Below is a great article about the play and the production company.

Feminist Company Stages Docudrama
(http://www.pioneerlocal.com/newsstar/entertainment/245709,dy-twenty-020707-s1.article)
February 7, 2007
By CATEY SULLIVAN Contributor

Mention "Jane" to young women today and they're apt to associate the moniker with the airbrushed beauty-and-boys-centric magazine of the same name. Thirty years ago, the name had a vastly different resonance. From 1969-73, Jane was an illegal grassroots movement of housewives and students intent on providing reproductive rights, including safe, inexpensive abortions, to any woman who wanted them.

With "Jane: Abortion and the Underground," Chicago's 20 Percent Theatre Company stages Paula Kamen's documentary-style drama detailing the organization.

Don't mistake the name: 20 Percent isn't about creating less than complete productions.
"Only about 20 percent of the leaders in the theater industry -- designers, technicians, directors, playwrights -- are women," explained company founder Elizabeth Schwan-Rosenwald, citing a statistic from the New York Council on the Arts.

"We're dedicated to strengthening the presence and raising awareness of women in theater," she said.

Schwan, a 2002 graduate of Smith College, formed 20 Percent in 2003 with a group of like-minded Smith alums. In "Jane," the group found a drama that dovetailed with the company's mission.

Women's lib redux

"We are women whose ultimate goal is the liberation of women in society," reads a Jane pamphlet. "One important way we are working toward that is by helping any woman who wants an abortion to get one as safely and cheaply as possible."

"They were right here in Chicago and they were revolutionary," Schwan said.

In their mid-20s, Schwan and her colleagues were born before Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that paved the way for legal abortions.

They were taken aback at some of the things they found in researching the era that preceded the ground-breaking Supreme Court decision.

"I couldn't believe how hard it was just to get condoms," said Lauren Van Kurnan, who plays various roles in the ensemble drama. "Today, you can just walk into Planned Parenthood and take some. Then, they were practically impossible for a woman to get," she said.

But as different as things are today, women are hardly in a position to take reproductive rights for granted, Schwan added. Last year, 12 states introduced 19 bills seeking to ban abortion (make it a felony) in all stages of pregnancy, according to the National Center for Reproductive Rights.

Reproductive frights

"Abortion is not illegal at this point. But I do think we're on the edge of that changing. And that frightens me," Schwan said.

In the days of Jane, having or providing abortion meant risking prison time. And because of its very secrecy, Jane's history isn't well known, Schwan said.

"You don't keep written records of something you're trying to hide," she said.

Jane started in a Hyde Park women's center, the Chicago Women's Liberation Union. The women portrayed in the drama are based largely on oral histories.

"They came from all different walks of life, were all different colors and all different levels of education," actor Van Kurnan said. "What they all had in common was that they needed health care, reproductive rights."

'Certainly, there's an educational element to the production, but there's also incredible element of sharing and incredible drama," Schwan said. "The women who worked on this movement didn't realize it at the time, but they were making history."

March 10th, 2007 commemorates the 14th year anniversary of the death of Dr. David Gunn at the hands of an anti-choice, "pro-life" extremist. Since 1996, pro choice advocates have begun to claim this day National Day of Appreciation For Abortion Providers and have turned this day of mourning into a day of remembrance of our losses, mobilizations for activism and celebration for our gains.

This March 10th, join Chicago Abortion Fund and Pomegranate Health Collective for a celebratory, informative and yummy event at Acme Art Works, located at 1741 N. Western from 4-7pm.

Celebrate! will consist of:
A Bake Sale*
A Cake Walk with cakes donated from local bakeries and bakers.
A Raffle with donations from Women and Children First Bookstore, Early To Bed, Chicago Women's Liberation Union Herstory Project, local artists and more!
Speakers
Short Films relating to abortion rights and choice
lots of information to browse and cards to send to abortion clinics and doctors!

For more information, please contact Pomegranate Health Collective at info (at) pomegranatecollective.org.

*The bake sale and cake walk will be peanut-free, along with some accommodation for other allergies and ethical diets such as veganism (most of the goodies will be vegan).

