Well, every so often, one gets invited to be a part of something special. This past weekend was one of those times for me. And I will be forever grateful and honored. Started out the weekend tired and agitated. After being strung out at work all week, I had to call my good buddy josh Mac to help cover me at a show at Benny's in Longview. Gotta love Josh. He came and played from 9 til 11 when I got there. He is always there to bail me out when I call. Played for a couple hours myself. Small crowd, but a good one. They danced and enjoyed the songs. After loading my stuff out, I was too tired to even stop for the ritual taquito at Whataburger. Just ready to get home and get some sleep. Gina just reminded me why I love her again when we got home. She fixed eggs, bacon and toast for me at 2:30 in the morning, because she knew I had to be hungry. God I love that woman!
Saturday, I had to make a trip to town and hustle up some cash for the Sunday trip. With that done, we headed home and I hit the "magic room", aka my humble lil home studio. I had decided it was time to record some of the new songs I had been working on. After staying up til 3am recording, I fell asleep in my recliner while taking a break. guess that was a sign to shut it down for the night.
Sunday morning, I wake to the sound of Gina telling me "Get your ass outta bed or we ain't gonna make it!" LOL She makes a very convincing alarm clock. Load the needed stuff, and head out to College Station.
This is where the "something special" comes in. My good friends Ben Morris and the Great American Boxcar Chorus have put on an event called Harestock(which I still chuckle at the sound of since Ben is bald!) that helps fund Ready for Texas. I was extremely surprised and honored to have Ben ask me if I wanted to come play this year. Of course, I said YES!
Just walking around Harestock is like being at a Hall of Fame gathering of Texas Music. Just to name a few of those playing Harestock '09 to give you an idea: Mike Ethan Messick, Luke Adair, Michael Wren, Andrea Marie, Britt Lloyd, Tres Womack and many other GREAT artists. You get the idea. I was truly in the presense of greatness.
It was an amazing event. Except for the "flying canopy" and the now paraplegic gnome(victim of said canopy), everything ran pretty smooth and I applaud the Boxcars for such a fine event. I promise you, if I am ever asked to play it again, I will be there. Wouldn't miss it for the world.
After the long ride home, and then getting up to drive another 2 hrs to work, I still haven't caught up on my rest. One of these days, I'll break out and go fulltime with the tunage. Maybe then I can do the whole rockstar thing and sleep all day, rock out all night. but til then, I guess I'll just have to keep drinking green Monsters. Until next time, remember, don't take no wooden nickels, drink upstream from the herd, and pictures will be used against you. LOL
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

It's a long road to the top. And I covered about 1000 miles of it this week! Took vacation from work and spent more time on the road and work harder than I do at work.
Started the "Roger Cowan 'Beer and Bruises' Tour 2009" on Saturday, Aug 1 at Benny's in Longview. Great crowd, loads of fun, like always. Benny's has got to be one of the friendliest bars in the whole state. My good buddy Josh Mac was there, along with the Lonestar Republic Band and the East Texas Bombers Roller Derby team. One helluva fun night, and for those who were there, they will never forget it. For those who weren't there, you should have been. You missed things the world will never see again. Spent Monday practicing and doing some recording with Caleb. We jammed from 11am til almost midnight. What a day. Took Tuesday off to just chill and get some mowing done. Had to rest up for the week to come.
Wednesday rolls around, and we head over to the Rustic Cowboy in Stonewall, La. Nice place with some damn good food. Love playing acoustic. Easy setup, quick teardown, and very few sound problems. Played a good set, then spent an hour of so hanging around the bar meeting some of the locals. Nice folks. Time to roll home and get some sleep.
Loaded up and ready to roll Thursday, we start off towards Yantis to hit East Fork. East Fork is one of the best places I play. Always a super friendly crowd, great owners, and just fun all around. Long drive home afterwards, and we try and get some rest before a long drive Friday.
