So here I am. It's crazy when you move to a new city because it's like being the new kid in school all over again. You get settled, start having a life in one place, then you move to another one and start all over again.

I'm going to an open mic tonight to check out the scene and see what the deal is with these writers in town. I was at the Blue Bird Cafe sunday which is a famous writers venue here, but unfortunately, couldn't get in. Popularity+small capacity=waiting outside if you don't get there in time.

I've been working on a demo to give out when I play at open mics and/or gigs here until I get something "real." I've got most of the instruments done and my good friend and esteemed drummer Anthony Schumann will be laying some drumz down on it next week so it has a more lively feel than the Garageband loops that have been there. Vocal still need to be done too, but they're on the way.

Oh and job hunting. Who could forget that? It sucks just like it would anywhere else. I've been trying to get some students and actually had a couple of inquiries today, one of which was serious, the other was basically like one of those questionnaires that people forward to each other. I still don't know if the person is serious (I think it's another musician/teacher, don't ask me why I think this, but it had a tone of jealousy over the fact that I mentioned that I had a degree.) But either way, life keeps rolling on. I've been writing a lot too. A lot. And they're really good songs! You'll probably be hearing them soon.

Anyway, like Jerry says, take care of yourselves and each other! A.

I Just Wanna Fall In Lust With You (A.James)

The amplifiers are powered down. The lights come up and everyone's scrambling around,
Because no one wants to go home....no no no No one wants to go home alone

Chorus:
I just wanna fall in lust with you tonight. I'm here and I'm gone, no time to love no one tonight.
I know you know the score, so lets check our hearts at the door.
Cuz I just wanna fall in lust with you tonight.

I'll never be your whole world and you'll never be mine girl
Have you heard that old line about your father stealing stars from the sky, girl?
If so I've got a million more, maybe one you'll like.
I just can't stand the thought of you walking out the door without me behind (you)

(Chorus)

Bridge:
This don't mean I wouldn't love to love you,
I'd just be afraid of missing you

Chorus.....

Bars are funny places. Everyone's seen it. The end of the night, the lights come up, everyone who hasn't closed the deal with someone is trying to get it done quick. This one was inspired by a guy I used to play with, though I painted him in a better light in this song than he really deserves to be. On the flip side though, this one is just as much about being lonely as it is about sex.

Lonely Like A Church On Saturday Night (A.James)

I woke in this room still drunk from last night,
There were a hundred hammers pounding in my head.
Don't remember a think I did or anywhere I went,
But I remember every single word you said.

You said that you don't love me anymore, and you don't know if you ever did.
The faith I put in you was a lot.
Now I feel so low, that the curb looks a mile high.
I had more faith in you than I did God.

Chorus:
Now its Sunday, and I'm lonely, Like a church on Saturday night.
I wanted to be, your one and only, but you took that love and you turned out the light.
Yeah I'm lonely like a church on Saturday night.

I thought our love was a revelation,
One that could make this sinner sing.
I thought we were written in the constellations,
But to you it didn't mean a damn thing.

Chorus

Bridge:
I hear my train comin' round,
Coming to pick me up now,
And take me far away from here...

Chorus

In that movie, "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly," the main character, a man completely paralyzed except for his left eyelid, describes a Sunday as "a desert" because there's no one around and he gets extraordinarily lonely. There's something about Sunday that, if you're lonely, it makes it so much worse. The streets are empty, nothing's open, people don't want to go too far seemingly in the fear of seeing the lonely that walks down every street on Sunday. I also figured that if any structure could get lonely, it would be a church. Most of them are only populated one day a week, while banks, offices, and stores never seem to be without people.

I’m going to try to start writing an accompanying blog with any new song I put up because several people have asked me to explain the meanings of certain songs. These are simply my own meanings, but you’re free to create your own because as they say, art is subjective.

Firecrackers is a relatively new tune. I’m still working it out, but I’ve had this fascination with people who fear getting older, which is many of us, for awhile. I guess indirectly it’s a fear of death or a fear of a world that will exist without us in it, which is a logical fear I suppose. No one wants to imagine a world in which they do not exist and yet it will happen to everyone someday. Don’t fear it. Sure you’ll probably start to look funny as you get older but think of all the fantastic things you come to know as the years pass.

Firecrackers-Adam James

Everybody wants to live forever,
Everybody thinks that they’re invincible
Everybody thinks they’re so clever,
Thinks that they’ll be the one who don’t get old.

