“First Food Love” Contest Starts Here: read below!

firdt food love contest

Last week Rich and I went to Paris basically to eat! Rich had never been there before and in celebration of our anniversary, we thougparisht it was time. The city was lit up for the holidays and it was romantic and breath-taking. The branches of the trees lining the Champs-Elysees were decorated with pale blue lights in the shape of champagne flutes. The weather was cold, but being true northerners we loved it! The people were lovely, welcoming and helpful. We visited the Mona Lisa; we took a ferris wheel ride at dusk; we ate lunch in the Eiffel Tower, and we drank delicious wine! (More about the restaurants after the contest rules)

“First Food Love” Contest- Play Now!

Ok so now onto the contest, titled, “First Food Love.” Below is a picture of Rich enjoying his first Parisian Nutella Banana Crepe. Watching him bite into that heavenly dough and seeing the smile that arose from his face was fabulousfirst crepe bite ! It instantly reminded me of my first crepe in Paris. crepe smile

I was 15, wearing a motorcycle jacket and a new scarf I just bought on the street, and I remember that first gooey sweet bite of warm chocolate hitting my lips. I knew I had just tasted perfection!

In honor of Valentine’s Day and all the reasons to love in this world, Alexandra’s Cookie Dreams is proud to launch “First Food Love Contest.” Here are the details:cookies

In the “comments” section of this blog, please tell us about the first time you, your child or loved one tasted something delicious. What you ate, where you were and what you loved about it. So share a memory and taste the sweetness of life!

Paris Hit List:

Now, back to Paris. While there is so much to do, see, and eat in Paris, we only had four days so here’s my must hit list.

L’Ami Louis: This famous Parisian brasserie has been around since the 1930’s but it is the quaint size and “those who know” attitude that make it legendary, as well as louis!incredibly hard to get into. That being said, I knew my friend, Insatiable Critic, Gael Greene has been writing about this restaurant for decades, check out her reviews,  Winter Travel: Paris Review (October 200menu3) & Eating Up Paris (September 2004). Even though our concierge at our hotel didn’t have enough clout, I thought Ms. Greene probably did.  I was correct, Louis told Ms. Greene to have us come that night. Pouf, we were in! I already felt like a celebrity just to have a table. Upon our entering, Louis (photo above) continued our fantasy of being important foodies by greeting us with a hug, a kiss and two glasses of champagne. I knew I liked it there. We ordered oysters, foie gras (it was the fireating foie grasst time I ever ate it and I didn’t stop eating it for three days) the much talked about roasted chicken, potatoes, and a delicious red wine. The crowd was a mix of fashionable international jet setters and local Parisian couples. It was such a memorable night, I completely understand why it is coveted as a must go!

32 Rue du Vert-Bois, 3e

Le Table de Joel Robuchon: This is Joel Robuchon’s second more modern restaurant in Paris. Upon entering I felt like I stumbled upon a 1980’s hotel lobby, perhaps owned by Trump. Everything is black and shiny gold, with basically no windows to view the cozy Parisian street. It felt a bit stiff for Rich and I. However once I got passed the unexpected ambiance, and settled into our seats with a lovely wine (I know nothing about wine, nor will I pretend to, so lovely means it tasted good) the food was outrageous. We had three dishes from the shared dish menu, which included perfectly cooked scallops resting on a cushion of truffle penne. What could be bad! We decided to skip dessert there, although the waiter brought us sublime caramel infused chocolates, and we headed for drinks at the George V Hotel. Probably one of the most famous fancy hotels in Paris, and she knows it. The staff has the “we know your touristy type” and “I guess we must tolerate it” attitude. Regardless, the bar was crowded and I had my first Parisian Pastis. A licorice tasting drink (contains star anise) with alcohol, sugar and some spices, that is served with a carafe of water, to be mixed in. I felt sophisticated and festive ordering it, but later it just kind of made me nauseous.

16, Avenue Bugeaud

Jules Verne: Alain Ducasse’s restaurant in the Eiffel Tower more than 400 feet above ground. Obviously the views are spectacular, and we were lucky to have lunch there on a very clear day. The experience of entering the Eiffel Tower through a private entrance and taking a quiet elevator up to the restaurant was exciting and built the anticipation of the forthcoming experience. Our concierge recommended that we dress up for this lunch, so I wore a skirt and blouse and Rich wore a suit. Clearly, he was wrong. Most people were in sneakers and jeans, and we felt slightly ridiculous. But on to the food, as expected the lunch was decadent, filled with show stopping presentations and superb service. We opted for the chef’s tasting menu and we were thrilled. Rich and I started with foie gras (again!) and then I had the sea bass and Rich had thejules verne kitchen Special Of The Day, rabbit. Everything was cooked and presented perfectly. The only disappointment was dessert, an area that I personally scrutinize at every restaurant; field research you know? We had the vanilla souffle, a rum coated cake (I don’t know the fancy name for it) and some ice cream. All of which were a bit over done for my taste, too many ingredients, but I’m a simple dessert lover.

