Local band, Yoyodyne, released their CD – Advice – this past spring. The band is self-described as "…a delectable snack full of succulent melodic pop harmonies, tasty beats–with a reverby flavor of surf and the earthy hint of Roots Rock." The Willamette Week wrote…."Yoyodyne’s smart rock and sweet, call-and-response lullabies offer a pretty uplifting soundtrack."

Friday August 28. Would have enjoyed seeing living legend Al Green but wasn't ready to shell out near $200 for 2 reserved seats and the Stevie Wonder show taught me to beware the territorial blanket wars. Rather I went the other direction to the fabulous Kenton Club to see a long time fave and oft-overlooked Portland gem: Richmond Fontaine. A great show including some fine new songs, although the Budweiser Battalion (I've never seen so much Bud consumed anywhere in PDX) interrupted as loudly and often as possible. RF are off to Europe for a month where their new album is already out and the crowds will sit or stand in rapt silence forl this Americana gem.

The only reason I didn't hit the Throwback Suburbia show at Mississippi Studios is a I just caught them at International Pop Overthrow last week. Power Pop Brilliance. We're talking Raspberries to ELO here people. Too slick for some, but lay it on me lads I'm singing the new disc all day!

Cheers,
Carl

PDX Pop NOW rolls on this Sunday down at Rotture. Again there is great music for all tastes: Catch the rustic Americana of Ah Holly Fam'ly or Old Believers. Groove to the funkalicious electro of Jeffrey Jerusalem or the gypsy stylings of Chervona, the positive hip-hoppers Lightheaded, or the drones of Thrones. And close out the evening with some big Portland faves such as Shaky Hands (hey maybe we can buy their new cassette there, yeah cassette) and Menomena. What a finish.  The tunes rolling right now are all from Sunday PDX Pop Now performers.

That most marvelous of PDX Musicfests is back this weekend. All Portland, all cool, and all FREE. Hit up the full lineup at pdxpopnow.com You're listening to some of Friday's Performers, from the serene calm of Peter Broderick--HEY YOU, stand way back if you insist on talking while Peter's performing--to the local legend Scott McCaughey's Minus 5. Yes, you should get their latest platter: Killingsworth (how PDX is that!). See you at Rotture!
