The Story of Stuff is an eye opening video explaining the true cost of our stuff.
Many of us have already noticed how quickly thing break compared to when we were kids, it's almost as though things are made to break so we'll have to buy new ones.  Turns out they are not only made to break, but companies actually discuss how quickly they can get things to break while still leaving enough faith in the company to go out & buy a new one.
The sad part is, the deception doesn't stop there.
The system of supply & demand that was created by humans at the end of WWII to stimulate our economy is now actually hurting our economy, injuring our planet & making us all sick.
I highly recommend this video:

You're making a copy of your favorite tv show or music, then something goes terribly awry…do you throw it away?  NO!  Throwing away any electronic item away will contaminate our soils & water.  Now I don't know every dangerous element contained within our electronics, but I do know of one from some recent research I did for personal reasons.  Arsenic is one of several hazardous elements contained in electronic products and there is a lot of areas (if not all-since the water cycle is a continuous cycle throughout the planet) who's water contains arsenic.  Using water filters, R/O systems or bottled water will not protect you from arsenic.  Some R/O systems can, but only if you buy a special filter made for filtering out arsenic.  We've lived in 2 areas of the country in the 7 years my daughter has been alive, always had city water & either a good water filter or R/O system & used bottle water when out.  She has recently had blood & hair analysis done for a variety of things & much to my surprise, her tests showed high levels of arsenic in both her blood & hair!  What that meant was not only has she had long term exposure to arsenic, but also recent exposure.  The doctor stated that the most common cause was the drinking water, but that pesticides in/on our foods can also expose us to arsenic.  Since we eat an organic diet, that only left the water.  Both states we have/had lived in had arsenic in the drinking water!  Ugh!

So what do we do with our damaged or unwanted CD's & DVD's (like all of those that come in the mail)…mail them to Back Thru the Future, a woman-owned electronics recycling and data destruction company.  They also will take your old hard drives!  While you do have to pay for shipping, the recycling service is free and the benefits to the environment numerous.  Besides protecting our planet from soil & ground water contamination here are some other reasons to recycle:

CD/DVD Recycling Facts:

  • A cd/dvd is considered a class 7 recyclable plastic
  • To manufacture a pound of plastic (30 CDs per pound), it requires 300 cubic feet of natural gas, 2 cups of crude oil and 24 gallons of water
  • It is estimated that AOL alone has distributed more than 2 billion CDs. That is the natural gas equivalent of heating 200,000 homes for 1 year
  • It is estimated that it will take over 1 million years for a CD to completely decompose in a landfill

Hard Drive Recycling Facts:

  • Each hard drive contains over one pound of recyclable aluminum
  • Recycling one hard drive saves enough energy to:
    • light a 100 watt bulb for 134 hours, or
    • run your television for 102 hours or
    • the energy equivalent of 1.5 gallons of gasoline
  • Recycling aluminum is 95% more energy efficient than producing aluminum from ore
  • Recycling aluminum results in 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution than producing aluminum from ore

Vegans Jodi and Dan make eclectic, handmade gifts, including photo albums, journals, greeting cards, and jewelry. Their products are designed to help you reflect, appreciate each moment, and remember what's important in life: peace, love, beauty, and fun! While all of the paper they use is not made in US, their studio is located in Northern California, USA.

Their motto, "freedom from the ordinary ~ freedom for the animals," applies to their creations and their lives. To make a difference while doing something they love, they currently donate 5% of profits to animal welfare groups.

Because it's important to protect our planet, their paper comes from environmentally friendly, sustainable sources. Each of their paper products includes a card explaining the origins of the paper, and what makes it eco friendly. Their greeting card paper is also 100% recycled from post consumer sources!

They use handmade environmentally friendly paper from all over the world.

~Lokta Paper

~Banana Paper

~Mulberry Paper

~Mango Paper

Why do they use handmade paper? Besides the fact that it beautiful…

On average, a person uses more than 750 pounds of paper each year, which is the equivalent of nine big trees. More than half of the wood used by humans goes into various paper products, including boxes, napkins, disposable dishes, gift wrap, etc. These products rarely contain recycled fiber, and most of them are made of freshly cut trees. Each year many of the world's biologically rich forests are disappearing at an alarming rate and the cause is the expansion of industrial tree plantations, which supply pulp to meet worldwide demands for paper products.

With demand for paper expected to double in the coming years and the impact this will have on the world's forests, the search for alternative sources of paper pulp has become very important. It takes 60% less energy to manufacture paper from recycled stock than from virgin materials. Production of a ton of normal paper needs 20 trees and 7,000 more gallons of water than a ton of 100% recycled paper. Moreover, chemicals like chlorine are used in the bleaching process of these papers that releases chemical dioxin and other toxins, which pollutes our air, soil and water. Sometimes 1000-year old trees are sliced up and shredded into chips, shipped across the entire world, only to be chemically pulverized, bleached, and flattened to satiate the world's ever-increasing appetite for paper products.

Their cards, journals and photo albums have to be touched to be fully appreciated.  The beauty of how the textures come together is amazing!  They are so beautiful, they can be framed and hung on the wall to be admired by all!

Buy one for yourself, a loved one or a client.  You'll make a statement with your discerned taste, care for the environment and consideration of the recipenient!

Their work available at  Sweet Organics and Naturals!

Tree Free Soft Cover Journals

It recently came to my attention that the discount for buying 3 soft cover journals wasn't working correctly.

My math for the large journals was waaaay off & I didn't have a note that in order to receive the discount you needed to select 3 from the options menu.

Hopefully everything is fixed so that now when you choose 3 large or 3 small from the options menu on the journal page, you will receive a $3 discount.

One problem with being a sole proprietor is you only have one set of eyes which sometimes get very tired, so I don't always see mistakes.  When you are making a purchase & something isn't working right, please send me an email so I can fix the issue.  Not only will I appreciate it, so will everyone who comes after you :)