For centuries our culture has been moving away from traditional, woman-centered birth, and toward medicated births in hospitals, with an ever increasing rate of Cesarian section. But a new movement is helping women find the options that allow them to truly connect with their infants and themselves, without the interruptions of a medical birth.
A natural childbirth can vary according to the desires of the parents, but in order to make the choice that's right for you, you must know your options. Organized by Pomegranate Radical Health Collective, this panel of speakers will explain the role of doula and midwives in childbirth, birthing options such as homebirth or waterbirth, and how to choose a practitioner that suits your needs.

Welcome to people of all genders, sexual
orientations, and birth histories.
Wheelchair Accessible

Featuring Speakers:
Kathy Puls: Independent and experienced Certified Nurse Midwife for over 34 years, speaking about the role of midwives.
Ami Burns: Doula & childbirth educator, creator of the documentary "Mothers and Babies: Lesbians Creating Families." Speaking about the role of doulas.
Gayle Riedmann: An Oak Park Certified Nurse Midwife attending waterbirths, with over twenty ears of experience. Speaking about waterbirth.
Jennifer Gagnon: A certified nurse midwife from A Woman's Place Birth and Health Resources, an independent nurse midwife practice experienced in home and hospital birth. Speaking about homebirth.
Karen Laing: Experienced childbirth educator and founder of Birthways, a labor support and postpartum doula group in Chicago. Speaking about how to find a practitioner that's right for you.

When: Saturday, November 18th at 2:30 pm
Where: Roosevelt University: 420 S. Michigan Ave | Room 306
Cost: Free (Donations Accepted)
Pomegranate zines and merch, and light refreshments will be for sale.

"Jane: An Abortion Service" Screening
Friday, October 6 at 7:00

Las Manos Gallery presents a screening of Nell Lundy and Kate Kirtz's film "Jane: An Abortion Service." Jane, a Chicago-based women's health group, performed nearly 12,000 SAFE, illegal abortions between 1969-1973. As Jane members describe finding feminism and clients describe finding Jane, archival footage and recreations mingle to depict how the repression of the early sixties and social movement of the late sixties influenced this unique program.

Judith Arcana will discuss her experience with Jane and read from her new book What if your mother, recently published with Chicory Blue Press. What if your mother is a collection of poems and monologues examining a constellation of motherhood themes rarely offered with such richness: abortion, adoption, miscarriage, and the biotechnology of childbirth. The book will be available for purchase.

A suggested donation of $5.00 will benefit the Illinois Reproductive Justice Fund. Help contribute to the solution!

Las Manos Gallery is located at 5220 N Clark Street, corner of Foster and Clark, 773.728.8910

A little tidbit thrown our way from Early To Bed (www.early2bed.com)

Recycle your vibrator batteries!

Hey folks in Chicago-- earlier this year the City of Chicago [finally] set up a battery-recycling program! While this doesn't make up for the fact that the blue bag program sucks dildos, it's nice to have a convenient option for keeping all those batteries-- which we know you're flying through-- from harming the environment.

You can drop off your used household batteries at any Chicago Public Library or Walgreens Drug Store! (http://www.chicagorecycling.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=57&Itemid=86)

We just dropped of at least 12lbs of 'em yesterday... the woman at Walgreens looked at us like we were crazy :)

Keep on buzzin' Chicago!

====================================

Finally, a request that we would really like to help out with (please tell them you heard about it through us if you do buy a book). Hurry, the program already started, and they do not have enough for all the girls!

Changing Bodies, Changing Lives

Chicago Womens Health Center is in need of 60 copies of this book for classes we will be teaching to girls in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center throughout the coming school year.

If you can help out by buying 1 or more copies, we (& the girls) would greatly appreciate it!

Please ask a Women and Children First (www.womenandchildrenfirst.com, 5233 N. Clark St.) staff person about this, so you can buy at a discount.

Educate to Liberate!!

Thanks so much in advance for your support.

For more information, please contact Laurie or Aisha at CWHC 773.935.6126 ext. 230
