Poi Class Description:

Whether you already know a wide number of tricks or are picking up a set of
poi for the first time ever, this class is geared toward teaching you both
the the most cutting edge ideas in poi while helping you attain full freedom
of motion to develop your own style of poi dance and expression.

If you intend to take the fall class, PLEASE register before leaving for
Burning Man as they count my attendance numbers the week of. The class will
be canceled if I do not have the minimum number of students before
then--don't wait till the last minute on this one!
Contradiction Dance is at *7014 Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park, MD.
Practice poi will be provided, but motion attire is strongly recommended.

Hoop Class Description:

This class will be based on the HoopGirl Workout format, it is suitable for
beginners or those who would like to develop their technique. We are also
considering adding an Intermediate/ Advanced class to the schedule but must
have a minimum of 5 students interested. Let me know if this is something
you would be interested in.

*WHAT IS THE HOOPGIRL® WORKOUT?*
The HoopGirl® Workout is feel-good fitness! Learn to hoop on your torso,
arms, legs, and off body in elaborate arcs, spins and jumps. Hoopdance can
help you feel full of confidence, inner radiance, power and poise. Explore
pleasure as your primary motivation for movement. You learn how to navigate
using feeling instead of sight or thought -- becoming responsive, breathing
deeply, and creating fluid transitions. Special attention is given to
micromovements of the body, working with the downbeat, freeing the head,
unleashing your own style. Guidance for performance given throughout class.
Free yourself in ecstatic undulation, experiment with vocal release, and
express attitude and spunk! Team-building activities build a sense of
community and create laughter. Performance opportunities allow us each to
shine and feel appreciation and joy. A variety of music -- from electronic
house music, R&B to classical and world music will provide a rich tapestry
of sound for your dance.
*What is covered in the HoopGirl® Workout for Beginners?*
No experience neccessary! The extended class time in this series allows for
lots of one-on-one attention and detailed instruction. You will explore
dancing while hooping, with ample time to master moves. Each day is devoted
to increasing awareness in a different part of the body while working with a
specific principle of hoopdance.

*About ME: *Surprise! (aka Katie Desmond) has been spreading her love and
joy of hooping for over six years. A California native, she has wowed
audiences across the United States with her campy, fun and theatrical style
of hoop and fire dance. In 2009, she was nominated for Fire Hooper of the
Year by Hooping.org. Katie is a licensed HoopGirl Level 1 teacher who
believes that she can teach anyone to hoop. Surprise! is available for
performances and private workshops and events. She also designs colorful
custom made hoops.

Fire Dance Choreography Class Description:

Have you been itching to become part of a rehearsing team that produces
clockwork precision and heart wrenching theatrics with fire? If so, I'd like
to draw your attention to a 12 class course Dance Afire is offering
during the fall session with that very goal in mind. At the end of the
course the participants will be crafted into an independent,
performance crew, ready to ply their trade for fun and profit.

Crafting and performing choreo is an entirely different creature than our
normal ecstatic fire play. The first requirement to make such a team come
together is a consistent and comfortable rehearsal space. Next you need a
leader with the vision and patience to herd you burning cats towards that
vision. I have those ingredients in spades. The last and most important
ingredient is your dedication. Mix those three elements and together we will
craft DC's newest fire dance sensation.

All levels welcome, the first and most important requirement is that you own
your fire tools

All-

I'm back from the exotic land of New Orleans where everything tastes
of spices and catfish and ready to close out our Fall poi classes. A
big thanks to everyone who has come out and been patient not only as
we've ironed out the format but also as I've thrown more drills at
them than the hardware department of a Walmart (note to self: similes
involving Walmart are never funny). I'm told Lou led an excellent
class last week as my sub and a big thanks to him for doing so, but
now it's time to say goodbye to all our company...

So this is the week it all comes together. This is the week I'll show
you what all our crazy drills add up to, guiding you guys to exotic
tricks like behind-the-back weaves, crossers, and a whole bunch of
things you can do with isolations, plus a preview of some advanced
stuff that will amaze your friends and confuse your enemies. If you've
come to any of our classes, this will be the one you'll want to show
up for.

Class is this Thursday, December 17th at Contradiction Dance at 7014
Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park, MD. You've still got one day to get a
$10 class out of us, so I'd take us up on it. Otherwise it'll be $15
at the door.

Finally, we're trying to figure out how best to work poi classes in
the Spring--that's right, the class has been such a success that we're
going to start back up in January. What will these classes look like?
Well, we want your input on this.

If you've got time, fill out a quick survey for us at:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=8CMT0qh_2bdHeJI0Bm_2b2HWfQ_3d_3d

It doesn't matter if you've taken the class or not, we'd love to hear
from you about how to make the class the most effective for the local
community. Thanks so much guys!

Peace,
Drex and the Dance Afire crew
