Be creative
; the competition will be cutting, giving you a chance to carve your way into Halloween lore (forgive us…we can't resist).

But before we get into specifics, let's talk loot:

1st Prize:

9. Contest rules may change without notice.

10. All judging decisions are final.

11. Void where prohibited by law.

Pumpkin Submission Tips:

◊ Most of all, be creative. Think of this as art; the pumpkin is your canvas.

◊ For best pictures, place your pumpkin against a dark background.

◊ Adjust the focus so the pumpkin is the sharpest object in the shot.

◊ Remember the pumpkin must be lit (as in jack o' lantern).

If you're night shot skills aren't superior, you can
also submit a day shot. But we must see the lit pumpkin for the entry to qualify.

◊ A good idea is to tell us what the pumpkin is when you enter your submission. Just in case it's not clear.

NYC's Freedy Johnston (8:30) is among the most darling of critic's darlings still escaping mainstream notoriety, with reedy songs of alienation and isolation (wonder why it doesn't catch fire). Central Market South
Flying Balalaika Brothers
6:30 / No Cover
Bluegrass, Russian Folk

Flying Balalaika Brothers fusion of American and Russian mountain music (and zany antics) could've ended the Cold War a whole lot sooner. Among the "brothers" is Zhenya Kolykhanov (Z-Rock), founding member of Red Elvises.

D.C. indie outfit Thao With The Get Down Stay Down officially passed the blogosphere buzz threshold to full-on indie hit, bordering on twee, but never going full happy-skip tilt to fit that maligned label.

Emo's (lounge)
Indian Jewelry, Cry Blood Apache, Expensive Shit, Benko

Strong, multi-faceted lineup. Cry Blood Apache whoop up the war cries on boring indie; beat-driven, industrial, new wave crunk oughta sum 'em up. Americana, Folk Rock, Soul

Otherworldly Americana from the son of one of the genre's founding fathers; Bukka Allen (10:15) jockeys between piano and accordion to create his sonic roots sound. Nigerian-born, honey-voiced folk rocker Kalu James' is starting to make the splash he die in NYC before moving to Austin.

Schneider's musical explorations continue to evolve, but many Bob-heads hold the Lonelyland era as the gilded age (8:30, $10). Multi-instrumentalist Jeff Plankenhorn (11:00, $5) is often seen as the sideman: guitarist for headlining Bob Schneider for example. Fronting he brings a soulful side to bluesy roots rock.
