Hello Blood Lake Haunted House fans.  Here's a quick summer update of what we've been up to:

- We've been gathering a group of volunteer zombies from last years cast to help promote Blood Lake and have called ourselves the Zombie Squad.  We've gone to Rollergirl bouts, Regal cinema movie premieres, and had movie nights together.  More events are coming up in July and August.  Check our Facebook page for the calendar:  Blood Lake on Facebook

- Our sister business, Haunts of Richmond Ghost Tours (http://www.hauntsofrichmond.com), has begun giving tours in Richmond's famous Shockoe Bottom for 2009 and celebrating our 5th Anniversary!  We're also planning a Haunted Pub Crawl once a month for the rest of the summer, and a production at the end of July called "Midsummer Night's Scream."

Tickets can be purchased for Scream at: http://shop.hauntedrichmond.com/
Tickets for the tours can be purchased here:  http://www.zerve.com/Haunts

Blood Lake and Haunts also just hosted an Undead Ball this weekend at Que Pasa Restaurant.  This was our official KICK OFF for the 2009 season with all our business partners/sponsors and local media contacts.  Pictures of the event can be found on our Facebook Page:  Blood Lake on Facebook

Finally... about the haunt itself.  Last week we finished the new design for our outdoor trail.  All I can say is... Wow!  It's going to be amazing.  Can't wait to get started. Here's an exclusive hint from the script just for our Myspace friends.  Check this out:

Pretty cool, eh?  We'll finish up the redesigned indoor attractions very soon.

Oh, and have you been following us on Twitter?!?  http://www.twitter.com/bloodlakeva

That's it for now!  Until next time...

Haunted Attractions, also known as, Halloween Haunted Houses, are actually a one billion dollar industry in the United States. Last year, polls indicated that on average, nearly 19% of Americans including visiting a Haunted Attraction in their plans for celebrating Halloween!

To get an idea of how many haunts there are across the country, visit hauntedhouse.com and take a look at the haunt directory. I think you'll be impressed (not necessarily with Virginia - check out Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania for instance).

Many of us remember going to charity haunted houses when we were kids: Black plastic or sheets hanging from the ceilings, kindly looking volunteers and bored teenagers in jeans and masks saying boo. Spaghetti worms and grape eyeballs. I'm here to tell you that the haunted attraction industry has grown and matured tremendously since then.

In St. Louis, Sandi, Ryan, Nick and I had the opportunity to visit three professional haunted attractions, including The Darkness, which is over 40,000 square feet of fun, packed with scores of actors, the most amazingly detailed sets and state-of-the art animations.

Haunted Attractions are a very specialized form of theatrical entertainment, and consist of the same elements that make up a staged theatrical production: Actors, Sets, Props, Sound, Lighting and Special Effects. Like any specialty, haunt production comes with its own set of challenges in all of these areas.

Haunted Attraction Conventions allow professional haunters to converge and see the latest products and technology used to assist in creating the ideal haunted environment. Typically the show room floor is full of vendors displaying amazing animatronics, costumes, masks, props, special effects, illusions, show control devices and a host of supporting services for ticketing, insurance, advertising and the like.

In addition to the vendor displays, a series of seminars is presented by leading haunt operators covering a diverse set of business topics including safety, marketing, sponsorship, crowd control, event theming, actor training, attraction design, and product-specific demonstrations of lighting, sound and control systems.

As part of our new Central Virginia Haunted House Enthusiasts group, the four Transworld attendees from Blood Lake Haunted House plan to put together a presentation of the trends and concepts they saw at Transworld (and the upcoming National Haunters Convention in Pennsylvania). Our goal is to continue to build the fan base for haunted houses here in the Old Dominion.

If you like haunted houses or the horror genre, please add Blood Lake Haunted House on Facebook or join our CVHHE group, and invite your friends too! And if you haven't been to a haunted attraction in a while, give one a try this October.

Here we go again!  Time to start planning for the 2009 haunt season.  Fortunately for us we don't have to worry about securing a location and we also have about a 4 or 5 month head start on last year!  We've already begun committee meetings with our design and marketing teams and have a ton of ideas and some really exciting news for this season... but you'll have to wait until April to find that out!    I do have one announcement to report, though...  the fab four of Scott, Sandi, Nick, and myself (Ryan) will be traveling to St. Louis, MO on March 27th-29th for Transworld's 14th National Haunt & Attractions Show.  There we'll be going to several seminars throughout the weekend, and also be able to experience 3 haunts in the area:  Fearfest and Necropolis in Columbia, MO... and the #2 ranked Haunted House in America for 2008... The Darkness.  We can't wait!  Updates galore will follow.  Until then, enjoy some new promos for Blood Lake '09...

The 2008 season has come and gone.  We had an amazing experience in our first year with Blood Lake.  Thanks so much to everyone in Richmond and around the country that made the trip!  We look forward to next year as we expand and grow the haunt.  Stay tuned for updates starting in 2009.  See you next year!
