Current mood:  breezy
Hello dear ones and myspace blog-readers,

Just a few bits of news and reflection (with upcoming tour dates at the bottom).

We (Sean. Micah and I) will be playing a very special show this Saturday night, November 7 at the brilliantly renovated Mississippi Studios.  This will be my only Portland show of the Fall, and will serve both as a homecoming, and as a tour send-off.   I just returned from a wholly inspiring and very fun tour in Japan (playing solo sets and collaborating with sound artist Ethan Rose), and will be heading back to Europe, with the full band next week (dates below).  I believe it will be a cozy, enchanting and stimulating evening.  Sean and Micah will also be performing their jawdroppingly beautiful songs as their band Musee Mecanique.  My dear friend, label-mate and favorite Spaniard, Rauelsson will open the show, sharing his songs in Spanish and perhaps revealing his secret Paella recipe.  I hope all you Portlanders can make it.

**Laura Gibson, Musee Mecanique, Rauelsson**
Saturday, November 7
Mississippi Studios - 3939 N. Mississippi Ave; Portland
9 pm (doors open at 8)

Tickets will be available at the door, but I encourage you to buy them in advance at:
http://mississippistudios.com (then click on tickets)

I also wanted to share a few highlights of my travels the past few months.  I spent the most of September on tour in Europe, then did a run of shows on the West Coast of the US, before heading to Japan in October.

Europe/UK Highlights:
-Riding on the back of a bike, through alleyways and over canals in Amsterdam (Thanks Eric!).
-Seeing Portland and Seattle friends at the End of the Road festival in Dorset County, UK.
-A day off in Paris, devoted entirely to eating and drinking (cheese, fruit, wine, pastries, chocolate - Thanks Bill!).
-Sunset over the Stockholm skyline
-Rest Stop soccer games with the Alela Diane crew.

West Coast Highlights
-Driving down Big Sur, learning about elephant seals.
-Getting free passes to Disneyland (Our instructions were to meet a man named Flint at the Disneyland entrance, under the last A in California.  Flint turned out to be the manager of Fantasyland), reliving childhood memories on Pirates of the Caribbean, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Old Thunder Mountain Railway (thanks Mr. Flint!).
-Good times backstage with the Great Lake Swimmers and Wooden Birds.
-Making cookies after our Stanford show (Thanks Angela!), and sharing them with the audience of our Santa Cruz show.

Japan Highlights
-Bullet trains through Rice Paddies.
-Being chased by deer in Nara.
-Riding bikes to a Hot Springs in Matsumoto, then bathing with all the old Japanese ladies.
-Photo shoot for a Japanese Fashion Magazine, trying to fit into designer shoes that were much too small, ending up holding shoes for the picture.
-Many laughs with Ethan and Norio.
-Late night Sushi dinner at the home/restaurant of Chifumi and family.

Last, but not least:

Hello friends near and far,

We (Laura, Micah and Sean) are on our way home from our first bit of Spring touring. We had such a wonderful time, made so many new friends, and fell in love with so many communities (Lubbock, Moscow, Bozeman, Santa Cruz...)

We will be celebrating our return, and the release of my new record, Thursday, April 2nd, at the Old Church in Portland (1422 SW 11th Ave).

I strongly strongly encourage you to buy tickets in advance here:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/56939

Members of the Portland Cello Project will be joining the set, as well as a choir of friends, and special guests. The supremely lovely band Ah Holly Fam'ly will be opening.

...and we're throwing a potluck! Feel free to bring a snack or dessert to share, but definitely don't feel obligated.

We will be leaving the next day to tour the country with Damien Jurado. Dates are posted.

Thanks for you support!
love, lg.

Hello dear folks,

I hope you are enjoying the Fall. I have been collecting leaves and canning things. I am looking forward to baking pies with my sister for Thanksgiving.

I have so much news that I will soon share, about my new record (to be unleashed in February). This is a busy time, and I am really excited.

I posted a bulletin yesterday, about setting up Holiday House shows, around my travels to California for Christmas. There was such an overwhelming and positive response that we decided to open it up to Oregon and Washington as well.

So...Sean and I will be playing a series of special Holiday House Concerts this year. If you are interested in hosting us or have us play as part of your Holiday party, please write via myspace or email lgsingalong@gmail.com , and I can give you more details.

The Concerts will take place between November 28 and January 3rd. We are open to to homes in Washington, Oregon and Idaho from November 28-December 16; and Southern Oregon and California between December 15th and January 3rd.

We hope this means we will be drinking a lot of mulled wine this year.

Thanks very much. Hope to hear from you soon.

much love and thanks,
laura g.

Hello hello,

We (myself and musical collaborator Sean Eagle Vision Ogilvie) will be heading out on a short summer tour beginning August 16th, heading out to the midwest, and back through the Rockies to the West Coast. We will be playing a few club shows, as well as some lakeside lodges and one wedding, and possibly a Penitentiary.

Some things you should know about this tour:

1. It is our goal to swim every single day of tour, PLEASE SEND US any swimming hole (river, lakes, waterfall) recommendations you have along our route. Hopefully by the end of tour we will have compiled a good list of North American swimming holes, and a stack of polaroids of our cannon-balling into these swimming holes.