Spend all your money buying creams
Looking for that fountain of youth
Forget it honey, it’s all in your dreams
It’s time for you to turn around and face the truth,

Chorus:
Cause we all burn like Firecrackers
Flying through the night
You can try to keep burning but it don’t matter
Cause the future is a fact that you can’t fight.

I used to fear looking at my father
Cause I see a lot of him in me
I could fight my age but why should I bother?
I hope I turn out like that when I’m 53

(chorus)

Bridge:
Everyone’s afraid of the unknown
But it’s all in our minds
What you do here don’t matter as much
As what you leave behind.

(chorus)

I don’t know if this makes anyone feel better or worse, but if you’ve ever read any of the Vampire Chronicles books that Anne Rice wrote, remember how bored some of the vampires are with eternal life. To some, getting older is a priviledge.

That's all I can say. Lots of changes, especially musically. As some of you know, I've been playing with a country band, and I'm enjoying it. It's definitely something I never thought I'd be doing with my life, but at the same time, it's poetic justice. Being a kid, going with the family for dinner to Pizza Slut (Hut), and having to sit under the radio speaker blaring all this twangy country shit.

I've been writing new songs, thinking new thoughts, having new experiences...stuff that I didn't think would happen. It's good, and it makes me uncomfortable sometimes but they say that when you're uncomfortable about a change, that means it's a good change because you're stepping outside of your comfort zone.

I'm meeting with the head of BMI in Nashville next week. Not sure anything'll come of it, but it'll be interesting nonetheless.

Anyway, that's it for now. Like Jerry used to say, "Take care of yourselves and each other.";^) Adam

Two weeks ago, I was on my way to the mall. I was sitting in the MARTA station waiting for a train and grooving to the sounds of my bro's band Assumptions Debbie (now called The Heights. Check them out: www.myspace.com/theseheights) when a guy sat down next to me looking like he wanted to talk. There were plenty of empty benches in the place, so for him to sit down next to me, I feel like he must have wanted to talk about something. For those of you that know me, you know that I'm a very social person, willing to talk to just about anybody at any time, but in this situation, I turned away, trying to avoid eye contact at all costs. He got a call on his phone (or pretended to) and got up and walked away, but it got me thinking.

The week after, I was on the train again, no iPod, and someone sat by me on the train and we got to talking. The difference was not only the iPod (or lack thereof) but also the lack of this intense desire NOT to have to talk to anyone. Granted I'm not always in a talking mood, but I feel like having the iPod on makes it worse, or makes me not want to talk at a time when I would otherwise.

Maybe i'm making more of this than there really is, but it seems that everyone is so desperate to "connect" with other people these days, and I hear so many people talk about how lonely they are, yet when they're out in the real world, they've always got headphones on, are talking on cell phones, are punching away on their laptops, etc., seemingly too busy to acknowledge their fellow human beings. Or too scared to.

I think part the problem today is that we have too many methods of escape, too many ways of forgetting that we're all human beings, that we're more the same than we are different. Too many ways of allowing technology to get between us. What's next, virtual sex??

So if you're reading this, I encourage you to stay off the iPod, the cell phone, the laptop, WHATEVER, for a day. Just try it. Talk to a stranger, at least acknowledge them in SOME way. We're afraid of each other, and for what? I'm sure some of you think I'm crazy, and maybe I am, but isn't is usually the crazy ones that turn out to be right in SOME way??

THis is a trend that was started by The Brothers Aery! I'm just a follower on this one, but it's a great idea, and I think everyone should do it! :^)

1."Dust"-Van Hunt-Van is probably my favorite new artist, everything an artist should be, and makes great music to boot! This song is one that I feel best represents him as it's a combo of soul and rock music. He did an UNBELIEVABLE version of this tune when I saw him live last weekend!

2."Pink Cashmere"-Prince-I'm sure you all know of my love for all things Prince! This is one of my favorites because it's just so damn SIMPLE but so very effective. The orchestral bits are great, the vocal is full of emotion, and there's a fantastic guitar solo at the end!

3."Jehovah Made THis WHole Joint For You"-The New Radicals-If you don't own this album, GET IT NOW! Seriously, this is an album I slept on for YEARS but has become an indispensable part of my collection in recent months. This tune is just about being happy to be alive despite all the problems in the world, something we could learn from.

