Sometimes you just have to be naughty. The urge takes over and you lose control. The question becomes, what to do about it? For many women around Chicago, they take the stage late into the night and unleash their inner sex kitten. Burlesque is back in full force in Chicago, you just have to know where to find it.

Friday night the girls of the Varietease Cabaret strutted their stuff for an audience ready to let get as wild as the dancers. In the small and intimate setting of the Lakeshore Theater anything goes. Watching good cabaret isn’t like going to a strip club. The purpose is not so much to seduce as it is to entertain. In this cabaret, the girls are in control. Just spend five minutes with MC Backdoor Aly and you will get pulled into the rush of the experience. Aly spent half the night dressed in a tight leather nurses outfit flirting with the crowd and fellow dancers alike. The dancers themselves come in all different shapes and sizes. Every fetish got its fair share of attention Friday night. Varietease simultaneously pays homage to the cabarets of old and drags it into the 21st century. For every feather dance there was a heavy metal/punk rock striptease. Some acts just stand out in your mind. Dizzy Lizzie Delicious’s hoola hoop act was enthralling, the tricks that she did with her hoops took serious skill. The same can be said of Miss Tamale and her fire dancing. With the lights turned all the way Tamale grooved and grinded as she twirled two large fireballs around her body. No clothes came off but they didn’t have to. There was something primal about the dance; it was impossible to look away. As if watching women strut their stuff late into the night wasn’t enough to get your engine going, the music for the night was provided by The Lusties. The band is one of the most solid Chicago punk bands out there and perfect for burlesque. Most songs deal with S&M or sex toys, standard topics for the night. Lead singer Edie is the female love child of Joey Ramone and Alice Cooper. Every song rocks the house unmercifully. Watching them as an intermission act did not give the band nearly the respect that they deserve. If you get a chance see them play a full set, you won’t be disappointed. The face of cabaret may have changed but it is back in full force in the city. Varietease is just one of about a dozen burlesque companies in and around Chicago. These girls are wild, sassy and know how to have fun. So take the chance, unleash your wild side and check out Varietease. | ..