Friday takes us to a new venue. The Xcaliber Club in Corsicana. Interesting place. owner was pretty friendly and the crowd was fun to jack with. Especially the girl who asked "what was your name again?" My quick-witted response? "My name is Stoney. Stoney Larue. I'm just kidding. My real name is Cody Canada." Not sure but I think she might have believed me for a while. After loading out, we decide to go ahead and make the drive to College Station and just sleep when we get there. Damn, what a long ride. There was a DPS escort as some company moved a big ass piece of equipment down 45. Never thought I would be so happy to see Buffalo, Tx and highway 79.
Finally pull into College Station around 4am and figured what the hell? Let's go find the Beer Joint so we don't have to hunt for it that night. After locating it, we hit up Denny's for some real food, then begin the quest for a hotel. Super 8 is close and has a room, so we crash there. Gotta love a good comfortable bed and some cold a/c.
Get up about noon and head over to the Beer Joint to go ahead and load-in. Thought I would go ahead and get that outta the way so I could sleep more that afternoon. Nice place, cool people hanging out there when we load in. Later that evening, we head back up there to play the show. Not a big crowd, but they are a good crowd. We hang around and pick and grin from around 8 til 11, then load up and head on back into College Station to catch our buddy Jon Dittfurth over at La Bodega. Jon, bass player for Ben Morris and the Great American Boxcar Chorus, doesn't play much solo acoustic, so I thought that I HAD to see this show since we were in town. Little did I know he would ask me to play it with him! After banging out 3 good hours of acoustic asskicking, we loadout and head over to the Dixie Chicken for a nightcap brew and to shoot the shit. Man, gotta love my friends. I've only met Jon once before in person, but it was just like hanging out with an old friend.
As you can see, it was one busy ass week, and I tell you that I am ready to do it all again ASAP! Maybe it's cause my dad was a truck driver, but I love being on the road and the feel of putting miles behind me. I look forward to the day when we'll be able to this full-time. Hope to see you all down the road soon. I'll be looking for you! Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

i usually don't get real deep. I keep my true feelings to myself and try to go with the flow. Some friends have gotten me thinking about things though. So I felt the need to express some feelings today.
So many people today worry about what the world will think of them. They worry about offending someone so much, they fail to speak their mind. To me, remaining silent when you know you shouldn't is a form of slavery and subserviance. This is not what America is about.
We came to this country many, many years ago because people thought that the views held by some people were wrong. Simply because they were against the grain or out of the norm.
yes, i do say things people don't like. oh well. they'll get over it. If not, they can go somewhere else. Perhaps they should take a class in "political correctness." Whatever happened to being yourself?
Anyway, I guess I'll go dream about a world where people actually have the cojones to stand up for what they believe in and not worry about pissing someone off. I can only hope that teh future generations learn from our mistakes and make a stand for everything that's honest and real. FTW If ya don't know what that means, look it up.
Peace, Love and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

Well, that time is finally here! Had my first practice tonight with the full band. I must say it sounded awesome. I was blown away by the guys. For a first practice, I thought it sounded pretty damned good.
We ran over some covers, and did a couple lil "breakdown" jams. We covered "Kyle Hope", "Barefeet On The Dash", "Barlight", "Wear My Ring", and "Carney Man"(gotta play Gina's song. I love her so much!). I can't wait til we get everything tightened up and start doing some shows together. Shouldn't be long with the guys I have around me. They are friggin awesome. No other way to put it!
On the drums: Bobby Martinez, or as I call him "Ticktock" since he keeps the time. This cat can flat get down on the skins. I was already a fan of his playing and talent, but tonight he blew me away even more. To hear him get it with a double bass pedal is amazing.
On bass: Joe Hedl, AKA "Uncle Joe". I've known Joe for a lil while, from his days with another local band. Hadn't got to hear Joe play as much before tonight, but I am totally secure with having him do the bass thumping. He was in the zone tonight, and seemed to be having a ball. And that feller can really walk a bass like walking a dog! Sounded great.
