professionally recorded set of songs the boys recorded with us when I was managing the New Kids On The Block studio (and Jimmy Miller at the same time; you try doing both and surviving to tell about it!) We have four songs on the multitrack (24) recorded on an SSL Board. This is the live DAT - live to 2 track with all the instruments going through the SSL and perhaps New Kids engineer Hideki Sunada at the controls (unless it was Joe Cuneo, I have to check the tracklist and tapebox). I sent out rare photos of Unnatural Axe 1978 to Richie, Tommy, Tontileo, Gary Soprano, Liz Ireland, some of the people involved with our original UNNATURAL AXE session from 10 years before the Mission Control event. These photos were found during the recovery mission after the flood...they were among the last items found as we were cleaning out the old room...and it was a BIG old vault... Due to the enormous move of about 4-5 tons of material (8 miles from the old Woburn facility to our new space in Medford)

I'm Waaay behind on my writing assignments - subsequently tons of mail and normal day-to-day record label work has not gotten done! But we are up to date on all our ebay sales and have just hit 650 Positives with a 100% rating (601 distinct sellers/buyers) as of this week. I got a vicious/wicked cold this past weekend, it knocked me out for about 36 hours - no work got done after I moved materials on Saturday till I came out of my coma on Sunday night. It was surreal - kind of like being in the movie THE SIXTH SENSE (which I was watching). My gardner said that the mold from the old facility probably made me ill...it is plausible. In any event, we have a beautiful new facility with tons of shelving (and we can always use more, so if you know companies that have shelving they want to get rid of, let us know - we have SO MUCH material accumulated, master tapes, cassette tapes, Billboard Magazines going back to 1970 - and today we found the very first Joe Vig published music reviews from Arlington High School's newspaper when Capitol Records sent us discs to yap about. This goes back to 1971...

they are being xeroxed tomorrow!...

maybe you'll find it in your mailbox

FUTURE RELEASES:

BOSTON ROCK & ROLL ANTHOLOGY VOL. 21
We're resurrecting the series and the first new
edition will be music recorded or mixed at Newbury
Media.
http://myspace.com/bostonrranthology21

BFD - The Platinum Sound/Newbury Media Recordings
Joe Viglione has produced BFD over a 15 year
period. The Newbury Media tapes were the
"Demos that got the deal" with the band and
Rolling Stones producer Rob Fraboni.

BFD LIVE AT BUNRATTYS
Joe Viglione recorded about 24 bands "Live at
Bunrattys". Along with his own group there are
performances from area artists including
Macey's Parade, Tripwire, BFD, and many more.

Rather than issue a "Live At Bunrattys" compilation we
are going to release the full-length performances and
maybe after a four or five CD boxed set tribute to the
nightclub.

JOE VIGLIONE live at Bunrattys featuring
Jeff Locke on guitar, Mike Quinn on drums,
Jimmy Brooks on Bass and John Morse of Reddy Teddy
and Barb Kitson.

In the summer of 1988 former Atlantics guitarist
Jeff Lock, Zulu's bassist Jimmy Brooks and Count
drummer Mike Quinn were THE COUNT band. Our three
lead singers included Joe Viglione, Barb Kitson of
City Thrills and John Morse of Reddy Teddy. This was
the final show and it sounds GREAT! I was also
producing Barb Kitson that summer at Mission Control.

We also played THE PARADISE that summer and that
music will be on DVD!

Sunday, May 06, 2007

On April 17th we got a phone call that our Varulven facility was flooded by the N'orEaster.  We've  been frantically moving all the materials to another floor but have found lots of magazines and newspapers SOAKED along with some rare albums, a very rare Rolling Stones disc, some albums containing Bobby Hebb covers like the Red Johnny Mathis album with "Sunny", a Cher disc, lots of great stuff that has water damage.  25 Moe Tucker "I'm Sticking With You" 45 RPMS now have water damaged covers, and 8 big reels of tape containing the basic tracks to the second and third Count albums - LOVE & FLAME and THE INTUITION ELEMENT.  It is going to cost $1200.00 to transfer them to DVD after they go into a convection oven so you know I sent the certified letter to their insurance company.

We'll be keeping everyone informed about the Varulven Records flood, we might have a few concerts in the future to celebrate our 31st year and get some information out.

It is 11:36 PM on May 5, 2007.  I have THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS on...was thinking of putting the DVD on when, lo and behold, HBO was running it.  Hmmm...maybe The Oracle gave me some intuitive vision?

LIFESWORK by JOE VIGLIONE

Liner notes by the artist

"Lifeswork: 2005 and Counting" is the first volume of material I put together for publishers.  Liking the flow of the songs, we decided to release it commercially.

Boston O'Donohue, son of my bandmate Jo Jo Laine, did the cover art from photos Jeannie Archibald took in the 1970s on Revere Beach in Massachusetts.

"There's Nothing Like A Hit" actually hit #1 on The Boston Phoenix MP3 site in 2005, about fourteen years after it was recorded.  "Transporter" is the theme to my TV show Visual Radio, which began broadcasting in 1995.  These songs have been performed on college radio,in many a Boston area nightclub, to the huge Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Mass. which we played in 1994.  Some of the songs were released in Paris on the New Rose label in the 1980s; we took "Love & The Flame", the title track of my second French album, right off the New Rose 4 CD Boxed set which was released in the new millennium.  Lots of tunes, lots of memories, and this is just the first of many releases we are presenting on Emusic.com.