2. I am excited to unveil a bunch of new songs, from my upcoming record (which I just finished recording a couple of weeks ago).

3. If you live in any of these cities, we would love your help in promoting these shows. Please spread the word (in the most polite, non-invasive way possible), and contact me if you are interested in doing some extra promotion (hanging posters, etc.). Your extra efforts will be rewarded by a Mix CD of our favorite bands.

Here are the dates.

8.16.08 Boise, Idaho - Neurolux
8.17.08 Stanley, Idaho - Redfish Lake Lodge
8.19.08 Minneapolis - 400 Bar
8.20.08 Milwaukee - Stonefly

Hey folks,

I will write a more extensive tour report soon...But for now I must say: What an amazing experience!..touring the country with Colin Meloy. I was overwhelmingly inspired by so many new people and places. Thank you so much to the Decemberists fans for being such sweet people to share my music with.

and...I am doing well...shifting gears and getting ready to record my new record.

I broke out my ice-cream maker promptly upon returning home and made ginger ice-cream...so good.

I've received a whole lot of messages about getting ahold of my Six White Horses tour EP. For those of you who missed the Colin Meloy shows, we just put the remaining copies of the tour ep for sale at the Hush Records website. They are limited, so if you are dying to have one, act soon.

http://hushrecords.com and click on the "shop" link. I'll try and get a picture link up on my myspace soon.

thanks so much! More stories soon.

Hello folks,

This update is actually a gluing together of several unfinished updates I have as sticky notes on my computer screen. Sorry for my lack of communication...lots of news. Thank you so much to everyone who has written in the past few months...

First off, if you are reading this, you might have spotted on my page that i will be embarking on a national tour with Mr. Decemberist, Colin Meloy. I am very excited to be tagging along with such a swell fellow, and also excited to have lent back-up vocals to his new tour-only ep "Colin Meloy sings Sam Cooke".

I will also be toting along a new EP of my own, of old blues and traditional songs (none of my own songs). This will be a limited run recording, so make sure you pick one up this spring.

As for my next record, I am a slow and steady worker. We'll be recording throughout the spring, and will hopefully have it wrapped up someday soon. I have been so excited about writing new songs...and can't wait to share them.

...and, in addition to the new record, and EP, I am working on another musical project with my wonderful genius experimental music friend, Ethan Rose...more info on that to come...

In the meantime, here are couple other records out this month that I was very honored to be a part of:

White Hinterland, Phylactory Factory (out March 4th on Dead Oceans)
The Dodos, Visitor (out March 18th on French Kiss Records)
Weinland, La Lamentor (out March 4 on Badman)
(already mentioned) Colin Meloy sings Sam Cooke

I will be heading back to Europe (mostly Spain and the UK) in June.

...and I have had the strangest dreams lately.

More soon (hopefully less news-y, more personal. I am learning so much right now).

much love,
lg.

hello folks,

i am enjoying my last couple of weeks of precious home time, before heading out to foreign states to play shows for a big chunk of the summer...i have been at home for two months, and a very life-changing two months they been. i have been learning, more than ever (but possibly as confused as ever), about life and love...and if i'm lucky, these learnings will trickle down into songs...either way, to be here, and to be present during this time in my life, is a gift.

i am spending my days in other peoples gardens, planting, pulling weeds, and raking leaves. i have also been running up to the top of mount tabor, most every day, and each of those days i stare out at the view over portland, and notice how even the slightest changes in light and weather can bring into view things i have never noticed.

---------------------
there are a few pictures from my May Doug Fir Show up in the pictures section.

the Portland Cello Project show was filmed, and will be up online real soon.

----------------------

Keep Checking for Summer Tour Dates...I will be playing shows with some very fine folks this summer, including my dear friend Casey Dienel (June/July East Coast), Portland heroes Richmond Fontaine (June West Coast) , and Brooklyn Songwriter Luke Temple (July West Coast)...I will be adding a slough of shows in the coming days (including Chicago area and California) so keep posted.

---------------------
Also, a few of my songs have made it into some fine compilations, that you can order or find at stores.

Here they are:

Loose Records (UK Label that has released records by M Ward, Neko Case and The Handsome Family) -
New Sounds of the Old West Volume 5
includes Hands in Pockets
buy it here

Fargo Records (French Label that releases the music of Andrew Bird Jesse Sykes and others)
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
Featuring all female songwriters and female fronted bands, including Jesse Sykes, Alela Diane, the Innocence Mission, Pink Nasty and others.
my song "Country, Country" is on there
buy it here

Pdx Pop Now 2007 Compilation:
featuring Menomena, Colin Meloy, Yacht, Mira, Ethan Rose and others:
will include Come By Storm (an unreleased track)
buy it at Portland based record stores (and I believe online somewhere)

well...thank you for reading this. sometimes i feel silly writing and posting my thoughts or news about what i am doing...but the fact that people care, and are interested is very encouraging.

love,
laura
