Born from a school days friendship, Hail to the Eskimo now comprises Hannah Wilson (Vocals, keyboard), Phil Johnson (Guitar), Matt Wilkinson (Guitar), Rob Bishop (Bass) and Dave Crozier (Drums). They are from Doncaster and formed in March 2008. The band's intention is to create music that appeals to a wide ranging audience, yet still has the edge, allowing it to be classed in the alternative genre. Their songs are catchy and upbeat and they reflect the stranger parts of life and love with a witty commentary on the mundane. The Eskimos have played venues up and down the UK including The Kasbah in Coventry, The Green Room in Welwyn Garden City, Vintage Rockbar in Doncaster and The Ringside in Hull. Recognition for the band has come in the form of their song, 'Queen of the Disco', being played on numerous local radio stations and have been asked to appear on a live session for BBC Raw Talent Introducing, on BBC Radio Sheffield. Hail to the Eskimo were also asked to record their song ‘How Lovely You Are’ for local label Circuit Records, as part of a compilation album showcasing the best local bands in South Yorkshire. They have received positive reviews in a variety of publications, the most recent being the September 2009 issue of Playmusic Pickup magazine featured them as ‘Kerchoonz Band of the Month’, where they were described as creating a liquid sound and readers told ‘they'll show you a good time’. The age range of the band 17 to 37 means that genre influences are varied, including New Wave, Indie, Alternative, Pop, Rock, Funk, Disco, Grunge and even Metal and Classical. Band influences range from Blondie through XTC and My Bloody Valentine to Airborne Toxic Event, Plup and Placebo. Phil has played in many bands including the Neon Plastix, where he was involved in two single releases, a song that was featured on the video game Need For Speed: Pro Street, and an album release. He has played at venues all over the country supporting bands such as The Kooks, Robots in Disguise and Klaxons. Matt and Dave are both classically trained musicians, undertaking and successfully completing exam grades. Both have plenty of gigging experience playing with bands in and around Doncaster. Dave also plays the trumpet and has played both drums and trumpet as a member of the Armthorpe Colliery Brass Band! Rob is an experienced bassist that has played in numerous bands based in Lincoln, Leeds and Barnsley and as the youngest member, Hannah completes the line-up with her exciting vocal talents.
These five individuals combine their varied talents and produce the sound that is… Hail to the Eskimo.

Category: Blogging
HELLO, HELLO!
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen...
I'll start off by saying! "What? Where the hell did all that writing go?!" This is the second attempt at getting this blog up and running!
Sometimes we rely on technology too much, and I often wonder what it would have been like to have lived in the stone age amongst dinosaurs and other wonderful creatures, you know just as life was starting out where all man/women had was a spear and a cave for shelter? Maybe I would have got to name a snake a zebra??
Anyway, i'll keep it to the point. Baically I've decided to "document" some of the escapades from the gigs and shinsingszzz that we do through photos, videos and other such digital formats for you to have a gander at and see what we get up to at a few! Hope it works :) I'll do some more in the new year too.
Short and sweet, here we go... Recording, January 2009:
I'll start off with some old footage of when we went to the studio a few months back, which seems like many a moon ago. We obviosuly went in and recorded three songs at Axis studios in DoncasterDoomcaster, well three songs out of the many that we have, and continue to churn out like Mcdonalds do with Cheeseburgers and new flavours of Mcflurrys... anyway. Go have a watch of them, it's mostly us larking about rather than us playing our instruments. PLEASE NOTE; these videos conatin some rather poor quality interview techniques, viwers discretion... advised.

Waving goodbye to the floor as he knows it
Day 1:
Day 2:
Day 3: And that's a wrap for now, a not too spicy one though...
I'll leave you with a picture of this man. Phil used to have his hair like this

In a bit Matt x
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok now for something completely random. I know I said this blog was going to be about our gigs and what not, but i found this 22 seconds quite funny... We know who you are, insinity wood smacker!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doncaster Leopard June 8th, 2009. So, this is the first gig since I started doing this blog about gigs and what not. What a nice way to start it by doing a Donnie gig. Quite a bit to get through. From, Yorkshire nannies to, technical difficulties, and unplugged guitar leads to farts in faces...
The night begins with all the usual routine checks of going to the practice room and getting the gear loaded into the car, making sure we have everything we need yada yada yada. But to get all the gear into the car... with so much of it, how on earth does it fit into two cars? With Dave's mamouth drum kit to! Well, that is where 'The System' comes into play, as kindly shown by Phil. What would we ever do without the system. It's nothing fancy or anything, it's just Phil has a brillaint order of fitting it into the back of his car. He's really proud of it, and it's a secret. Nobody knows exactly how the system works, not even the others in the band!

This is Rob's system, not quite as impressive as 'The System', but still none the less a valiant effort... Not too sure why this is underlined, but Myspace wanted to do it.

Oh, Dave gets a new kit today to! Whoo. It's a very nice, shiney, sparkly white one. He absoloutely, superdupely cannot waitly till he plays it! I hope it beats his old kit! How he managed to play it at gigs was beyond me?!

Hannah looking very pretty... mischevious perhaps?

It's off to the Leo-pard next! Grrrr. There is no need for dogs to bark at every dog they pass by, humans don't do it so why do dogs? Imagine if humans did that? And dogs were humans... erm, not really.

Nice couple of posers there...

Nice lovely arty photo of phils guitar... at a slant!

