DJ DAZ
(UMOJA Soundsystem)

With over 20 years of experience as a dj/..producer/..promoter and all around horticulturalis..t on digging for beats and planting the musical seeds of rhythm and sounds in the Los Angeles music scene, DJ Daz brings you the best in soul, reggae, hip hop, jazz, funk, and dance classics... as co-founder of Umoja Hi-Fi, DJ’s Daz and Tomas were highly recognized as pioneers in the L.A. underground club scene, and in 1993 combined their knowledge of music to create the Umoja Jazz & Raggae lounge and UMOJA Soundsystem, a crew of like minded DJ’s that have branched out all over the country, spinning grooves from San Diego to New York City, and spreading the good vibes of UMOJA (a Swahilli word for Unity).

During the early nineties Daz was invited by DJ Marques Wyatt to spin the opening set, at the now the legendary weekly acid jazz club BRASS. BRASS brought something to the table that had the music industry standing around with their mouths and ears open; Marques, Orlando, DJ P, and Daz, brought sounds ranging from rare groove and hip hop, to dancehall reggae and house music… from BK to JA, U.K. to L.A. Jamiroquai, Digable Planets, The Brand New Heavies, The Roots, The Pharcyde, Big L, and many others did their first shows in Los Angeles and the on the west coast via BRASS promotions. DJ Daz then went on to spin parties and after parties for Sade, Rage Against The Machine, Macy Gray, Lenny Kravitz, Ghostface Killah, and the Coachella arts and music festival.

Never one to fall short of his endeavors, and always through his love of music DJ Daz moved on to become a resident DJ for “Chocolate Bar”, one of Los Angeles’ longest running true school hip hop clubs. Chocolate Bar garnered rave reviews in local and national publications as the place to be. A virtual melting pot of local people, up and coming musical artists; Jill Scott, Mos Def, and Slum Village all did impromptu sets at Chocolate Bar. Celebrities. Zach De La Rocha (Rage Against The Machine), Vince Vaughn, and even Ellen Degeneres were seen rubbing elbows at Chocolate Bar with hip hop fans and music lovers alike.

Since 1999, DJ Daz has been recording his mixes of “soul, rare groove, hip hop, reggae, and ‘ting” available to down-load for free @
dazdillinja...podomatic.com , and so in the immortal words of Robert “Nesta” Marley and how Daz sees that his approach to music is the same as his approach to life… One Love!

PERFORMING LIVE
very special guest:

Jeremy Ellis

(Ubiquity - Detroit/LA)

Freestlye live set specialist.

Pianist/ singer/..synthisizer/ MPC programmer

Detroit’s Jeremy Ellis (Ayro) is a sonic chef who mixes ingredients from across the musical spectrum. The freestyle live set specialist, pianist, singer and MPC virtuoso sounds nothing like you’ve heard before. Audiences stand in awe while witnessing the joyful fury that is his performance style. His fans often resemble that of students as his wildly intelligent, yet unforgivingly danceable tracks perplex the most eager and adept melodic minds. Combining a lifetime of classical training with a meticulous obsession with sound, Ellis demonstrates himself as one of the forerunners of a ..new era.. in electronic music pushing instruments beyond their creators' intentions.

He has been called the voice of Detroit's new sound and even acclaimed by Stevie Wonder himself. In a city with such important heritage as Motown and the birthplace of Techno he was awarded Best Electronic Artist 2009 by Real Detroit Magazine. Ayro has worked with such luminaries as Carl Craig, John Beltran, Recloose, John Arnold, Underground Resistance, Bugz in the Attic and Alton Miller to name a few.

With poetic lyrical flow and melodic ingenuity combined with vintage sounds like the Rhodes piano and the Moog with raw sounds of the street through the earthly growl of the 808. Ayro’s intrinsic use of the MPC has grown into a wild toad's ride that hasn't been seen since Hendrix non-chalant shredding of guitar licks with his teeth.

Our OFFICIAL 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY

design courtesy of lee james|myspace.com/djleejames

Featuring VERY special guest:

DJ Spinna

Arguably the world's best DJ, Spinna is one of the most in-demand DJs in 3 different genres of music: house (as one of the top producers on the scene, remixing for Atlantic Records, Colombia Records, as well as independent house labels); Hip-Hop (his smash hit "Tribute to Dilla" single with Phonte of Little Brother; member of the Jigmastas; busy as a hip-hop producer his name is on dozens of releases dating back to 1995); and Soul (his "Wonder of Stevie" comp with Bobbito turned a new generation on to the music of Stevie Wonder); his LPs on the BBE label have showcased his amazing soul production touch -- such as his classic remix of Donnie's "Cloud 9" -- his "Wonder-full" party attracted Stevie himself (!!), and he is also the man who created "Soul Slam" -- the Prince vs. Michael Jackson party to end all Prince vs. Michael Jackson parties!). No other DJ (except for perhaps Jazzy Jeff and Kenny Dope) can claim this "Triple Crown" rep amongst the world's DJs -- which is why many consider Spinna to be #1.

ABOUT FAIR TRADE

PAYING FAIR WAGES FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Fair Trade is a global movement that promotes decent wages to workers in developing nations in hopes of creating sustainability. It aims to build relationships between producers and consumers and it promotes fairness for women laborers while protecting child labor laws and supporting the local empowerment. Anti-Body relentlessly seeks out fair trade and ethical ingredients from across the globe. Fair Trade Federation membership for each of the co-operatives ensures that fair trade practices and guidelines are upheld.

ABOUT ANTI-BODY
A MEANINGFUL LIFE…AN INCREDIBLE STORY

What do you get when you mix an accidental death, a group of individuals who desire a meaningful life, and a business of fair-trade natural body-care products? An impactful narative--the story of Anti-Body.

When a tragic accident killed her fiance in 2004, Tamara Johnston-McMahon quit a dream job in the film industry to try to make sense of her new, unwanted life. Grief compelled her to seek meaning for her existence. With the help of her sister and brother-in-law, Shelby and Steven Moser, Tamara launched Anti-Body in 2005.

Frustrated with a sense of powerlessness to leave a positive imprint with their lives and work, they embarked on a mission to create a consumer product that would benefit both the customer and the individuals from developing countries who produce their ingredients.

After extensive research about the most natural and beneficial ingredients, they formulated a body-care line that would include fair trade certified ingredients. They pledged to create SLS and paraben free products as well as initiate long-term relationships with the laborers who supply their ingredients.

Through fair-trade, Anti-Body is able to directly fight poverty by providing fair wages to the co-operatives who manufacture some of the natural ingredients used in Anti-Body's products. With the company came a spiritual transformation in which Tamara found her life's calling.
