Current mood:  mellow
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
 Does my sassiness upset you?
why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
 Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
you may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise

Current mood:  rejuvenated

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

(written in Feb. 2001)

My soul, my heart, and my body is cold

Like a February day

Heaping with snow

I’m trapped in an open field

Nowhere to go

I have no one,

I have nothing

My heart is bare

Except for this music

I do not want to hear

But will a love song heal my soul?

I’m weeping and crying

Over the love that we shared

If only this love song would heal my soul

At once I was lost

But now I am found

And those words that I’ve longed to hear

Sounds like music to my ears

Such sweet sounds of love and passion

Filled my soul with unspeakable joy

My heart feels like it is filled with

The sweetest candy that comes to mind

Forever I will love him and always know

That this love song has filled my soul

Such a Sweet melody

To be kept in heart

Forever even when we fall apart

To always have

To always hold

To always know

To always remember

To always stay;

You will always be cradled in my arms

And from now until forever be held in my heart

You are my Valentine, even when we are apart.

And no matter how long

And no matter what happens

I’ll never take for granted

That love song that brought you back

And even through doubts

I will always remember

That somehow

Or someway

A love song will heal my soul