On lead: Caleb "The Kid" James. Now, I call him "The Kid" simply because he is younger than the rest of us(He turns 21 this Sunday, so ladies if ya see him out somewhere, be sure and treat him extra nice!). Caleb is no slouch on lead. He has alot of blues and heavy metal influence, which I think fits in perfect for what we do. And he's also one of the nicest guys you'll meet. Can't wait to see him tearing it up next to me on a stage.
Ladies and gentlemen, I kid you not. This is going to be the best band to ever take a stage around here, and possibly anywhere! I have never felt so confident in a group of players before. For the first band I ever tried to get together, I think it's turned out damn good. I hope you all come out to see and enjoy one badass show.
Til then, stay tuned and keep up to date on the life of your favorite band:The Roger Cowan Band, the biggest, baddest, most kickass show noone has seen yet! LOL We'll see ya down the road soon!
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

4am an here I sit on the computer. You may ask "what the hell are you doing up?" Well, the answer is just getting home from another show. I played tonight at East Fork in Yantis, Tx. Damn, I love that place.
Here's a recap of the road:
Left around 5pm. Made sure I had everything this time. Don't want a repeat of last time! HAHA Stopped for some sodas and smokes, and settled in for the ride. "Dirt Force 1", the old Ford, was gassed up and ready for one more ride. Can't complain. Damn truck has been places I'll never be again, and seen things some folks should never see! LOL We won't go there!
Rolled into Yantis(can ya really "roll into Yantis" or is it just a general area on the map? Just wondering) around 6:45. pretty nice crowd at East Fork already. hope they stick around for the show. Check on in at the bar, and find Danny enjoying a nice big chicken fried steak. Sure looks good. Momma Pearl is at her post at the bar, and promptly gives me a big ol' hug. Gotta love me some Momma Pearl!
After setting up and soundcheckin the setup, we sit and chill for a bit with the folks. Our friends from radiofreetexas.org, the Exit 110 band, are playing a couple miles down the road at The Reel, so we roll down there to jack with them for a bit. Nice guys all around. We talk gigs, gear, and road stories for a while. It's getting close to time for them to start, so we sit and watch them play a couple songs. Damn good band. You get the chance, you need to check 'em out. They are some Grade A badasses, for sure. Met Andy, the head cheese at The Reel, and talk to him abit bout "bidness", then head back to start the show at East Fork. Crowd is still holding strong. Awesome! Kick it off and let the party begin! WOOHOO!
Momma Pearl is dancing, as are alot of the people there. Everyone seems to be having the time of their life, the way I like it. cartman is at his post by the tip jar. Gina has the camera rollin, and the beer is cold. All is right with the world.
Later in the night, I get blessed by something I never thought I would see. Momma Pearl gives me the "full monty" and we got it on tape! HAHA Too bad youtube would block it! On another note, met a new friend/fan tonite named Trey. Let me tell ya, that boy deserves to have his ass up there and playing. He played us a couple covers and a couple originals. That boy is better than he knows.
Before ya know it, it's 12 and time to wrap it up. Another nite in the books and another awesome show. I love this job. other than Momma Pearl giving me the "grand tour" of her funbags, it's a pretty uneventful night. At least for me anyway, and that's saying something. Only one set of boobs aired out, and only two pitchers worth of beer and three shots drank, it stayed pretty tame tonight.Looking forward to the next show there on Aug 6th.
On another note, I got the bright idea to start a video blog of life on the road. Be looking for it soon on youtube. Soon as Gina gets over her broken ankle, we'll start it. Should be highly entertaining to say the least!
Til then, we'll see ya down the road! Keep it freaky and chained to the bed!
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

Damn what a weekend! Let me start by saying, the following story is completely true. There has been no "additives" included. The events are real, and the memories are forever! Ya should have been there, that's for sure.