4."The Shadowlands"-Ryan Adams-This is quite honestly one of the MOST beautiful songs I've ever heard. The piano just sounds HUGE and his vocal is so tender and full of emotion it almost hurts. It starts out with the piano sounding very far away, but eventually the track builds to a guitar solo at the outro. It's like watching a seed grow.

5."Frontin'"-Jamie Cullum-I love how he takes modern songs and shopworn jazz standards and breathes new life into them! This track especially! Great piano playing and the rhythm section is tight as a nun on this one!

6."Seven Days"-Sting-Poetry in motion. Sting's lyrics on this song (and many of his songs) could stand alone, and the music is so well arranged and well crafted. And for you musicians, it's also in the the most natural sounding 5/8 time you'll ever hear!

7."Money City Maniacs"-Sloan-Some good old fasioned rock'n'roll courtesy of one of Canada's greatest exports! This is a song to open your car windows and blast on full volume!

8."Flamenco Sketches"-Miles Davis-A collective of some of the greatest jazz musicians to ever live, this, the last track on Miles' "Kind Of Blue" album is so beautiful and sounds rehearsed, but was in fact the first time any of them had ever played this song.

9."Spanish Key"-Miles Davis-Some of his later era electric music. To my knowledge, no one has ever tried to emulate the style and sound of the "Bitches Brew" album, probalby because the only one who could get that sound is Miles himself!

10."Everybody Here Wants You"-Jeff BUckley-"Grace" was beauty through and through, but this is one of the best songs Buckley ever wrote. It's such an honest appraisal of loving someone who is loved by many.

11."The Light"-Common-Common makes thinking man's hip hop and does it very well. He's probably one of the most poetic hip hop artists to come along in awhile. This song is about the bond between man and woman and how it deserves more respect than it gets. It's deep and you should check it out!

12."Devil's Pie"-D'Angelo-The instruments sound murky and almost evil on this thumpin' track about how with all the sins committed the sinners have "bought a slice of the Devil's Pie."

13."Arizona Bay"-Bill Hicks-The late standup comic was revered as a "comic's comic" for his no-holds barred style of telling the truth, no matter how unpopular (read:funny!) it was! This one includes his take on LA, the LA Riots, and English porn, among other things.

14."Retaliation"-Dane Cook-Dane's 2 disc set is sure to become a standard in the pantheon of standup. The thing that makes him so different from a lot of standup comedians is that he's more of a storyteller. He repeats certain words and phrases for effect and this phrasing is as much a part of why his jokes are funny as the actual material.

15."Money Don't Matter 2nite"-Prince-In today's money hungry society, this song resonates with the message that, "Money Don't Matter 2nite, it sure didn't matter yesterday. Just when U think U got more than enough, it all up and flies away. That's when you find out that you're better off making sure your soul's all right..."

16."Portrait Of Tracy"-Jaco Pastorius-If Jaco is the Jimi Hendrix of the electric bass, then this is his Star Spangled Banner. A solo bass composition written for his first wife Tracy, he plays melody, chords, and basslines, all on 4 strings to a truly beautiful and haunting effect. It's almost guaranteed you've never heard anything like this.

17."Hot Stage Lights"-Van Hunt-A funky romp likening the flush one gets from a kiss to being in front of hot stage lights.

18."Rollout (My Business)"-Ludacris-If Common is hip hop's poet, then Ludacris is its clown prince. Luda's clever lines and well put together tracks have kept him rolling and this tune is no exception!

19."Liberty City"-Jaco Pastorius-A fantastic horn arrangement make this tune just feel GOOD! Jaco keeps it moving with a funky bassline. You just can't help but feel great when you hear it!

20."Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard"-Ryan Adams-The perfect soundtrack to winding things down. Ryan Adams shows why he is up there with some of the greatest songwriters ever. His use of the piano is so simple, yet fantastic at the same time.

If you're a band and I dont' know you, please DROP ME A NOTE AND SAY HI AT LEAST, OTHERWISE I WILL NOT ADD YOU! Chances are, those of you who didn't pay any attention to the first blog I posted regarding this dont' care anyway and are basically just friend collecting to push your shitty music, but I would hope that that is not the case. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone or that me adding you is going to enrich your life in a million different ways, but I'd like to have more on my friends list than a bunch of publicity hungry bands. If you're in a band and you're reading this, I hope you feel the same way! Have a nice day and keep rockin'. Adam
