    Sustainability got sexier last week as Coldcut and Jade Jagger hosted the opening of Surya in King's Cross. The Club4Climate project is London's first taste of eco-friendly clubbing, making clubbers happy in the knowledge that their organic beverage-induced booty shaking can generate 60% of the energy needed to run the club. The venue's most exciting innovation is the piezoelectric dancefloor, which uses quartz crystals and ceramics to turn clubbers' movement into electricity!

    Previously seen in the Sustainable Dance Club in Rotterdam, this is Britain's first exposure to such technology. The rest of the power needed will come from a wind turbine and solar energy system, with any surplus used to power private homes in the area. The club will also be installing the latest air flush, waterless urinals, low flush toilets and automatic taps to ensure maximum water saving plus less greedy air conditioning units.

    The project is clearly trying to affect behavior on a much wider scale, too, requiring patrons to sign a 10-point manifesto on entry, giving free entry to anyone who can prove that they walked or cycled to the venue, and encouraging as many other clubs as possible to adopt his philosophy.

    Property developer Andrew Charalambous is behind Club4Climate, appearing in character as 'Dr Earth' to be more down with the kids. He says the club aims to 'stop preaching to people and use an inclusive philosophy to create the revolution [needed] to combat climate change.' A Club4Climate island is also planned for 2010, although how clubbers will transport themselves to the island hasn't been mentioned.

    hailing from the beautiful land of bristol, julie ("jules") straw is a most unique and humble individual. her window to the world hasn't lost it's childlike, wide-eyed wonder. she identifies closely with innocence and compassion, yet is all-around creatively mischievious. this is most evident in her own life and her art as a musician and committed vegan. her music is a fairly accurate reflection of herself and her personality: enigmatic, playful, beautiful, artistic, and poignant. if there are electronica clubs in heaven, PinkLogik is what the music inside sounds like. let's sit down with jules for a while and pick her mind some, shall we?







        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: hey jules! how's the weather on the other side of the pond?

        JULES: Hi there! Well today isn't too bad, quite warm. Although summer is coming to a close I think that we'll get a few more sunny and warm days in before the winter.


        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: in just the past year, PinkLogik has gained a lot of momentum and your music has a bit of an internet fanbase now. to those that aren't yet familiar with your music, let's get into your artistic history some. where did your love of electronic music come from, and when did you begin writing/recording electronic music?

        JULES: I think it was when I first started actually paying attention to music, I mean real attention, when I was around nine years old. I have an older brother and at that time he was a teenager and started bringing home LPs (on vinyl) and he'd play them to me. A lot of it was stuff like The Art of Noise, Jean Michel Jarre and lots of '80s synth pop. He would copy them onto cassettes for me to listen to. I think he played a big part in sowing the seeds that grew into my musical tastes. So ultimately from a young age and without really knowing it, I was listening to a lot of electronic music. Sometimes I'd play the albums over and over again because I liked them so much. I like the way electronic music makes me feel, I love electronic sounds, the sky is limitless with a synthesizer. I was about 16 when I started actually writing music with a computer sequencer. It was a very basic one, but it did the job at the time, as I was into rave and techno music and a lot of early rave/techno music is actually very simple. Before that I had been teaching myself how to play keyboards from books and so forth. I'm not a superb keyboardist, but I can play with two hands!



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your musical influences?

        JULES: Probably my biggest influences would be Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Moby, Mu-Ziq, Orbital, Depeche Mode, Bjork, this is a long list…



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: do you have any non-musical influences at all? like authors, poets, philosophers, etc.?

        JULES: Not really, in truth I don't read many books. I like poetry but again I couldn't name a poet that has influenced me musically. I'm not really that knowledgeable about philosophers either.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: if PinkLogik were a type of food, what ingredients and spices would the recipe call for?

        JULES: Lets see…. I suppose it would be a stir-fried dish that contains all the vegetables under the sun, mixed with some mint for freshness, and a sprinkling of chilli for warmth.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: why the name PinkLogik? is there a story behind the name?

        JULES: It's very simple this one. I love pink so much if I could marry the colour I would!! And I felt that adding 'Logik' on the end sounded quite, um, techy and electronic. I also think it sounds quite playful and upbeat.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what is your creative process?