We started the weekend off with a show at East Fork out in Yantis, Tx. First time to play East Fork, and what a time it was. Forest Wayne Allen and Big Tom came up from San Marcos to spend the weekend with us and play some shows with me. Trip started out slow due to the traffic in Austin. So we decided to just meet up at the bar. I, in my awesome wisdom, left my guitar at the house, and didnt realize it til 30 miles down the road! U-TURN! Guitar on board, we do another U-turn and continue on our journey. Arriving at the bar around 8, we meet Forest and Tom in the parking lot. FYI, before each show, Forest does pushups in the parking lot. Don't ask me why. I think he wants to look good for da ladies! Anyway, we grab the gear and head inside. After locating Danny, and finding out where to setup, we soundcheck and grab a couple beers and some food while we wait to jam. Crowd is slowly getting bigger, and it's looking like a damn good night.
I guess now would be a good time to introduce my new mascot. his name is Cartman, and he is a 1' tall plush doll from the Southpark show. His job is to be "keeper of the tipjar" and molester of the ladies from what I saw this weekend! 9:30 PM: SHOWTIME!!!
Hit the stage and crank it up. Crowd seems to really dig the tunes. I bust out with some Jackson Taylor and they are singing along like there's no tomorrow. Awesome! They sang along almost all night, and loved the original stuff as well. Met some great new friends/fans, and had one badass time. We will be going back soon, for sure! Rolling home was a long drive, especially since Forest was only doing about 50 mph and we had about 110 miles to get there. Finally get home about 5am, and decide we need some homemade taquitos. After cooking a dozen eggs and a half pound of sausage, we chow down while killing a couple more beers. Awesome night capped off with an awesome breakfast. Damn, I can really cook when I'm drunk!
Friday evening, we roll out towards Longview. Forest does a better job of keeping up this time! We stop off at Harley's, get a couple bottle of some damn good whiskey, and we're ready to roll. Head on over to Benny's and start loading in and setting up. Benny's is one of my favorite places to play, and the crowd is always awesome. We chill for a lil while, then take the stage. Crowd is on fire tonight! Singing along, dancing their asses off, and a few even danced right outta their clothes!(Thanks ladies) Tom seemed to be really enjoying the "show" from his front row seat, and a few times, I think he was "in the show"!
Sweet Pea informs me it's Steven J's birthday, and whats a birthday without boobs? So, in honor of Steven J, we have the ladies in the crowd show him all the tata's he can stand. Everyone is having a great time and we can't believe it's already 2am and time to head home. Damn!
But, ya can't play in Longview without stopping at the Waffle Shoppe. Lil did I know, Tom had consumed his entire bottle of tequila! While we sit inside and eat, several of us take turns sitting outside with Tom as he pukes and sleeps on the front steps of the Waffle Shoppe! What a time! Too bad we didn't have pics of him sleeping on the steps! Saturday afternoon, everyone is awake and slowly feeling better. The "night before" is still on our minds as we roll towards Kilgoreand the Fillin Station Saloon. "No Whiskey Tonight" is the theme, which promptly goes out the window when we get there. Forest still has a lil Evan Williams from the night before, so we decide not to waste it. Buster Ellisor joins the menagerie(did I spell that right?) tonight and we proceed to hit the crowd with a triple shot of Texas Kickass! And i use the term "crowd" loosely. Don't get me wrong, the folks that were there were great, but damn there weren't many of them! I'd say prolly 35 or 40. But we ain't there to play for the masses! 40 will do just fine! We kick it off and proceed to tear it up the best that three guitar pickers from Texas can. No body gets too wild tonight, much to our disappointment. But, we can make up for that. We pass the bottle around and fill in the dead time with stories from the past few days, some of which are too "randy" to display here! After the show, we stop off next door at Whataburger for a bite and some caffiene to help keep us awake on the way home. Forest has to be in La Grange at noon Sunday, so now afterparty tonight. Met some awesome people who will always be on our minds from here on. Folks such as Momma Pearl(we love ya, momma), Rattlin Rick(custom lure maker from Yantis), Hula girl(never got her name, but I know some of the boys wish they had her number), and many others who shall remain nameless for the sake of their reputations!(You know who you are!)