....2e étage de la Tour Eiffel

01-45-55-61-44 Hotel Fouguet’s Barriere: All I can say is if I ever live in Paris, I hope my home looks like our room! This hotel was built two years ago on the corner of Champs-Elysees and Avenue George Vhotel. It is an incredible mix of modern amenities (flat screens in the bedroom and bathroom, computer charger attached to the inside of the safe) and old world Parisian charm (high ceilings, three sets of double doors that open onto a terrace overlooking the Champs-Elysees). The service was impeccable and every detail was considered. They even have a sexy zen spa & fitness center, with a swimming pool and a relaxation pool on the basement level, perfect after walking around for 8 hours in the freezing cold.

46, Avenue George v

Oh and the pastries and bread! I’m leaving you with this final thought, chocolate brioche! It is definitely time for me to hit the gym!

Don’t forget to share a “First Food Love” right here on this blog’s comments page and enter to win 2 dozen free Alexandra’s Cookie Dreams cookies in time for Valentine’s Day for you or for someone else. (Details above).

Thanks for letting me relive my Paris trip with you!

Welcome to the "Unofficial" start of Fall! This week at ACD we will be debuting our new "Back-to-School" gift packages to give a "sweet" start to the school year and all your tailgating parties. Sign up for our Enewsletter, "The ACD Cookie Scoop", to receive a private code for a discount on the "Back-to-School" cookie package reserved only for our Enewsletter subscribers

This weekend Rich and I were in Remsenburg (a small enclave near Westhampton, NY) visiting my family at their country home. We are a food obsessed family and weekends spent in the Hamptons feeds directly into this obsession. We have a "country kitchen" big enough for the family to gather and two refrigerators and garage to stock supplies, all of which are a fantasy that fades like summer when they return to their NYC apartments. My family loves to discuss the "menu", shop for food, cook, grill, entertain and EAT! The combination of my dad (who is his teens owned his own luncheonette, named Irene's in the Catskill Mountains and makes a mean Chigramy (email me for this recipe) and my younger sister Alana's boyfriend Aaron, whose gourmand skills please both the foodie and non-foodie alike, made for an incredible food fest! Let's say Rich and I have taken a welcomed break from our standard Whole Foods salad bar dinner in Austin.

Some of my favorite dishes of the weekend: Daddy Alan's BBQ chicken and beef with his secret sauce (of course before moving to Texas, I was a BBQ neophyte, I didn't know the difference between this type of Hamptons BBQ and Kreitz Lockhardt. Now I know, it's about 500 calories and Texas family heirloom coals.) August corn in the Hamptons, simply cooked or grilled, is one of nature's greatest gifts, sweet, plump, a perfectly pale shade of yellow. The farm stands out there (my favorite being Harbes Family Farm on the South Fork) roast the corn to perfection in the husk, then you can roll them in butter (or Molly McButter - which I'm not afraid to openly state that I love) and salt and pepper on a white plastic coated paper plate. You eat roadside and think, life is good! Of course, you can't come out here without a stop at Briermere Farms on the North Fork for their Peach Cream Pie- light and fluffy, creamy seduction for $15 - amazing. My older sister Terri's daughter Gigi (picture left), who's almost three, is ridiculously cute, smart and fun! We played "Bakery" using Alexandra's Cookie Dreams White Chocolate Cranberry Walnut Wish dough and Gigi's William Sonoma animal shaped cookie cutters; we went to "work". When I was a teacher, we always said it's "the process not the product", and I think this is a key example. It's probably better to use plain shortbread dough or sugar cookie dough, unless you want a giraffe with a cranberry for a head. Finally, there was Aaron's, "ACD White Chocolate Cranberry Walnut Wish Midnight Shake-Down", recipe below, to which I am partial.

