Officials urge revelers to use public transportation and be on their best behavior

Salem, MA... Halloween attracts tens of thousands of costumed revelers to the City of Salem who visit numerous attractions and partake in the Fall festivities.  This year, with Halloween falling on a Saturday night, we are anticipating larger than normal crowds in Salem.

Given that Halloween is generally perceived as a mischievous holiday, coupled with the fact that large numbers of visitors come to Salem clad in costumes on Saturday, our public safety officials have extensive plans in place to ensure the evening is safe and fun for all participants.

The City of Salem is working diligently to mitigate visitor impacts to residents, improve crowd control, and encourage an orderly exit out of the City at the end of the evening.  The following requests are being made of people planning to spend Halloween in Salem this year:

Take public transportation.
The MBTA has added extra train service from the North and South.  The Salem Ferry is connects Blaney Street, Salem, with Long Wharf North, Boston.  We anticipate considerable motor vehicle traffic coming into the city, and parking will be at a premium.  Thus, public transportation is strongly encouraged.

Plan to depart after the Halloween Fireworks.  Halloween is a great street festival in Salem.  In addition to bands and DJs performing on five stages around the downtown, Radio 92.9 is producing a Main Stage Concert featuring the Dancing Nancy Band, a Dave Matthews Band cover band.  Dancing Nancy will perform on a temporary stage at the top of Washington Street (between Federal and Bridge Streets) from 9:15 - 10:45 PM followed by fireworks over the North River at 10:45.

The fireworks are the conclusion of the public Halloween celebration and the end to the evening.  Police and Public Works Departments will begin clearing streets and moving crowds out of the city immediately following the fireworks.  Visitors should expect to depart Salem after the fireworks (approx. 11pm), which is timed to coordinate with the last trains out of Salem.

Visitors coming to Salem should be on their best behavior.  Given the larger numbers, the City has adopted tougher sanctions for disorderly behavior. Uniformed police officers will be brought in from eight other communities to support Salem Police in their efforts ensure the safety of all Halloween revelers.
Fines for any disorderly conduct during Halloween evening, such as drinking in public, vandalism, littering, disorderly behavior, have been tripled up to $300 per offense, the maximum amount allowed under the law.

Surveillance Cameras are installed throughout the downtown and will be monitored by Police officials throughout the evening.  These cameras will aid downtown enforcement efforts.

Leave weapons - real or fake - at home.  Police will be confiscating these items.

Public drinking will not be tolerated.
Public consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Salem.

Salem, Massachusetts is recognized internationally as one of the best destinations to celebrate Halloween and the month-long Haunted Happenings festival.  Salem is pleased to present live music throughout the downtown on Halloween night, as well as a carnival and food vendors.

We encourage our guests and visitors to bring their common sense to the celebration, and respect the City of Salem, and its 40,000 residents.  Through public cooperation the city will maintain a fun and safe downtown environment for all.

Here are a few pictures from around Salem this weekend (before the rain arrived...)  More than 8,000 people walked through the doors of the Salem Regional Visitor Center on Saturday.  Those of you who walked down the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall found this delightful street performer in front of The Trolley Depot...

The Carnival opened on Derby Street yesterday.  Come ride on the Ferris Wheel and the Carousel!

The Today Show's Sara Haines was in town on Saturday. Here she is at the HalloWharf Pumpkin Festival, where she was the judge of the best decorated pumpkins in various age groups.

These lovely ladies were celebrating a Bachelorette Party. I ran into them outside of Rouge, and then again at Rockafellas.  I hope the wedding is as much fun as the bachelorette party!

And here is the pedestrian mall today... in the rain.  Thanks to all of the visitors who toughed it out, put on their ponchos, and enjoyed Salem despite the weather!  It was a dreary day, but the museums and attractions were dry and welcoming.

It's been a crazy, crazy week in the land of Salem Haunted Happenings.

(Tip of the day: If you are taking a taxi from Logan Airport to Salem, it should NOT be on the meter, it should be a $50(ish) flat rate. Please get a price quote before getting into a cab!)

Here's another tip: If you plan to visit the Salem Witch Museum, go early in the day to get your timed-entry ticket. They sell out shows early in the day. Once you have your ticket, you can do something else and then come back.

Save some dough... Buy the combination ticket for the Witch Dungeon Museum, Witch History Museum, and New England Pirate Museum and you'll save $5. If there are two of you traveling together, that's $10, which is enough for a large bag of kettle corn.

Buy tickets online for the Salem Wax Museum's Haunted Neighborhood. They have a variety of options at different prices for you to choose from, each providing entry to the different activities in the Haunted Neighborhood, including the Salem Wax Museum, Frankenstein's Laboratory, Within the Witching Hour, and the Witch Village.

Is this your first trip to Salem? Get on a Trolley. Perhaps you've heard me say this before? I tell everyone, going anywhere for the first time - get on a trolley! You'll learn so much about the destination that you weren't expecting, and you can make informed decisions about what you want to do while you are in Salem. And - the best part: your trolley ticket is good all day, so after your tour, you have a shuttle! We have two trolleys: CityView Trolley Tours and Salem Trolley. Take your pick.

My final tip for the day is this: If you can't take the Commuter Rail, the Salem Ferry from Boston, or City Connect Express from Boston, and you have to drive into Salem, bring cash and plan to park your car and leave it. City parking garages and the Church Street lot are $20 cash upon entry for the day, there is metered ($.25 per half-hour) street and lot parking, and many, many private businesses charge for parking in their lots (anywhere from $5 to $20).
Salem is a walkable city - the walk from one end (The House of the Seven Gables) to another (The Witch House) is just under one mile. The one-way streets and busy intersections can be sources of great frustration in this busy Haunted Happening season. Wear comfy shoes and be prepared to walk.... or use that trolley ticket for on-and-off transportation all day!

Create your perfect Haunted Happenings experience at HautnedHappenings.org. Don't let the weather forecast scare you away - it's going to be a great weekend in Salem!
