death metal?! who likes death metal?
at the end of last year i took up the offer with my friend adam to go see one of his favourite bands, malevolent creation. having heard some of their shit i thought it would be cool to see a band like this live. the painful vocals, machine gun double bass drums that vague resemble the cannon fire of an anti-aircraft machine gun and the guitar riffs, oh the guitar riffs!
before that day (10th, march, 2007) the only death metal bands i had heard were of course malevolent creation and death, which i both liked.
the thing about death metal, fuck i'm gunna call this DM from now on to save hassle, is how fucking hardcore and heavy it is. so you might be thinking like slayer or the bled or something with equally coipous amounts of distortion is that kinda heavy but the thing about those guys is they get radio play. from what i've heard a DM album is lucky to sell 10k copies.
so on with the day...
upon meeting adam and oli after they had drove into cambridge they proceeded to offer me a death metal t-shirt which i declined and decided to stick with my kaiser cheifs shirt. i was totally feeling adams 'death' t-shirt but i couldnt stand some fanboy coming up to me at the gig and asking me questions about death which i couldnt answer and i'd end up looking like some kind of poser.
oli and adam eager beavers

the train journey actually went pretty quick and upon arriving in london we decided to head straight for camden and check the venue (the underworld) out. i have no problem with camden at all, it's a warm friendly place, but not my most favourite part of london. however i do love the food down in the lock.
mmmmmm chinese

after munching our way through noodles and tariaki (sp?) chicken i decided to give my mate RV a bell and meet up with him, he's working in some bars in london now, but first we were gunna go back to the underworld when......
adam bumps into phil from malevolent (it doesnt look like it but this is officially the most psyched you will ever see adam)

i sure hope phil doesnt read this but i had no fucking idea who he was to begin with, i was thinking this guy was an old friend of adams, he was dressed like a roadie and seemed to be well aquianted with adam. truth is, this guy is safe as fuck! you'd never know he was a shredder from one of the worlds gnarliest thrash/death metal band. i talked to him about some of malevolents shit and he seemed real interested in what we had to say, it's hard to be on that sort of level between a band and a geeked out fan, but just like when we met CKY, this guy had it nailed.
after a while we had to part our ways and decided to head down to RV's bar on old street.
old street station (they all look the same)

i thoughgt RV had told me to meet us there ASAP and i could write a whole fucking blog about how we went looking for the illusive dragon bar and got lost in the yuppiness of old street but i wont. however i will mention that adam was so bummed out about leaving camden and malevolent and was just begging to go back there :-D
Back in camden we had decided to meet up with the harvster in a bar near the station called the worlds end, to those who havnt been there, it's just like a bigger version of the king street run in cambridge.
drinkies

getting served was also a bitch, we got id'd by the barmaid and adam handed her his provisional and i handed my citizen card which she didnt accept, the convo happened something like this...
BarMaid: i'm sorry we don't accept this form of Id, you can buy it off the internet
Me:you totally can't. i bought this just so i could bring it into pubs and not have to lug my passport around, there's a legit webstie for it aswell.
BM: alot of people have been coming in here with fake cards like these though
Me, trust me i work in a pub in cambridge and we accept these all the time, you cant fake them.
BM: well this is a pub in
london (she had been waiting a longtime to use that one)
Me: :-|... go ask your manager
she did and i got accepted.. fuck the system, i'm really 14 HAR HAR!!!!.
so after a while and some drinks RV decided to show up
mr harvey leslie

god is it me of is this a long ass blog>? sorry i'm not used to writing blogs...
anyway gig time was near and we decided to go grab some much before the gig. we spotted this cool pizza place outside the pub where the pizza's look totally rad untill you get up close to them. RV dissed the pizza's infront of the chefs and the fucking people on the street, time for plan B then. woody's the kebab shop by the tube station, it's fuckign great, everyone should go there!
i ate so unhealthy that day!
GIG TIME!yeah one thing i have to say about the underworld is it's so fucking small i couldnt believe the foo fighters done that secret gig there. we chugged some beer and watched the support bands.
the first band, rotten sound, were pretty cool. a swedish grindcore band who play fast but brutal songs, i didnt think the crowd was down with the whole grind thing though.

the sencond band, incarnation were totally fucking cool. they seemed to take a real tongue in cheek approach to DM though... you'll see what i mean if you watch the vid below. they opened up with a extract from evil dead and incorperated the slow, apocalyptic guitar riffs with the mandatory metalhead mop shake
ha metal as!
and finally malevolent creation came on. these guys were sick as fuck. opening with eve of apocalypse. they just played a set full of brutalness

these guys really know how to fucking shred and the crowd were lapping it up. there were nutters just getting up on the stage and jumping around some dickheads more than others at one point i became concerned for the bands well being... at a death metal gig WTF?!?!?!
adam got right at the front and was loving every minute of it
adam scott and brett hoffman share a close moment

homicidal rant breakdown (probably the best breakdown in thrash metal)
after malevolent we had no intention really of seeing rotting christ (the headliners) so we chipped it back home via RV's bar on old street. if you're even in old street i suggest you check it out. i think it's called the dragon bar and it's a really mellow place.
i went home being really stoked about my night. MC are really a cool fucking band, woulda been sweet to meet the others but if phil was anything to go by the rest of the band would be as cool in person as they are on stage. it's kind of a shame that guys in bands like this don't get more recognition and arnt raking in the cash that metallica or more approachable metal bands are but then again these are totally about their music. there's no scene or perception about these guys, there's no posing or trilby's or skinny jeans. it's just 100% hardcore music from dedicated musicians, that's why this shit is so pure and great. malevolent creation if you read this keep fucking rocking guys
