Comedy Death-Ray, Los Angeles's premier comedy show, is venturing out into the world of producing. They have signed two content deals with major comedy providers, with plans to put out both a CD and produce several internet series.
CDR, as it is known, has been the best comedy show in Los Angeles for almost five years, with its legendary all-night anniversary shows and galvanization of the LA "alternative" comedy scene. Comedy Death-Ray showcases both veteran stand-up comedians as well as new talent every Tuesday night at LA's Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
"Our show has been the best in LA for a long time. But we wanted to share this pool of talent with a few more people than the 150 or so who get to see the show each week," said CDR co-creator Scott Aukerman. "We know so many brilliant people who need an outlet in which to perform, branching out into producing is just a natural fit."
First up, to highlight CDR's stand-up comedy roots, Comedy Central records will put out a Comedy Death-Ray CD later this summer. Taped both at the UCB Theatre in Los Angeles during the fourth anniversary all-night show, and in San Francisco during CDR's special SF Sketchfest show, the double-disc set will showcase the best comedians performing today. Expected to appear on the disc are alternative comedy luminaries David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, Neil Hamburger, Maria Bamford and more.
Comedy Death-Ray has also inked a deal to produce special internet "series" for website Super Deluxe. CDR will produce an unnamed amount of episodes for three different series, including "Lake Charles Lake," a humorous soap opera created by Martha Kelly and Tom Sharpe, and "The Fun Bunch," starring Comedy Death-Ray creators Scott Aukerman & BJ Porter.
"Comedy Death-Ray isn't just about stand-up," explains Aukerman. "Most of the comics working with us have great show ideas that, for whatever reason, networks just aren't buying. The internet allows them a place to prove that they're not crazy – these ideas are funny and have value."
Super Deluxe, for their part, is very excited to be working with the brand. "I am thrilled to have Comedy Death-Ray as a part of Super Deluxe," says Super D's Dan Pasternack. "Not just for what the brand represents but for the writing, producing and performing talents of Scott and B.J. as well. I have worked with them in the past and they are among the funniest and most gifted guys I know. Their live shows have always reflected their devotion to the art of comedy and I'm certain that the pieces they produce for Super Deluxe will have the same spirit."
Comedy Death-Ray creators Scott Aukerman & BJ Porter are LA-based screenwriters who have worked on TV series like Mr. Show, and co-written movies such as Run Ronnie Run and Shark Tale. As actors, they have appeared in projects like The Sarah Silverman Program, Austin Powers: Goldmember, and Malcolm in the Middle. Recently, they penned the script Kanan Rhodes: Unkillable Servant of Justice for MTV Films.

Okay, here are some details about the on sale...
Tickets will be on sale THIS SATURDAY at 12 noon. This way anyone who has a weekday job should be free and be able to be near a computer.
Go to ComedyDeathRay.com. Precisely at noon, a show poster will appear giving you the details of the event. Click on the poster, and you will be taken to a page on the UCB website. There, you will find a Paypal link to buy tix.
Tickets are still only TWENTY DOLLARS! How do we do it? I don't even know. I think there will be a Paypal service charge, but it's nothing like the eight dollars a ticket Ticketmaster charges. I think it's a little over a dollar or something.
So if you want to get tickets the second they become available, make sure you set up a PayPal account before Saturday afternoon. It's pretty easy, you just need a credit card.
Aside from possibly going to the UCB box office, this will be the ONLY WAY to buy tickets.
The first year we did it, the tickets sold out in a little over a week. Last year they sold out in a little over a day. This year, I'm not sure... we have way more people into it than ever before. If I were you, I would make sure you're on a computer this Saturday so you can take part in what is probably the last time we're ever going to do this!!
Oh, and in that spirit, since it's probably the last time -- WE'RE GOING TWO MORE HOURS. 8pm-6am. And there's some cool shit that's happening -- trust me.
Okay, that's it -- if you have any questions, post them here and I'll try to answer when I get a second!
