Female Asian Artist Sees Beauty In Gay Black Rapper
Contemporary social change artist Zhang has made Asian-American and Anglo-American men subjects for seven years. Her thesis -- tenderness and responsiveness as vibrant parts masculinity, inverts the male gaze and portrays Juba’s inner truths using photographs, marks and words. The community is warmly invited to a panel discussion about the "JUBA-SPIDER" print edition with health organizers and art critics at Apache Café
(www.apachecafe.info/event.php?display=event&id=3991&date=2009-Jul-13&returnto=month) in Atlanta on July 13, 2009.
Charles Stephens (AID Atlanta), Felicia Feaster (The Atlantan) and Cinque Hicks (Creative Loafing),in addition to artist JENNY ZHANG and moderator Karen Fain (Apache Café),openly talk about
1. Challenges gay identity makes to black masculinity
2. Women making art about men
Charles Stephens (born and raised in Atlanta and organizer of a HIV prevention program for black gay men), Felicia Feaster (film critic with a masters degree from Emory University),and Cinque Hicks (art critic and current graduate student at Georgia Tech), dispel myths and share published knowledge.
The “JUBA-SPIDER” edition will be displayed and available for sale at Apache Café through August 10. Innovative traditional and digital printmaking techniques in the monoprint can be viewed earlier that weekend at an opening of a group show on July 11 at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio (www.atlantaprintmakersstudio.org/exhibits.html), a non-profit protecting the art medium from extinction.
Over four hand-printed layers of monoprint (including hand-made type, stencil and collagraph techniques) are meticulously overlaid on each of the eight paper panels in “JUBASPIDER” which together span 20 feet. The artwork is a result of the inaugural Emerging Artist Residency and will be displayed and available for sale through August 1.
“JUBA-SPIDER” is part of ZHANG’S "MEN ARE LIKE FASCINATING INSECTS" bodyof work combining the beauty, intricacy and iridescence ZHANG fortuitously discovered in 2001, with the beauty, expressiveness and creativity ZHANG has always loved about men. The artist has lived between Atlanta, New York, California and China and received her BA from Stanford University. Find out why ZHANG makes art at

...with ya boy Juba K as one of the special feature commentaries. I'm humbled as fuck. http://www.frameline.org ----------------- Dir. Marlon T. Riggs 1989 55 min USA Pre-Order Your Copy Now! DVDs will ship on March 18th. The stories are fierce examples of homophobia and racism: the man refused entry to a gay bar because of his color; the college student left bleeding on the sidewalk after a gay-bashing; the loneliness and isolation of the drag queen. Yet they also affirm the black gay male experience: protest marches, smoky bars, "snap diva," humorous "musicology" and vogue dancers. Bonus Features Include: Newly Released Deleted Scenes & Outtakes 1991 Interview with Director Marlon T. Riggs Interviews with: Isaac Julien, Filmmaker Phill Wilson, AIDS Activist Juba Kalamka, Spoken Word Artist Herman Gray, Cultural Critic "A black male warrior fighting for the right to love other black men, Marlon Riggs affirms what was nearly lost, newly found: the certainty that black male lives are utterly precious." —Alice Walker, Author, The Color Purple "My struggle has allowed me to transcend that sense of shame and stigma identified with my being a black gay man. Having come through that fire, they can't touch me." —Marlon T. Riggs * Los Angeles Film Critics Award * *Best Documentary, Berlin Film Festival *

"a talk show San Francisco-style...delivers genuine conversation." - SF Weekly
"frequently funny...[n]o talking heads, no sniping, no snarking. -San Francisco Chronicle
"utterly inspiring" - Rhodessa Jones, founder Media Project
Comedian Heather Gold reinvents the talk show live from San Francisco and Luscious Garage. Heather puts 3 diverse guests up on the lift (literally!) and looks under the hood with the audience around a theme.
Friday October 12th Along with guest Dale Dougherty, founder of MAKE magazine, Carolyn Coquilette, who learned how to fix her own car and is now owner and chief mechanic of Luscious Garage, America's first green, hybrid- only garage and rapper/performer Juba Kalamka, who created his own record label and festival (Sugartruck Recordings and the Peace Out HomoHop Festival), and the people formerly known as the audience (thats you), I conversate about Doin' It Yourself.
Why is it so damn satisfying? What is better left to pros? Is poverty the only thing that gets us to DIY? Is it just a new hipster name for a hobby or a mindset that is our best hope for a better life than GloboCorp can give us? What have you done yourself recently?
Show: 8-9:30
Afterparty: 9:30-11:00