Tom and Regina recorded both audio and video of this weekends events, and you may soon be able to purchase and enjoy the "Boobs, Booze, and Bikers: A weekend on the road" DVD/CD combo! If you see it, grab it! You will enjoy the hell out of it, just don't let the kiddos watch it! HAHAHA
Till next time, keep the shiny side up, the rubber side down, grab a bottle of whiskey, and let's paint the town!
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

Yeah, I know it's been awhile since ya heard from me. Just been busy. Now, for the rest of the story.
Wrote a new song the other day with my good friend Kevin Woodall. "Starting With You" is a great song and will probably be the title track from the new cd. Give it a listen and lemme know whatcha think. I know you'll love it.
We now have an official tattoo shop for the RCB. 420 Ink from Ore City, Tx. If ya need new ink, check these guys out! Did a badass job on my new tat and I really look forward ot getting alot more from the crew over there.
New logo for the group as you may have noticed. Our new official merch designer, Jen, was kind enough to work with me on some ideas. Hope you like it. She's a great gal and has some awesome ideas. Should have us some merch for sale soon. Be on the lookout for some tshirts and stickers at a show in the near future.
The search still continues for our lead and bass player. Met with some people, awesome players, just not the "fit" we are looking for. While we wish them all the best, we hope to soon find the final ingredients to our "music soup" that will make it so sweet to taste.
Stay tuned for more updates and pics from the road! hope you all hang in there for what is sure to be one helluva ride!
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

Another week gone, another weekend comes, and here I sit all bored and thoughtful. Life is looking up on the music end, though.
A couple weeks ago i was browsing around the Internet(Thanks Al Gore) and found a guy who was looking for a band. Emailed back and forth, and was liking what I was hearing. So, this past Monday we met for the first time. I had a friend who came up from Houston for work, so all the NE Texas Rowdies came out and we met up for dinner and a lil picking at Leon's in Longview. I invited the new guy out to meet us and hang out so we could get to know each other.
So let's see, he actually showed up like he said. Plus! He was cool as hell, grewat attitude. Plus! And he wasn't scred off by all the crazy ass RFT Rowdies! Double plus! But now, can he drum?
So, Thursday night gina and I head over to the Fillin Station Saloon to jam a lil and check out my man's skills on the skins. I gotta say, I was totally and completely impressed! not only did he rock out, but he did a solo to make Tommy Lee proud! I got up and threw a few Texas songs in the mix, and he was right there.
Passed along a handfull of Texas Music cd's to help whet his appetite for the scene, and am hoping to get together tonight or tomorrow and maybe practice a handful of songs. I am proud to make the official announcement that keeping the time, at the back of stage, the hick with the sticks, the man with plan, the Eyecandy dandy(as the ladies call em), Mr Bobby "Ticktock" Martinez!
Be sure to come out and see Bobby thumping away at the shows real soon. I know'll you'll enjoy it! Til next time, this is the Chickengreaseman signing off!
Peace, Love, and Chicken Grease! I'm Out!

Another weekend has come and gone and the wheels just keep a-rollin on. God, I love this shit!!! I am so glad I grew up around music and finally decided to get off my ass and start playing.
Didn't have a gig Friday night for a change, so I figured we would run over to the Electric Cowboy for Kung Fu Panda's b-day. Charlie Shafter and the Gnomes opeened up for Whiskey Myers. How can ya miss that show!
Charlie and the Gnomes went on and tore that place! First time I've had the chance to catch them live, and I was totally and completely impressed. They put on one helluva show and played likes hell!!! Can't wait for the day i get to open for them and enjoy the show once more. I love Charlie's hat. Man, I gotta get me one of those. That dude is pimpin, pimpin! And is it just me or does he remind ya of Will Turner from "Pirates of the Caribbean"? HAHA
Whiskey Myers came on after that and gawddamn them boys kick ass. I have never seen them get so into it. I thought Cody C was gonna kick a hole in the stage. John had some "technical difficulties", but he got it all sorted out. Cody T was in the friggin zone all nite. damn that dude can pick. A blazing set, as usual, just ripped the crowd apart and set in my mind that these guys are gonna be one of the hottest bands ever to come outta Texas.