When we go to Remsenburg we rarely like to leave our house unless it is for a trip to the beach or to go food shopping. However, there are some fabulous restaurants here and we ventured out to Bridgehampton to one of our favorites, Bobby Van's Steakhouse, with our favorite newlywed friends Brett and Jake Smith (aka Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and Alana and Aaron. The food, as predicted, was perfection. For appetizers, Alana and I shared the crab cake, and the smoked salmon and goat cheese tower (I'm not sure of the exact name of this dish but the title describes how it looks.) I was pleasantly surprised to discover that these two sensations can happily share a plate and their flavors were like an old couple, that quietly know how to make each other happy. For my second course I had the beef carpaccio, (also an appetizer.) I usually order two appetizers instead of one entree, then I use my "roving fork" to try everybody else's dish. We of course happily shared fries for the table. We were only disappointed by the Mac n' Cheese, which lacked flavor, seasoning, and any sort of fulfillment that frozen Stouffer's could have easily provided.

Recipe time...

ACD White Chocolate Cranberry Walnut Wish Midnight Shake-Down by, Aaron Feldman

2 Scoops Vanilla Ice Cream. We love Graeter's from Ohio and they will ship to you on ice and of course Haagen Dazs vanilla bean is always awesome too.)

1 Cup milk (add more milk to achieve a thicker milkshake)

2 ACD White Chocolate Cranberry Walnut Wish cookies

Blend all ingredients in a blender, pour into cups and drink (straw optional) makes approximately 16 ounces of frothy goodness.

And now to the shopping...

Everybody should check out my favorite jewelry line Rich Rocks by my friend, Robin Rothfeld. This weekend Robin brought her new collection to our house and all the ladies were ecstatic. Her costume jewelry line looks extremely similar to the styles of Van Cleef & Arpels, and Ippolita, and her pieces average around $85 each. You can't beat that, check out her new redesigned website at richrocksnyc.com , where you can shop online .You'll be so thrilled you did!

Well as the un-official end of summer is here, Labor Day Food Fest '08 is done , and Rich and I return to Austin, I wish you all a "sweet" start of unofficial Fall, football season, and back to school!

Sweetly,

Alexandra

Many of you fellow cookie lovers know Anna Ginsberg's blog, CookieMadness.com. Anna is a master of cookies and she updates her blog daily with awesome cookie recipes and delicious photos. Anna is also wonderful resource for bakers, since she has made pretty much every type of cookie out there. I have blogged about Anna before when she tried ACD cookies for the first time and wrote a "sweet" review on her blog (July 28th). However, this week I sent Anna a fresh batch of cookies packaged in our Warm Weather Shipping (a reusable ice pack and heat-protected bubble wrap) and Anna was thrilled with her cookie gift! On Wednesday, Aug 20th, titled, "Alexandra's Cookies - Free UPS 1 DAY SHIPPING FOR TEXANS!", Anna blogged about ACD cookies, saying, "These cookies are out of this world" and "Alexandra's cookies are the closest I've come to homemade in a mail order cookie. And I hate saying this, but I think her New York Cowgirl is better than my Tex Mex Chocolate Cookie." As I mentioned earlier, Anna also takes make-you-want-to-eat-through- your -computer-screen delicious cookie photos. So check out the yummy photos of ACD cookies on Anna's site, highlighting, as Anna says, the "super fudgy center" of our New York Cowgirl. Anna also graciously posted photos of Our Collection and our packaging on Flickr. We couldn't be happier! Thanks Anna!

PS. Anna is a huge fan of Houston's restaurant (like me) so check out her recipe for Houston's Copy Cat Veggie Burger- Delicious!

We are continuing to offer Free Texas Shipping to celebrate our launch. If you haven't already, please sign up for our Enewsletter, "The ACD Cookie Scoop" (on the right hand side of this entry) to receive specials, discounts, cookie news and tips that will only be available to our ENewsletter Subscribers.

Keep your comments and emails coming, we LOVE chatting with you!

Today, Alexandra's Cookie Dreams got a "sweet" write-up in Austin Tidbits (austin.gotidbits.com), titled "Cheaper By The Dozen." Tidbits is a cool online resource for everything new, hip and happening in Austin. (They also have a Houston edition.) We are delighted that "Tidbits" touted ACD cookies as "something simple that makes you feel good" and "an instant mood-lift". Please check out the full article at Austin Tidbits.

Incidentally, one of my favorite jewelry designers, Anthony Nak, is also listed on Austin Tidbits today and he is debuting his 0108 Collection this Thursday at Eliza Page. Now that 's a coincidence I like!

We are continuing to offer Free Texas Shipping in celebration of our launch, so check out Our Shop.

