What a time it was.  Beautiful women everywhere.  I was in awe of all the talent and creativity that filled Out of the Blue and the mild springy Sundy of 4/19.  So much love and so much feeling.  The night opened up with the poetic gems of Shannon Walsh who made helped us all laugh and remember love lost.  I think she was the one who said the awesome line about "tears on a pillow pretending it's your drool."  Then we had some fun, funky, lesbian rock from Janet Connerney and the Enablers, more poetry from Deborah Priestly, and a strong and beautiful set from Jordan Clements.  Jordan was so good she made people cry.  Some of my favorite poetry came next from featured poet Sarah Tourjee.  She was just dang good.  Bethel Steel played the next set and had everyone rocking and near-dancing with her catchy music.  My favorite song was that one about looking like a beautiful boy.  I f-ing love that song!  Next Charli Henley graced us all with her personal, emotive, and moving poetry.  It leaves you breathless.  Finally it was Brief Awakening's turn to rock and we pulled out the stops with our most upbeat jams.  Last was Mo Pepin who really shone in this setting with soft clear vocals, etherial harmonics, and creative guitar work.  Thanks so much to Tom and Out of the Blue for hosting us and making Goddess Fest possible.  Thanks to Jackie for helping me make this idea a reality.  Thanks to all you beautiful performers and artists.  An extra special love-laden thanks to all those who came to support local art and music with your beautful selves and your generous donations.  You are the ones who make it all happen.  I can't wait to do it again.

Brief Awakening with Bethel Steele at the Midway Café,
Jamaica Plain March 12 2009.

The night opened up with Bethel Steele with one pedal and her acoustic guitar. Kind of started off for a low key night. But she turned it into slapstick with her humor between songs and sweetness of lyrical sanity. A little more variety in the instrumentation would be okay, instead of just chords because it bordered on the edge of repetitive.

Brief Awakening. What can I say. Soothing and great. There I said it. I was excited to see a full set from them, and a full crowd to boot. I was not disappointed. The songs are energetic, positive and driven with substantial depth behind each chord and note. The layering of vocals and instrumentation is likened to a Belle and Sebastian sort of moodiness with a soothing taste but with a gritty side that leaves the listener hanging on.

When you see a band and you envision yourself from outside walking past the club and thinking “who is that playing inside cause they are damn good I wanna hear more” you know you’re in the right place. And I definitely felt that way about Brief Awakening. It was a great time. They have a MySpace page so go find them. Go check them out live it’s awesome. And if I was to pick two radio ready songs, I would have to say Footprints and Recognition which are both on their site. So go there. Now.

Two shows in two short weeks.  What a blast this has been. The first show was on 2/1 during the superbowl.  Brief Awakening likes to compete with major sporting events.  That was really the greatest show ever.  What a glorious attentive audience of chill, funk-rocking, dudes we had.  The energy was incredible.  Kara and I played our little hearts out and broke out some new songs for the first time.  The second Midway rock fest was last night Thursday 2/12.  In some ways it was the most gratifying show we ever played.  Beloved bartender, and part time genius, Ange was largely to thank for the nights smoothness and good vibes.  Also, thanks to Dave for showing up and making us sound perfect.  Then it was fabulous to get out there and play for a bunch of gay ladies like ourselves.  Hanging around for Queereoke was the ultimate, ready-made after party.

 ....

Thanks to all the lovers and thrill seekers who came out to rock and support: Bekki-our soon to be bass player, Death-our artists in residence, Al Polk-our label representative and manager, Dave for booking and excellent sound, Ange, Kailin, Melissa, Lauren, Alyssa, Megan, Beth, The Lawn Boys, Paradigm Twilight, Grace, and all the other beautiful people.

Last night...what a pleasure fest.  I ask myself, "what wasn't great about last night?" I answer, "nothing."  In short, everything about last night was great.  It was a freakishly warm December night and Kara, Iliya, and I were dressed in our best 1970s thrift store finery (see: velour sport jacket, polyester yellow shirt).  The stage setup at the Beachcomber is shockingly great with a huge stage and experienced sound guy.  First up was The Mirror Nuerons sounding like a chainsaw in love and rocking up a storm.  Then we played a solid set for a rapt audience of Awakened Ones who sat beatifically on the dance floor and were inspired to have deep thoughts and reevaluate their lives.  Our music was described by two fans as, "Fiona Apple meets awesome!"  Then, Kid Romance, headlined the night with killer screamings from zombi-dance extraordinaire frontman Lucy, and smashing drumming from Julian.  Superstar Niki Romance DJd the evening with unusual skill and taste.

