This myspace page doesn't list much in the way of gigs.   That's because frankly, I've been too lazy to update it.    Adding gigs to Myspace is kind of a pain in the neck.

I do keep my own website fairly up to date,  so check it out   if you want to know all about what I'm doing. Click Here For Steve's Website

There's a lot of things that I've been wanting to write about,  but haven't put anything into a cohesive thought pattern,  so I'm going to just ramble here....

  • Everyone who works at the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester should get a direct pass to Heaven when they die.  In dealing with them recently, I could not have been more impressed with how caring and supportive everyone is.
  • How come when you're running late,  there always seems to be someone on the road in front of you driving just 2 mph under the speed limit?
  • Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me,"  while a beautiful song, is the most agonizing thing in the world to listen to if you're anywhere close to the end of a relationship.  Doesn't matter which side of it you're on.
  • People who stop in a busy doorway to have a conversation (at Wegmans, for example)  should be given a mild electric shock to keep them moving.
  • Smell is a powerful memory trigger.  I got a whiff of someone wearing the same perfume a former girlfriend wears,  and it brought back all kinds of memories.  Kind of a strange feeling.
  • My friend Deborah Herbert is in town for a couple of weeks.  I've lined up some great musicians,  and we'll be doing a couple of gigs.   You don't want to miss them.  Stay tuned for details.
  • I attended a wedding recently.   I like being comfortable,  but every now and then it's nice to see a crowd of people dressed up and looking pretty.
  • I believe if they didn't allow political candidates to declare which party they belong to,  we'd have a much more informed electorate.
  • We're all too busy.  Every weekend throughout the summer, there are at least four events going on.  Festivals, fairs, concerts, parties, etc.  It's nuts.

I know that just about any fortune can apply to just about anyone at any time,  but as I stand at the crossroads,  the one I got in my cookie tonight seemed apt:

USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO CHART YOUR FUTURE.

Lately I've been doing a lot of gigs that I call "wallpaper gigs"   My job is to provide some atmosphere.   Sit in the corner and play softly while people are having dinner and enjoying their own conversations.   I always try to do my best,  but I'll be honest,  on some nights when nobody is paying any attention,  it can be tempting to phone it in.

I kind of thought last night was going to be one of those nights.  I was playing at The Brown Hound - one of my favorite places to play.  For a Friday night,  it wasn't as busy as it could have been. A few tables early in the night seemed indifferent to whether I was there or not.  Then, about fifteen mintues before my normal quitting time,   a couple of tables came in and seemed very interested in what I was playing.   They made a few requests, and I did my best to play what they wanted to hear.  Then something interesting happened.  The power went out.  Not just at the restaurant,  but the whole area went dark and silent.   I happened to have my acoustic guitar last night,  so I said I could still play.   The people at the Hound brought out extra candles,  and the customers really seemed to enjoy the intimacy.   They actually drew a little closer and really enjoyed the music without any amplification.   Suddenly,  I went from wallpaper to the center of attention.

I ended up playing almost an hour longer than I was booked for.   Although it is my job to play,  I left at the end of the night feeling like I just got a reminder of why I do what I do.   It is fun.  I work hard at improving my skills and giving people the best I have,  but at the end of it all,  I'm doing what I love to do.

My mind works in funny ways.   Lately,  I've been dealing with a serious health crisis in the family.   It's been stressful,  to be sure.    This isn't really about that.

A number of very kind friends have made comments to me to the effect of,  "if you need anything at all, don't hesitate to call."     I can't tell you how much I appreciate that from people.   It really is comforting in times of stress to know that friends are there to support you.

But my mind can't leave it alone.  The other day,  I starting laughing uncontrollably thinking about the reactions if I started taking people up on their offers with requests:

My car could use washing.    I'm a little behind on getting the laundry done.  The grass is gonna need mowing.      I've got a whole jug of change on my dresser that needs rolling.   I'm kinda horny!

Today was nice so I decided to dig out a pair of shorts.  In the pocket,  I found $9 that must have gone through the wash and sat in the pocket all winter.   Don'tcha just love found money?

When you are a musician,  there's really not an awful lot of danger.  I recall one time when I was playing at a bar and a few guys got a little bit rowdy,  but that wasn't really directed at me.  I don't think people even throw rotten tomatoes anymore if they don't like the music,  so I'm pretty much safe when I'm working.

So why am I thinking about any of this?  My sister ran into an ex girlfriend of mine that I haven't talked with in a meaningful way for a while.  She works at a bank, and as it turns out, there was a robbery a while ago.  She was the unfortunate teller.  Luckily everything is fine,  but it got me thinking about how you just never know what the day is going to bring you.

I few years ago,  I found myself in Memphis on April 4.   I didn’t know the significance at the time.  Now I do.    Do you?

As an April Fool’s joke,  I suggested to my band that we learn "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree"  by Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Now it’s in my head and it won’t stop.

Current mood:  pleased
My niece was in her high school musical this weekend.  The Wiz!  She was Aunt Em.  When she sang the first solo number of the show,  my eyes were a little watery.  I’d like to blame it on the strong perfume the old lady sitting in front of me was wearing,  but I think some of it was pride.   She was good.

I was really impressed by how talented the group of kids as a whole were.   It seems like when I was in school,  there were always three or four really talented kids who naturally got the lead parts,  and then the rest of the cast just did the best they could.  As I watched my niece’s show,  I couldn’t help but notice how much effort and enthusiasm even the chorus kids put into their parts.   It was really something.
