Atari 2600 Challenge announced for 2009 show

The Video Game Summit staff is proud to announce the Atari 2600 challenge featuring the return of Laserman 2k3 and its sequel Laserman and an old time Classic arcade for the 2600, Phoenix.

Laserman 2k3 is a hack of Keystone Kappers for 2600,taking place in the future where you “Laserman” have to catch “Dr.X” before he escapes his lab.Laserman 2k3 has the similar game play as keystone kappers with new graphics. This game made its official debut being played on an emulator at our 2004 show and then in cart form as part tournament/prize in 2005(which was won by Steven Lucas)
Laserman is a 2600 game I did by scratch using batari Basic complier, which compliers a basic program into a 2600 binary file, and it based on my first game I did for the ti-99/4a also by the same name. This game unlike the predecessor takes place in the past (on the ti version it’s 1984) to fight off aliens from the future.(they come to the past because our technology isn’t as advance as it is the future where they have been defeated). We have learned that their base in the Bermuda Triangle. Now here’s the catch, they are clocked so you can’t see them, but you can see their bombs drop, your objective is to shoot down the bombs.
Both of these games will be in cart form (with a special label being made) and the Tournament starts off with 6 players playing Laserman 2k3, then the top 2 will play Laserman. The player who wins will get a Gift Certificate to the AVC News Stand (http://cafepress.com/avcnews) and walk away with both carts. The Laserman Challenge starts at 2pm.

At the recent Midwest Gaming Classic, Paul “ZimmZamm” Zimmerman, has not only rolled the score on Phoenix during a Phoenix tournament at the show, but has also set a new World Record for the game with s score of 1,124,779. A month later, at his house, he has beaten that score with a score of 2,344,018, which was recorded and sent to Twin Galaxies.

The 2009 Video Game Summit will be the only place to witness his attempt to beat his two scores and possibly make history as he tries for three million.
(We ask you that if you plan to take pictures, please no flash photography during his attempt).
 Those who register online will get to enter the show 2 hours before the show starts to witness Paul’s attempt from the start (as well as see other challenge games as well before the actual tournaments)
You can also have a chance to beat his scores or get the high score of the day during normal show hours from 11am to 2pm, in a walk up tournament, where you sign up at the tournament tables and play (you are allowed 2 practice games before your actual game). The winner will receive a Gift certificate from the AVC News stand and a prize from one of our sponsors (To Be Determined).
