We are so excited that the turnover of once abandoned buildings and storefronts down here in the Plaza is happening quickly! That means more excitement and traffic for our growing little district. Here in the next 4 months the streetscape will have changed dramatically with the opening of Velvet Monkey next door and the addition of residential/commercial units just like the ones that we and Collected Thread inhabit. Yes friends, you will have the opportunity to open up small business/studio/living quarters in the Plaza District that will make you the envy of friends and family. At the moment, one of the property owners is trying to find interested parties for a storefront. The idea is to get some artists together on this space to make it a sort of co-op or shared studio space. Here is the listing with contact information and all that stuff. Let's be neighbors! Dont let the retail giants scare you away this season. Remember when Christmas shopping involved small locally owned shops, where you knew all the owners and could always count on running into friends or your favorite people? Remember being greeted by intimate warm spaces sans flourescent lighting and screaming children? Remember the satisfaction you felt knowing that your money was going to fund YOUR community and not sweatshops or products from factories in third world countries who pollute and excrete their masses of useless consumptive retail waste? Also the extra pride you felt when purchasing a local artist piece knowing you were supporting the scene and allowing artists to shy away from apathy and think they just might make it in this great state?!
Yeah neither do we, let's work real hard to make it that way... We cant do it without you though. Please make a concerted effort to shop local this season and handmade as much as possible. What are we saying though, you dont need preaching you already know all this :)

Where are you located?
The Plaza District is frequently mistaken for the Midtown Plaza and Plaza Court in the downtown area. Though we are downtown, we are tucked away in a quaint commercial district inside the Gatewood/Carey Place/Crestwood area.
To find us go down Classen or Penn until you hit NW 16th St. We are in between the the two streets on the north side of the road where Blackwelder ends.
What do you carry?
Everything in the store is handmade/recycled/upcycled stuff. Some of it is made by local artists and some from different parts of the world. Basically anything we think is neat we will carry and if you have suggestions please let us know! On a side note, ANYTHING that can be recycled in our store is. We care very much about the environment as well as community and creativity.
Do you take Credit Cards?
All major credit cards are accepted.
What is "pop-surrealism, low brow or whatever you wanna call it..."?
Well, if you have ever picked up a Juxtapox magazine you will get the basic gist, but really, we dont discriminate. A more loose definition of what we would carry is any form of art that is non-traditional (ie realist landscapes, portraits, southwest art) But as stated before, the requirements are pretty loosely defined, since there are many people that work in these styles (Superrealism for instance) who can make it look amazing and original.
Are you taking submissions for art shows?
Yes! We are currently booked through Spring of 2010. Please dont let this discourage you. Think of it as an opportunity to think up a really awesome theme or take your time to make some large work. We have openings every second friday from 7-11pm with a catered bar and live music depending on the weather and size of the band. We take 30% in commission from all sales and will help you do some online promotion. Send us a message and we will set up a meeting to look at your work.
Are you looking for bands?
Currently we are subject to city sound ordinances so we arent really booking bands anymore :(
What's with the kitchen, do you live here?
Yes, actually. We have done our best to push all of our crap to the back but the kitchen is where it is. And please, this is not a home tour so dont bring your family and friends over JUST to check out the space and ask questions about our rent, utilities and whatnot. At least act like you are interested in what we carry. We dont know if you are legit or scoping the place out ;)
