An Exhibit of Curiosities at Henderson
Sean
C. Cook, a Henderson State University art major, will be your guide
through his senior art show, which he has dubbed “An Exhibit of
Curiosities.” The show will represent his work during his educational
endeavors, but will focus on his video work, as well as his robots,
contraptions, and characters, which are all a part of his romanticized
world of science-fiction. A public reception will be held on Wednesday,
March 11 from 2:00-4:00 on the second floor of Henderson’s Huie Library
in Arkadelphia. The show will hang through March 20.
Cook’s love
of the video medium emerged during his second year of college. It was
his third school year, however, that stirred the creative juices of
Cook’s creativity after his art history professor introduced him to the
surrealist short films of Jan Svankmajer. Cook began feverishly
teaching himself the technical skills needed to help his own surrealist
short videos come to fruition. Then, Cook made a discovery that would
change his artistic output entirely.
Cook, a recovering goth,
discovered a genre and aesthetic known as steampunk, which happened to
be the more elegant uncle of goth. Steampunk pays homage to such things
as the fashion of the Vicotrian era, the science-fiction ideology of
H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, the entertainment qualities of Vaudeville
and the circus, and the steam-driven (hence the name) technology of the
turn of the Twentieth century. This had been what Cook had been missing
in his life all along. It shows in his robotic sculptures, his
character creations, his otherworldly contraptions, his graphic design,
and especially his video work.
Cook has called Hot Springs,
Arkansas his home since 1987. He and his wife have two children and
continue to reside in Hot Springs. For more information on Cook, his
