THE ORCHID HIGHWAY

....

THE ORCHID HIGHWAY

....

RAINBOW QUARTZ (2008)

....It's tough for current pop bands to channel the Beatles without coming off as goofily retro or slavishly derivative, but Canadian quintet The Orchid Highway do a pretty damned spiffy job of it on their self-titled effort. Matter of fact, The Orchid Highway often sounds not unlike what the Beatles may have sounded like had they recorded Revolver in 2008. From the languid, slightly trippy "Let's Stay in Instead" and the jangly - yet insistently rockin' - Rickenbacker fest "Next World" to the Stonesy "Pop Tart Girl" (dig the "Brown Sugar"-inspired guitar riff that kicks things off) and the instant power pop classic "Time For a Change," the quality is always top notch, with spot-on lead vocals by brothers Jamie and Rory Macdonald and expert musicianship that balances slickness and rawness quite nicely. Pick this one up and if the aforementioned tunes don't become your fave raves, you may cotton to the dreamy "Sofa Surfer Girl" or the fantastic, hyper-poppin' "Medicine Tree" instead. Excellent stuff.

Hey one and all of our Canadian friends and fans!

After a fantastically successful launch in the US by our New York based record label, Ranbow Quartz, our debut self-titled CD is at last coming home to Canada.  As of June 10th, 2008, it's available all across the country and should start popping up on radio as well.  If you have any interest/desire to hear us on your local airwaves, please let them know!  We have people working this for us, but no one counts like the fans.

At the same time, the single and video for Next World will be made widely available, hopefully to land on the Much's etc.  In the meantime, if you haven't checked it out yet on youtube or elsewhere, follow this link for a look at the band in action, plain pure power pop performance with more vintage gear than any group has yet assembled for a video.

Thanks to everyone for the great support so far, we're already gearing up for our next recording adventure, so stay tuned!  Much more to come...

Thursday May 29th ? 2 weeks following the release of their album in the USA; The Orchid Highway are bringing their wall of amplifiers to The PLAZA CLUB on Granville. They'll be sharing the stage with legendary punk act TEENAGE HEAD. It's going to be a BIG NIGHT!

2008 has been a busy year for The Orchids; signing with hip NYC label Rainbow Quartz, filming the video for ?Next World?, and recording a follow up release. With an established live reputation, The Orchids are now in full throttle flirtation with the forces of fate: Transmission towers are broadcasting their songs from Hawaii to Rhode Island; from Jersey to Baltimore, from LA to Washington DC.

Speaking of Radio -99.3 THE FOX is sponsoring the show, so this is a great opportunity for fans to support the band; and send a loud message to local Radio: play this album on the air when it is released JUNE 10th in Canada!

Stage Time: The Orchid Highway fires up the amps at 10 PM!!! TEENAGE HEAD at 11:30. Tix are available at ZULU, SCRATCH, NEPTOON, and CLUBZONE.com~ Hope to

See You There!~

The Orchid Highway
Rainbow Quartz Records

Since life is complex and challenging but rewarding at the same time, rock 'n' roll can mirror that with combined tempos. The Orchid Highway is both slow and upbeat. The music grabs you in places, the lyrics do in others, the harmonies get you, the guitars do, or combinations. The album was recorded on analog and has a rich, deep sound that invokes a life spent indoors out of the rain. Great rock 'n' roll can also be about a really good listen. The Orchid Highway delivers on this without sounding dated, dull, too complex, or over the top. With a good '60's base that's simple and has its garage rock roots because of it, 12 string psychedelic guitars, British invasion harmonies, great hooks, some blues, and recording on analog tape only with an ear towards not only making a great sounding recording, but one that is very organic in it's cohesiveness, The Orchid Highway is a broader, more inclusive approach with different elements that make great rock 'n' roll, but leave a slight challenge to go beyond the standard formula. As far as the experience and elation of a live rock show goes, these guys are well known for their delivery, so the polished sound on their debut release only scratches the surface. Great rock 'n' roll is a discovery. The Orchid Highway is that discovery. These guys are not full of power chords that epitomizes garage rock, but if you love the elements, you'll know it once you hear the results. Like the motto of their label, Rainbow Quartz, it's pure pop perfection: A combination of '60s melodies and hooks with a little bit of complexity to make it interesting without missing the beat.

Here's the latest review to hit the web of THE ORCHID HIGHWAY self titled release.  Seems like the power pop community can't say enough about this album these days!

Also goes on to praise the FOURPLAY EP.  Thanks everyone - SPREAD THE WORD!

Monday October 1st, 2007...:

THE ORCHID HIGHWAY (self titled)

When I got the The Orchid Highway based on other online reviews, I expected a pretty good CD. What I found was a potential top 10 CD. Every song on the self-titled debut rings with a classic Badfinger vibe throughout the album. The opener "Sofa Surfer Girl" is a legit killer single that recalls Beatles and Fastball with it's hook-filled chorus and blistering guitars. "Medicine Tree" lives up to the rep the band has as the Vancouver version of Sloan, with bouncy ringing guitars, harmonies and fast-paced melody - in fact they sound better than a lot of newer Sloan material. "Let's Stay In Instead" has a dreamy Pink Floyd playing "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" quality. "Next World" and "Ballad On Plain E" has a neo-psych flavor and reminds me of The Go's latest CD. The retro love fest continues with a very Doors-like "Opiate." Another great single is "Pop Tart Girl" with it's shimmering guitars and very Rubinoos-like chorus. And the Jellyfish references won't be missed in the closer "Legion Hall." Overall a brilliant album that power pop fans will not want to miss. The last EP "Fourplay" is also another Beatlesque stroke of brilliance, so get that one too. Sometimes listening is believeing.
