Yess! I'm adopting a pokémon from pokeballs.dollclique.com. Why?
Let me make one thing clear: I'm not a pokémon fanboy. But my connection to pokémon is that I used to be a big fan of the old pokémon games. (Red, blue, gold, silver) Back then, pokémon was just another game for gameboy. Perhaps a bit hyped, but nothing like what it became a few years later. And it was a decent game. Not great, not sucky, but just a decent game, and I played it like nuts. I didn't buy the collector's cards, I didn't wear the t-shirts, I didn't watch the movies, you get the point. And it was because of that I later got into gameboy music. I read about the swedish band Puss, which where big then, in a newspaper, and it was close at hand. I was also playing the ROMs back then, which made me play around with no$gmb, an experience I've had a lot of use for later on.
So the reason I'm adopting a pokémon is because the page reminded me of the times when I was playing the old-style pokémon games, and because I still feel a connection. Pokémon is so associated with crap today, but still I have pokémon to thank for making me start doing gameboy music.
And also because I like pixel art. :D
Speaking of tht, I'd like to return to an old project I've got lying and make an old-school RPG for gameboy. If you're interested any little way, please give me a shout. (Music, story, graphics, coding, ideas)

Current mood:  tired
My hero of the day is Jeremy Kolosine. Not only does he have a name that sounds almost like consine, but he also sent me a package with a few goodies.

Originally he was supposed to send only a NES dance mat so I could do some musical fun with it. But instead I ended getting these things:

  • The above mentioned dance mat
  • Two greyboys
  • A CD with Shakespace, a band Jeremy was/is a member of
  • A 12" with Receptor's music
  • A dual-end link cable
  • A CGB wall-plug power adapter
  • Bubble wrap (Wtf, you think... But see below)
First off, the dance mat: My plan was, and is, to write some sort of music software for Gameboy to interact with the dance mat interfacing the dance mat should be easy, The original NES and SNES used a clocked serial line with a strobe pulse to read out controller status. I've been able to read out a SNES pad from the Gameboy's serial port, so it shouldn't be too much trouble. The only real problem I can see is that the mat must use some special kind of format for transfering 12 positions in only 8 bits.

I'll figure that out. Now what I need is creative ideas on how to use a dance mat to control music software. I'd love to hear ideas from you other peeps.

Unfortunately I don't have a vinyl player easily available, but I've heard an mp3 of one of the songs, and I liked it!

As for the GB's: One of them has a few dirt lines on one side of the screen, the other one has a sticker on it that says AC only, which means that it can't be battery powered. These things are probably relatively easy fixesm once I get inside the boys. But using a Gameboy which is not as fucked up as my own was a real pleasure. As some people might know I tried to add a backlight to my GB, and failed, leaving the screen with almost no contrast. Apart from that, my GB had a very low sound output level, and the battery lid got stolen, probably because it had an akayism sticker on it.

So using a Gameboy with a battery lid, actual screen contrast, and a sound level which is not retarded low, is a real pleasure.

I think I ought to make a soung to celebrate this. Thank you very, very much for the things you sent me!

But now: a bit of sleep! My eyes hurt because of fatigue!

Veqtor, one of the other members of the sound collective and record label OXO-Unlimited finally has a MySpace! Veqtor mostly does glitchy IDM but some of his older works are highly influenced by the rave scene. You can buy the CD "Prototyping 1995-2004", which contains some of hios older works, in the OXO-Unlimited shop.

What I'm doing when I'm making music? Well, I have a thing for javascript. It's pretty much my language of choice. I've tried to make demos in javascript, but not really gotten it right. (If you don't know what a demo is read at the bottom of this post) Until now. I was doubtful about it, but in the same I was satisfied with I had accomplished. If you want you could always have a look:

Best viewd with Opera, second best with Internet Explorer. (Sorry to say it) Preferably not viewed in Firefox. (Might be slow and eat memory)
It's got a good rating on pouët, to my surprise. The next wicked thing was that a scener, a_lee_n, tried it on Opera on his Nintendo DS, and it worked quite well! Opera rocks! Here's a video of it: http://nihon.se/tentacle.wmv
The next thing I gotta do is develop something serious, more specifically an AJAX framework. But that's for the future.

Wikipedia quote:
"The demoscene is a computer art subculture that specializes itself on producing demos, non-interactive audio-visual presentations, which are run real-time on a computer. The main aim of a demo is to show off better programming, artistic and musical skills over other demogroups."

Different demos have different styles, some aim for technical perfection, and uber-design. My demo that I linked above is a size demo. The objective was to get it under a certain file size, in this case 512 bytes. Yes, that's half a kilobyte.
But now I gotta go to bed!