Alexandra's Sweet Tip 2:

How To Clean Your Diamonds

This tip comes from my mom. I have passed it along to many lady friends of mine and it always gets a "glowing" response. When I got engaged, everyone had advice for me about how to "care for my ring", and as a newly diamond adorned girl, I was eager to try their suggestions. After trying many methods including some electronic cleaners and special motorized devices, I discovered this technique is the cheapest and the best!

MAKE SURE YOUR SINK DRAIN IS COVERED BEFORE YOU START!

1. I use a shot glass (actually a relic from my college sorority days), which is the perfect depth and width for this task. But a small bowl will work perfectly well too.

2. Fill the shot glass or bowl 3/4 of the way with water (purified if your obsessed) and 1/4 with Ammonia (I use White Rose Lemon Ammonia from the supermarket). Swirl the mixture, and place your ring inside for at least 10 minutes. ( I have kept my ring in the solution for an hour and it has been fine, but I have never left it in longer than so I can't say what would happen).

3. Using a toothbrush, specified for this purpose, gently push the bristles into the ring setting, all around the stone(s) and on the band. You can reuse this toothbrush until the bristles are too bent to actually fit into the small spaces of your ring setting.

5. Give your ring a good rinse with cold water and gently dry it with a cloth designed to remove sunglass smudges.

This technique is great when your traveling and you need a last minute shine, you can substitute the ammonia for hand soap and follow the rest of the directions above. You can also drop your wedding band and other metal rings into the cleaning mixture to remove surface dirt and shine them up.

Hope this "Sweet Tip" helps. Please email me with any suggestions you have for cleaning for jewels...

Sweetly,

Alexandra

Last week we put the finishing touches on our E-Store and it's now attached to the website, under the heading, "Our Shop". Check it out, shop, and enjoy! We are thrilled to be fully operational!

I thought it would be fun to add an occasional section to my blog titled, "Alexandra's Sweet Tips" - in this section I will share suggestions, ideas, and answer your questions about baking, the cookie business and my other passion, entertaining. I truly look forward to hearing from you and exchanging creative ideas and solutions. So please send me your thoughts!

Here's my first tip:

When entertaining at home, whether it is hosting guests overnight or having friends or colleagues over for drinks or dinner, it is ideal to think through the eyes of your guests and try to create the most luxurious experience, which I call, "Living in the Hotel Dream". It takes a little forethought, but it is a simple way to relax and indulge your guests while marking you as the ultimate host.

So here's Alexandra's Sweet Tip 1 (with more to follow on this topic in later blogs)

The Guest Bathroom - Having lived in NYC most of my life, where space is limited, I'm personally aware that the title "Guest Bathroom" often really means "Your Bathroom," but regardless the same techniques apply. Before your day guests arrive (I'll write about over night guests in a later blog) put away anything personal, (toothbrush, toothbrush holder, bar of soap and soap dish, robe, towels, blow-dryer, etc.) so that you are left with an empty counter space and blank canvas to decorate. Next, thoroughly clean all surfaces and mirrors and make sure the shower door or curtain is clean and closed. Place a new roll of toilet paper in the holder and put extra wrapped rolls in a nearby-unexposed place, like under the sink cabinet. Near the sink, place a hand-pump soap and lotion (I love Voluspa in Burmese Rosewood because the scent is gender neutral). Add a neat stack of paper hand napkins on a tray (I use monogrammed paper napkins on a faux-snakeskin tray), or individual cloth napkins with a bin for disposing after use (separate from your garbage bin - perhaps lined in cloth to denote its' purpose). Light a scented candle and add a simple arrangement of flowers or one individual flower in a bud vase. Finally, turn the lights off or to dim (most traditional On/Off light switches can easily be replaced with a dimmer- check with your local hardware store) in the bathroom and let the candle set the mood.

Please email me and let me know how you make your bathroom guest ready.

Sweetly,

Alexandra

Last fall, after living in Austin for a couple of months, I decided that I was ready to start my dream business and create Alexandra's Cookie Dreams. I started by researching everything cookie and business related, websites, books, community events, baking classes, trade magazines, and of course blogs. I was captivated by Anna Ginsberg's blog, cookiemadness.net. I started reading her delicious recipes, viewing her mouth-watering photos and learning about Anna and her family through her writing. After several visits to her site, I checked out her "About" page and learned Anna actually lives in Austin too! I couldn't believe Anna and Cookie Madness were in my new home town. I immediately emailed Anna to see if she knew about commercial kitchen spaces for rent and I offered to send her a sampling of my cookies when ACD opened.

Not only did Anna recently taste my cookies, but on July 28th she generously wrote about ACD on her blog...you can check it out at www.cookiemadness.net.

Sweetly,

Alexandra