        JULES: Depends on my mood, what I want to acheive, what kind of style I want to create at that moment. Sometimes I'll start with writing a drum pattern or several patterns, and then add bass, pads and synths. Sometimes I'll start with a keyboard tune or a sequence and build the track around that. Once I wrote a track by doing the vocals first, then built the tune around the vocals – that was an interesting process! From time to time I dry up musically, then it's time to take a break and clean the house or something.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your current theological and/or spiritual views?

        JULES: "I believe in God but not in the sense that He's a person (y'know with a beard etc), he's more kind of an energy force in my mind. I am a very spiritual person who feels that alot of religions have validity. I have particular sympathies with some of the elements of Christianity, but also paganism and Buddhism. I'm probably a Panenthiest, but I need to read more about this before I start labelling myself! Not that I feel a label is particularly important to me. I believe all religions in some ways, point to the same things, like a kind of interconnection. Whichever path you choose to find God or a higher power isn't important, it's the finding and recognition of a higher power that is. This is purely my personal belief and have never sought to force this onto others. If people are non believers then that is their choice – of course!"



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: does your spirituality/religious faith influence your music, life, or creative process?

        JULES: Maybe subconsciously it does. Perhaps God, or my spiritual guides, help me with my creative flow when I'm writing music. With regards to my GhostVoices project I tend to light insense and kind of meditate before doing an EVP session. I do believe this helps me to 'pick up' the voices more readily.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: you have a side-project. could you expound on that some and how that differs from your work with PinkLogik?

        JULES: Yes, it's called GhostVoices and it's based around Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP for short. I'd been reading about this phenomena and thought it might be interesting to see if it really worked. I admit I was skeptical at first, because I'm one of these types that has to see it to believe it when it comes to the paranormal. I do believe that there is a lot of fake stuff out there. So one day whilst alone in the house I got out my microphone and set it to record, I spoke loudly saying 'Good Afternoon', and let the recording run for a further 30 seconds.

        After that I enhanced the recording a little, increased the volume etc and listened back using headphones. Sure enough in amongst all the white noise a voice appeared very distinctly saying 'Good afternoon Julie'. I've still got that recording and I was shaking with shock and excitement when I heard it first time.

        I don't know who that voice belongs to and I'm intrigued as to how it got there, but I know it's there. Since doing this, I've got quite a few more recordings, and I'm basically putting them to atmospheric and dark music.

        The style of this project is different from my PinkLogik material because the moods I want to create with this are dark and deeply atmospheric, where as my PinkLogik material is more upbeat (most of the time) and varied.

        I don't plan to crossover and start using EVP in my PinkLogik stuff. I guess I'm also doing this project to open peoples eyes up to hard evidence, in my opinion, that there is an afterlife.

        [note: we understand that EVP is a sensitive and controversial subject among many. M.O. does not necessarily endorse EVP experiments, however -simply for the purposes of clarification- more information can be found on the subject here.]

        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your opinions regarding western religion (christianity, the church, etc.)?

        JULES: "I think any religion is fine, western or not, so long as it is not used to create fear in people or used to control or oppress people. I personally don't go to church. I did go a couple of times to a Catholic Church with some Catholic friends whilst I was at university. It was a good atmosphere, but I felt kind of like an outsider. I think it might have been because I'm not Catholic. I feel that a Church or place of worship isn't always necessary, as you can worship anywhere."



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: on a different note, what's your opinion of the current state of the US?

        JULES: Well, since I don't live there I can only give an outsider view. It is concerning that George W Bush is still president, I'm not entirely sure whether he's stupid or isn't as stupid as he makes out. There's something highly insincere about him. I think at one point he even said that God talks to him!! God told him to start the war on Terror!?? Yeah, right Mr Bush. I saw that film about the conspiracies for 9/11 aswell. It was worrying to think that the US Government could have been involved in setting up that. Very worrying, and confusing for the American people.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your goals for PinkLogik?

        JULES: Just to keep on making music and keep on evolving. I'd like to do a soundtrack for a film someday too. I think my main goals are to work in film and TV, perhaps do some music for adverts. I've had a few connections so far, but nothing extravagant. I've been asked to do a track for a small, low bugdet film. I'm quite looking forward to getting into that.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: have you achieved any of those goals yet?