Erm... Now it's the setting up part of the gig. Mainly setting up the uber kit that belongs to Dave and the many pedals and what not that we have to. Plus the other bleepy things that need to be addressed! Rob and Dave wear ear plugs to... it gets 'loud' up there! Ringside, Hull, 2nd July, 2009
What a pleasent suprise this was, it felt like we were abroad in some wondeful Spanish cocktail bar. We were on downstairs while some parrots were dieing upstairs, you know what I mean, some screamo bands were upstairs doing their thing... anyway alot of people were in shorts, which added to the tropical vibe of the place! No photos though beacuse at this point I lost the bloody camera.
So this is to make up for it.

"Rufus"

Brinsworth Gala, Brinsworth, 5th July, 2009
What a pleasent suprise this gig was. We loved it! It was the first time we had played a gig outdoors, and despite aprehensive feelings, this turned out top trumps! We went on some fun fair rides to and won some nice cuddley toys to!

Phil and Russ couldn't quite figure it out ... but what is to figure? Who knows... I know I wont

John!...

Old Nicks Tavern, July 8th, 2009
What a pleasent little hideaway this was! We weren't really sure what to expect at first, but when we turned up, such a clean and tidy pub, with Old Nicks probably one of the cleanest places we have ever had the prvlidge of playing!
We had a right good mix of people in, young and old and to the four gents at the front... was great to see your support for us!
Amongst other things, Phil got called gay, by a lady that looked remarkably like Kathy Burke... who was gay herself. It was The Right Said Fred look apparantley...

"You cheecky cow!"
Hannah got a bit drunk... erm... no surpises there then
A crazy little old lady who was at first kniting, got up, stopped kniting, and started to dance! Bless her, she then carried on kniting. It's great to have the old folks enjoying our stuff to.
We never actualy got to meet Old Nick... I think he must have been away taming demons, or perhaps he might have trasnformed into a jolly green devil that is partial to a pint of John Smiths?

We managed to find someone yet again, that is infactuated by our guitar pedals. Usualy there is at least one person that talks to us for what seems like hours on end about our pedals... we love the attention!
On the way home Hannah nearly wee'd herself...

Playmusic Pickup Demo Review
"...the playing is competent, the vocals are appealing and the songs are generally memorable. These are all good things incase you were wondering. I'm not going to launch into a sarcastic missive though, you'd be right to expect one. It's a well produced demo and frankly I love their self titled track - it reminds me of The Long Blondes, and anything that does that is much needed. If I were to criticise, I'd say... well, nothing actually."
Kerchoonz Garage Land section in Playmusic Pickup Magazine. September 2009 issue
"Steeped in echo, delay and atomosphere, Hail to the Eskimo seem quite happy to soak their immense pop tunes in liquid sound. Rather than let melodies speak for themselves, they give them a saline boost. Guitars sound translusant, beats sound punchy and vocals slinky, sexy, and obvious - meaning, you can sing along IMMEDIATELY. It's more fun! Yes that thing you forgot about while worrying about swine flu and the economic crisis. Forget about the onset of plague in China and dance to HTTE instead - they'll show you a good time. Awsome!"
Sheffield Music Magaizne: Live Review
"As soon as they started playing I could hear some very upbeat melodies played by a very tight band. They proved they know how to write a good song and are very appealing to a wide audience. 'Queen Of The Disco' shows off all their skills as very talented musicians. A round of applause is deserved all round I'd say!"
Full On Magazine: CD Review
"Hail to the Eskimo are a band playing upbeat pop. The female fronted group have a good demo behind them. Their self titled track shows off the best of this band! I'd suggest seeing them live! The band are full of confidence and know where they are going! They are constantly gigging and if anything like their CD, they would be well worth going to see live!"
Old Nicks Taven. Horncastle Newsletter: Live Review
"A five piece outfit hailing from Doncaster came to play their own brand of electro pop with slight tendencies towards new wave. With Matt and Phil on guitar, Rob on bass, Dave on drums and Hannah on lead vocals and synthesizer, they created a massive sound that got the whole room tapping their feet. Hannah's melodic vocals sat nicely over the beat driven music demonstrated exceptionally in the stand out original 'Queen of the Disco.' This band is relaxed and great fun, a perfect way to enjoy an evening of entertainment."
Old Nicks Tavern. Horncastle Newsletter: Live Review 05/11/09
On a rather wet and miserable bonfire night, Hail to the Eskimo made their second trip to Old Nicks from Yorkshire. Five easy to work band members made the set up painless and a good sound did the band the justice they deserve. A comprehensive set up saw twin lead by Phill and Matt, bass by Rob, drums and samples from Dave and synthesizer and lead vocals by Hannah. A pop band through and through, they take the experience to the max, covering Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi with pin point precision and their own chart worthy song ‘Queen of the Disco’. This band is bags of fun which just oozes from their stage performance, Hannah, queen of quips, keeps the audiences attention and puts hecklers in their place...girl power!!!!
Slicethepie.com: Track Reviews
"A nice return to the days of The Dandy Warhols. Long awaited and greatfully recieved..."
"Fabulous energy in music and singer. I like the music, that was really catchy...the drummer, he oozes class."
"Funky upbeat tune. The rythym is catchy and made me tap my feet along with it, the vocals were a bit of a surprise but she definitely carried the tune off and reminded me a bit of Belinda Carlisle. Certainly had enough to keep me interested."
"Funky guitar riffs in this track right from the get go. The drum work was tight and well maintained, as was the focused sounds of the guitars. Exceptionally done."
"Great beat, awesome drum beats. The voicalist has a very kind and pleasant voice. A great song to listen to when u need to get your mind off things... The sound is great."