Special thanks to Al ( you magnificent freak) and Polk Records for organizing and PRing the evening.  Thanks to the Beachcomber for hosting and for two dollar rum drinks.  Thanks to all you Awakened Ones new and old: Mera, her brother, John and Lorraine, All the Kidz from Kid Romance,  The boys of The Mirror Neurons, Marley, Tim, Jamison, Amy, The Beast of England.  Special thanks to Steve and M.J. because they came to show the love and got turned away at the door.  A very extra special thanks to all you who I met, loved, and forgot your names because my brain is too sleep deprived.  We shall meet again.

What a night of uncontrollable musical expulsion raucous rocking and...football.  We entered the bar and said to ourselves, "holy shit there are like 200 people in here..! and they are all watching the Pats game."  Little did those football fans know, they would soon be simaltaniously enjoying the music of Brief Awakening.  Sure enough, we did rock amid the cheers of dedicated Brief Awakened Ones and some others who dug us.  Plus we were enhanced by the talents of Brief Awakening's newest member, the elegant and talented Iliya who brings Sitar and Style to every show.

Much love and thanks to all you Brief Awakened Ones: Jeff Savlon, Jim Delorey, Kevin, Dave, Melissa, Zion, Al of Straight Angular and Polk Records (our label), Gemma, Jen of "Me and Joan Collins" Dylan and Julian of "Kid Romance."  Thanks to Dave for booking us and Orleans Bar and Restaurant for hosting us and providing that delicious whisky.  See you next time.

The rain poured down last Thursday, but that did not stop the night from dancing to the intoxicating sounds of The Few, Brief Awakening, and Pete Crowley and the Mirror Neurons at All Asia Bar.  I love Cambridge, home of many debaucheries, escapades, and my alma matter Lesley U.  I was glad to finally play a show there, and to see the local friends of music turning out to support creativity.  The Few rocked and rolled and sang and jammed like the pros that they are.  Pete Crowley and his Mirror Neurons were electric with their unique drunk-rock stylings.  We in Brief Awakening filled the room with emotion and the deep brightness of piano, dark guitar, and dancing djembe.  Thanks to everyone who came and everyone who wanted to be there.  I'll drink to All Asia and the interesting Martin Doyle of MFD Booking for his bartending prowess and useful conversation.  Thanks to Marc for booking us, The Few, Pete Crowley and the Mirror Neurons, Al from Straight Angular, Bryan and all his ladies, Marlon Braddock, Anne Jenkins,  Merideth, and everyone else who came around and stuck around to make the night fabulous.  I love you all.

Brief Awakening's Halloween madness truly began that Saturday October 18th night in lonely Lynn at the Gulu Gulu.  It took some time to figure out about how to use the PA, but we used our mutual intelligence to find the switch on the back.  Then the show was a success thanks to the support of friends, fans, and lovely bartenders.  There was music, laughter, talking, and drinking, rocking, and thinking.

Special thanks to Leah, Rhiannon, and Ashton for driving all the way from Somerville.  Thanks to January, Dave, the beautiful and entertaining staff of the Gulu Lynn, and of course, Steve for booking us.  Thanks to all we forgot to mention.  See you all next time!

The night was cool and moist with threats of hurricanes.  Kara and I dragged our fresh instruments out into the night for a Saturday night rock fest that moved hearts to rhythmic beating and had hands clapping.  Brief Awakening beat drums, banged keys, slammed guitar, and sang sweetly for all the music enthusiasts who weren't afraid of the dark or the storm.  We were followed by some lovely folk singing and guitar.  Finally Pete Crowley and his drummer friend ended the night with a steel guitar wailing and drunks dancing.  Thanks to all those who braved the rain to come out.  Special thanks to Dave Simmons for recording the whole thing and making this myspace music possible.

 Next time I'll still be,