        JULES: Not yet, I'll keep you posted!



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: on a more personal level, what has been the hardest experience for you?

        JULES: I think it was hard for me when I left for university at the age of 27 and had to live in Halls of Residence for about 2 years, in a small shoeboxed size room, with a load of other people who were messy, noisy and generally inconsiderate. That was quite a hard experience! And looking back, I think I was too old to be there.

        There were some plus points, I met some nice friends whom I shall keep in contact with though. I nicknamed the place 'Hells of Residence'. Another hard thing would be that I've moved around a lot since 2003, and I've found it hard sometimes being away from my immediate family. Circumstances have moved me miles away from my Parents who live in Lincolnshire now. I hardly see any of my family at all these days.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your greatest joys in life?

        JULES: I feel very lucky to now live in a really peaceful and leafy little town just on the outskirts of Bristol. I feel joyful to live in a house that is clean and tidy and quiet. I also feel joyful that Bristol is very vegan friendly for eating out.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: ...your greatest fear(s)?

        JULES: It sounds far fetched (and possibly morbid) but I sometimes fear that I may die in an accident or whatever and no one will then hear the music I was writing at the time!!! Incidently, I'm too young to die just now….



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are you the most passionate about?

        JULES: I'm very passionate about justice and human and animal rights. The abuse of power makes me quite angry, so I'm quite a passionate believer in justice and sticking up for people and animals that can't defend themselves. Interestingly (or not?) I was bullied at school when I was quite young, so perhaps this played a role in me being this way, I don't know.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: concerning the mainstream "pop" music industry as a whole, do you have any opinions about it's current state?

        JULES: Yes, and I don't wish to offend anyone but this is what I think: I feel it's become an array of disposable drivel mostly. A lot of mainstream pop music sounds the same to me. I find it uninteresting and unchallenging generally. Very occasionally you do hear the odd good pop song, but that happens only rarely these days.

        It all seems to be very much about image and not about the music. It's quite sad, but I do believe that eventually it'll kill itself off. We're already seeing an internet music revolution where interesting music that wouldn't ordinarily be heard is actually being heard. Don't get me wrong I think they'll always be a demand for that type of mainstream sound, it seems a lot of people like it. Or perhaps they're being told to like it?!



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: if you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?

        JULES: I'd be an ash tree. I have an ash tree outside the door of my house infact, and I can see it from my window. I like ash trees, they're 'ard, and they spread their little seeds everywhere. I'm forever pulling up the 'weeds' from our garden! I also choose the ash tree because it's the tree that symbolises March, the month in which I was born.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: ...and what kind of animal?

        JULES: Probably a cat. A vegan cat though… If that would be possible. I love cats, they're fantastically astute and sensitive animals, also very cute too.



        MANNEQUIN ODDIO: what are your plans for the future?

        JULES: To grow old with dignity. And probably write some more music. Lots more music. And some more GhostVoices and EVP stuff. Hopefully a film soundtrack or three…

    'mosaic electro' from PinkLogik will be back in stock in about a week. so far, this has been our most popular release and seems to be in constant demand. we thank you! jules (PL) is wrapping up her second release, so be looking for that to come down the pipeline in the not too distant future. and, yes, if there is a female equivalent to moby, it's most likely our jules!


    'Visions at 3AM' from le pre noir will (finally!) be released in late may/early june.

    'visions' is a beautiful blend of IDM, ambient, and rhythmic dark-atmospherics. highly recommended for anyone that craves gorgeously creative music.


    also released in late may/early june , the debut CD from ghostheory titled 'the wailing wall'.

    the music is best described as sombient darkwave bordering on dark-ambient noise.


    other than release news, Kultureshift Music is in the process of building a new website now that the name has officially changed from mannequin oddio media. we are relocating to portland, oregon in early july. please wish us luck and keep us in your prayers/thoughts as me make the 3000 mile trek!

    once in portland, amyzan (a.k.a. zanizm) will pick up working on her music and plans to release something later this year.

    also, the compilation titled 'what has eyes' will finally see the light of proper CD release. we apologize that it's taken so long to getting around to this release. there was some red tape we tried to go through and decided to just go another way. thanks for all the emails, questions, and support. we love being a voice for the voiceless and have every intention of seeing this release through!