Saw Momma Tate again. It's been too long. She has been one of the best inspirations and supporters of mine. She always asks how things are going and emails me all the time checking on us. She truly has a heart as big as Texas and we love her for that! She will always be an honorary member of the band!
Hung out after the show and did a lil picking on the tailgate. Was surprised to have a woman walk up and start singing along with one of my originals. That was awesome. Spent some time trying to hook the Kung Fu Panda up with some girls in the parking lot. What can I say, I try to take care of my boy! It was his borthday afterall! Had to call it a night tho and head to the house, seeing as I had to be up early to drive to Sulphur Springs to open up for Zach Walther and the Cronkites at the Texas Lounge. Got up early Saturday and loaded the truck for the road. Luckily, since I'm still giggin solo, it ain't much to load. Rolled out at 10:00am and headed north. Nice drive through the East Texas pines. Got to town about noon. Been a long time since I was back there. Rode around a lil and checked out the old places. Got a call that the room was ready, so we headed that way to get some rest.
Around 4pm, headed down to load-in and soundcheck. Soundcheck went pretty damn good. No majors problems and everything was sounding good. Time to go eat!!! Joel of Texas Riot Productions is an awesome dude! He took us and Zach and the guys to dinner at the China House buffet. Damn, I love chinese. I give all the respect in the world to Joel and Torren for what they are doing up there. Nice to be able to jsut sit around and chill over some good food with such cool ass people. Finished eating and it's time to go back and get ready!
After a quick shower and change into my "bidness suit," time to do it to it! Kicked it all off and got the crowd going. Did my best to kick ass to the fullest, and from the responses I got, I think it was mission accomplished! Zach and the guys came on and friggin tore it up!!! I am in awe of such a great performance. Can't wait to jam with em again. After party in Zach's room was jsut as badass as the show. Wish I coulda stayed longer, but duty calls and had to head home to get some bidness done.
Ya'll stay tuned for the next episode, and be sure to follow along as the I am sure the times will only get wilder and memories fuzzier. Gonna be a long and crazy road, hope you all can hang in there!

Well, folks, another night has come and gone, but the memories will forever remain. Damn, that sounds cheesy as hell, don't it? Oh well, who cares? Got to open for Ben Morris and the Great American Boxcar Chorus at the Fillin Station Saloon last night, and man, what a time! I had Josh Mac jamming with me again, just incase I got called into work. I didn't want to leave them with no opening act! And of course, Josh was great as usual. He's such an awesome performer. I can't wait to see how he does in about 5 years. I am sure he'll be awesome.
Josh and I went on about 8:30 and played our hearts out. We always aim to please, and love rocking out for a fun-loving crowd. The crowds around here are slowly getting more and more into the Texas music, and we are doing all we can to make it happen!
Ben and the guys got there about 9:30, due to the traffic in Tyler. They were in Palestine this weekend for the Texas Music Awards. They are nominated for Live Band of the Year and I'm sure they will win it. If they don't, something is wrong in this world! Last night was one of the best damn performances I have ever seen. From the first note to the last, Ben and the Boxcars kick the ever loving shit outta that place! And that's what I love about them. Whether it's ten people, or ten thousand, they play their hearts out everytime.
Other than one helluva show, it was a pretty uneventful night. No one got arrested(this time), no one got nekkid(this time), and no one got piss drunk. Ok, that's a lie. Tony the Kung Fu Panda was FUBAR!!! Gotta love my drunken security. He's a badass by day, and shitfaced by night. It's amazing how a fourth degree blackbelt can be so uncoordinated! No Waffle Shoppe close by, but there is Whataburger next door, so it was just walking distance to get the nightly after-show gig. Taquito and DP at 3 in the morning is awesome. A handful of rowdies made it out and enjoyed the show.
Stay tuned for another great show next week as we travel to Sulphur Springs to open for Zach Walther and the Cronkites at the Texas Lounge. Sure to be another awesome show with good friends. Hope to see you there!
