Current mood:  amused
Category: Music
Tuesday, January 6
7 pm Eastern Cowgirl Time

My apartment has Satanic-grade, uncontrollable heating--thankfully paid for by my landlord. When I walked into my apartment just now, it was about 80 degrees. I am not exactly complaining, though I do worry about the little guitars. If you are ever sad and cold and maybe feel like wearing hot pants in January, just give me a holler.

Last night at 3 am, I woke from a dead sleep to the sound of the old-fashioned radiator in my living room sputtering and spitting. I guess personal overheating had triggered a dream about "solving a case" regarding some kind of mojo death object on Willie Nelson's tour bus. [Don't ask me, I just work here.] As I pondered the ghostly origins of the mojo death object (was it a haunted potato chip? an unholy pick guard? these things remain unanswered in the waking hours) the dream slipped away from me, leaving me sweatily tossing on the flannel sheets listening to the clanging pipes. I was, and am now, left with a deeply unsettled feeling. Whatever this thing was, it was not to be messed with. What was it? What did it do?

This is 2009, folks ... 2009. Clairvoyant in all directions. Mysterious. Full of intrigue. Frightening, and yet interesting.

Fitting that this weekend I'm playing a solo show with Elisa Flynn, my friend and fellow former member of Jargon Society. Come celebrate January and Elisa's CD release of "Songs About Birds & Ghosts". Elisa's got an uncanny ability to inhabit her song-characters' thoughts. Her songs are dark, funny, and COOL. What more can I say?

Brother Mike and I recorded Silent Night for you last week. I hope you enjoy. I had delusions of grandeur of doing much more, but a simple, quick take is what we had time for. I hope you like it.

Wishing you the healthiest, happiest, sanest holiday,
Lys

Dream Magazine Issue Number 7 includes a lovely little review of Three Songs. Plus it's chock full of interesting interviews with Ivor Cutler, Josephine Foster, Sharron Kraus, St. Mary's, and all kinds of other psych/folk/rock/unclassifiable artists I haven't gotten to reading about yet. Plus it comes with a CD, so you can hear some of the bands who are featured in interviews/profiles/etc. I suggest you get into it.

~Shoot Out the Lights~

Last week, my friend David and I were in his house and he handed me a .28 two shot rifle to shoot indoors. In August, I had taken a shooting lesson for my birthday, and this was the kind of rifle I used. He had just gotten it for fun in his backyard out in the country, and he wanted me to try it. I said, "Are you sure?" and he said, "Why not? It's ok, no one's home." So I shot some holes in his ceiling.

(tryptophan induced dream, for sure)

~Comps~

Ukulele and So Can I compilation cassette is out now on Lost Sound Tapes. Many original interesting songs, based around the lil' ukulele. Hand stamped cover, and bargain. We're talkin' $5 or less.

Also, I believe there are still copies of the Skeeter Davis comp, titled Homebreaker, available from Sanitary Records. The case for this is a box with a three-color silkscreen of Skeeter Davis. A wonderful object, and I'm glad to be included. (There will be a winter compilation out early next year from Sanitary, and with any luck I will have a brand new song on it.)

~Jargon Society Reunion~

This Friday December 8, Jargon Society, my band from 2000-2001 is reuniting for one show at the Monkey Bar in Danbury, CT. Also playing will be School Safety Patrol, Sans Cherubs, Kiss Kiss, and Bombay Soul Shop. The show starts at 9 and costs $5, 21+.

~Holidays @ Cowgirl Central~

If you need craft or homemade gift advice, please drop a line. I especially love to think of the impossible and the ridiculous. Staff engineers and artisans are waiting to help you. Independent music is a good gift idea, too. I could point you to some good deals by friends and associates.

The Sanitary Records cassette comp Homebreaker, a tribute to Skeeter Davis, is now available for preorder (shipping soon). The cassette comes in a really cool looking hand-silkscreened box/case.

On my track I fake sister harmonies and play the lap steel, among other things. It's still a fairly straight take on the tune. Apparently, doing your own harmony vocals was an idea kind of pioneered by Chet Atkins, who produced some of Skeeter's recordings. Well thanks, Chet.

Side A:
Emily Jane Powers - "The End of the World"
Colin Clary - "Let Me Get Close to You"
The Faintest Ideas "My Last Date with You"

Side B:
Lys Guillorn - "I Can't Help You (I'm Falling Too)"
